A flashing orange light usually means your BT Hub is connecting to broadband, not that it has failed. First identify your Hub model and allow the model-specific connection time; if it does not turn blue, check the broadband cable and any filter your setup uses, then work through the steps below.
What a flashing orange light means
BT uses a flashing orange light to indicate that a Hub is connecting to broadband. A steady blue light means the Hub is connected. On some Hub generations, a steady orange light is a different state: the Hub is working but is not connected to the internet. Check the light description for your exact model rather than treating flashing and steady orange as interchangeable. BT’s light guide covers multiple Hub generations.
How long to wait, by Hub model

| Older BT Smart Hub or Ultrafast Smart Hub | BT describes flashing orange as a connection stage of about 30 seconds and advises giving the Hub a minute or two. Follow the row for your specific model in BT’s light guide; this timing is not a universal rule for every Hub. |
What to check if the light stays orange
1. Confirm the light and Hub model
Check the label or identifying details on the Hub, then compare its light with BT’s matching model guidance. Make sure the light is flashing, not steady. A flashing orange light describes a connection attempt; the meaning and expected timing can differ by Hub generation.
2. Check the broadband cable and any filter
Make sure the broadband cable is connected to the Hub’s Broadband socket and pushed fully in until it clicks. If your setup uses a microfilter, check that it is securely connected and seated correctly. BT’s Smart Hub 3 setup illustrates a filter in a primary phone-socket setup; it does not mean every BT customer needs one. Fibre and full-fibre installations can use different arrangements. 3. Check whether service is due to activate
If this is your activation day, BT says the service may go live as late as midnight. If it remains disconnected after that, check BT’s service-status information for a reported local problem and use its connection-help route if needed. 4. Restart the Hub
If the cable is seated and the Hub has had enough time to connect, follow BT’s restart sequence:

- Turn off the Hub.
- Wait five minutes.
- Turn the Hub back on and allow its lights to settle.

5. Test the main or test phone socket if you use extensions
If your broadband connects through a phone socket and internal extension wiring may be involved, testing at the main or test socket can help distinguish an extension-wiring issue from a wider connection problem. Use BT’s instructions for your socket and setup in its connection troubleshooting guide.

When to contact BT
Contact BT if the Hub remains disconnected after the appropriate wait, connection checks, restart, and any relevant socket test, or if BT reports a service problem. Have the Hub and a device you can use to test the connection nearby when you contact support. A persistent orange light alone does not identify whether the cause is activation, the line, equipment, or a local outage.

- Solid green: starting up.
- Solid blue: working and connected.
- Solid white: Hybrid Connect/mobile resilience state.
- No light: the Hub may be off, or its lights may have been disabled.
Use BT’s Smart Hub 3 status guide for the full model-specific meanings. Once the Hub is blue, if a particular phone, computer, or other device still cannot get online, troubleshoot that device’s Wi-Fi connection separately.
