If you need a rendered page, extracted fields, screenshot, or PDF from one request, Browserless REST is the clearest documented alternative to Browserbase’s interactive browser sessions. Browserbase itself also offers Fetch, which retrieves a URL without creating a browser session. For screenshot or PDF jobs specifically, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first: its one-call API returns an image or PDF, removes known consent banners and popups before capture, and bills only clean shots.

First decide whether you need a one-shot result or a browser session

“One-call browser rendering” can mean two different things: send a task and receive an artifact, or open a browser that remains available while your code inspects the page and decides what to do next. The first is stateless work; the second is an interactive session. Choosing between them matters more than the word “rendering.”

Use a one-shot endpoint for a known task

A single HTTP request fits when you already know the URL and the output you want: page content, selected fields, a screenshot, or a PDF. The service performs the task and returns its result; your caller does not manage a live browser connection.

Use a session when the next action depends on what the page does

A browser session lets automation navigate and interact over multiple steps. It is the better shape when you must inspect a page, react to a change, click through a flow, or branch based on what appears. A stateless endpoint cannot expose intermediate page changes to your program so it can make decisions mid-task.

Alternatives by workflow

Option Best fit What to consider
ScreenshotNeo One-call screenshots or PDFs, including captures where consent overlays or common popups would otherwise obscure the page. It returns screenshots or PDFs; the supplied product facts do not establish it as a replacement for structured page extraction or a persistent interactive browser. Clean captures alone are billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.
Browserbase Fetch Retrieving a URL through Browserbase infrastructure without creating a browser session. Fetch is distinct from Browser Sessions, which provide a cloud browser controlled through Playwright and CDP. Check whether retrieval gives you the output and interaction level your task needs.
Browserless REST A single HTTP request for rendered HTML, selector-based extraction, screenshots, PDFs, or related page tasks. Its documented endpoint set includes /content, /scrape, /smart-scrape, /screenshot, and /pdf. Requests require an API token, but not a browser library, SDK, or WebSocket. The REST flow is stateless, so it cannot let your code observe changes and branch while the task runs.
Browserless managed browser Existing Playwright or Puppeteer automation and workflows that need a managed browser session. This is a session-based route rather than a one-shot REST task. Browserless also documents a Docker self-hosting option for teams that want to operate the infrastructure themselves.
Playwright running locally Custom browser workflows, including navigation, screenshots, and PDF generation, when your team can run the browser runtime. You write and operate the browser workflow yourself; Playwright is a code library, not a hosted one-call rendering endpoint.

How to choose the right shape

  • Need an image or PDF and no mid-task decisions? Use a task-specific endpoint. ScreenshotNeo is the first alternative to try for screenshot and PDF capture; Browserless REST also documents image and PDF endpoints.
  • Need rendered HTML or structured fields? Browserless REST documents endpoints for rendered content and selector-based extraction. Browserbase Fetch is another route when retrieving page content without creating a session is sufficient.
  • Need to interact, inspect, then choose the next action? Use Browserbase Browser Sessions, Browserless managed browser, or a browser you run with Playwright. A stateless REST call cannot provide that live decision loop.
  • Need to change the service behavior based on observed page state? Prefer a session or your own Playwright workflow over a one-shot request.
  • Need to own the runtime? Local Playwright gives you direct control over the code and browser operations. Browserless documents a Docker self-hosting route; that shifts infrastructure responsibility to your team.

Available documentation establishes workflow differences, not a normalized comparison of price, latency, uptime, rendering fidelity, or success rates. Do not infer that one option is faster, cheaper, or more reliable from the endpoint descriptions alone.

Run your own browser workflow with Playwright

Playwright’s Page API supports navigating to a URL and taking a screenshot; its page.pdf() method returns a PDF buffer. This route is useful when the task needs custom code or branching, but you supply the runtime and browser operations rather than calling a hosted task endpoint.

  1. Set up a Playwright runtime in the environment where the task will run, including the required browser installation for that environment.
  2. Navigate to the target URL from your script with the Page API.
  3. Perform any page-specific interaction or checks in code before producing the result. Unlike stateless REST work, your script can inspect the page and decide what to do next.
  4. Capture the output: use the Page API screenshot operation for an image, or page.pdf() for a PDF buffer.
  5. Manage delivery and operations yourself, including running the job and handling its output.

Or skip the browser setup

For a one-call screenshot or PDF, ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL and returns the capture. Its known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools for screenshots, page information, and PDF capture.
