For most new Python browser-automation projects, start with Playwright: install its package and browser binaries, then use its synchronous or asynchronous API. Choose Selenium when your project depends on WebDriver, browser-specific driver workflows, or Selenium integrations. Both can automate browsers; the better fit depends on the browsers, protocol capabilities, and test environment you need.

This guide covers setup, navigation, waits, headless runs, browser choice, CI, and common failures. If your goal is only to save a page screenshot—not interact with the page—skip to ScreenshotNeo for a one-request option.

Choose Playwright or Selenium

Playwright and Selenium WebDriver are the two central choices for Python browser automation. Both let Python direct a browser, but their APIs and setup models differ. Playwright provides sync and async APIs and installs version-matched browser binaries. Selenium provides Python bindings for WebDriver; modern Selenium commonly uses Selenium Manager to handle driver setup when a session starts.

Decision point Playwright Selenium
Browser coverage Installs Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit; its browser documentation also describes Chrome and Edge channels. Browser-specific WebDriver implementations cover major browsers, including Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, WebKitGTK, and WPEWebKit, as listed in Selenium’s Python API documentation.
Python API Both synchronous and asynchronous APIs. Python bindings create and control WebDriver browser sessions.
Browser setup Install the browser binaries for the Playwright version in use; optional system dependency installation is documented for supported environments. Selenium Manager commonly resolves driver setup when WebDriver is instantiated; explicitly managed drivers remain an option.
Protocol and events A high-level browser automation API. WebDriver is a W3C Recommendation. WebDriver BiDi adds bidirectional event streaming, including network requests, console messages, and JavaScript errors.
Tests and CI Playwright recommends its official Pytest plugin and supports local and CI execution. WebDriver is broadly browser-oriented; maintain browser and driver compatibility in the CI environment you use.

The table reflects the capabilities described in the official Playwright and Selenium documentation; it is not a speed benchmark. Pick Playwright when its installed Chromium, Firefox, or WebKit workflow and sync/async API suit the project. Pick Selenium when WebDriver or its browser-specific implementations are required. For either, pin your dependencies and monitor browser compatibility rather than assuming a local setup will behave identically in CI.

Set up Playwright in Python

Install the package and browsers

  1. Install the Python package: pip install playwright.
  2. Install the browser binaries supported by that Playwright version: playwright install.
  3. If the operating system is missing required system libraries, consult Playwright’s browser documentation for the optional playwright install-deps command and supported dependency setup.

Playwright versions require specific browser versions. When you update the package, update the installed browser binaries as appropriate; do not assume a browser installed for one version is the right one for another.

Run a synchronous script

Save this as title_check.py and run it with Python:

from playwright.sync_api import sync_playwright

with sync_playwright() as p:
    browser = p.chromium.launch()
    page = browser.new_page()
    page.goto("https://example.com")
    print(page.title())
    browser.close()

The script launches Chromium, opens a page, navigates to the example URL, prints its title, and closes the browser. Use the URL you need to automate in place of the example. Closing the browser is important in a script so the process does not leave a browser running after the work is complete.

Use the asynchronous API when the rest of your program is async

Playwright also documents an asynchronous Python API. Use it when browser work belongs in an asyncio application rather than trying to mix synchronous browser calls into an event loop:

async def main():
    async with async_playwright() as p:
        browser = await p.chromium.launch()
        page = await browser.new_page()
        await page.goto("https://example.com")

        await browser.close()

asyncio.run(main())

For test suites, Playwright recommends its official Pytest plugin. That gives a test-oriented integration; the minimal script above remains useful for a standalone automation task.

Set up Selenium WebDriver

Install and launch Chrome

Install Selenium’s Python package in your project environment, then start a driver session:

pip install selenium
from selenium import webdriver

 driver = webdriver.Chrome()
 driver.get("https://selenium.dev")
 print(driver.title)
 driver.quit()

Remove the extra leading space before driver = if copying the snippet into a file; the complete runnable form is:

from selenium import webdriver

driver = webdriver.Chrome()
driver.get("https://selenium.dev")
print(driver.title)
driver.quit()

The Python API documentation lists Python 3.10 or newer. Modern Selenium uses Selenium Manager, so driver setup is commonly handled when webdriver.Chrome() creates a session. A driver can still be managed explicitly where your environment requires it. Always call quit() when finished; it ends the browser session.

WebDriver and WebDriver BiDi

WebDriver is a language-neutral API and protocol, with each browser backed by a specific driver. Selenium describes WebDriver as a W3C Recommendation and says it drives a browser natively. WebDriver BiDi extends this model with bidirectional communication and streaming browser events, such as network requests, console messages, and JavaScript errors. That event capability may matter when an automation needs to observe browser activity rather than only issue commands. The exact BiDi support you can use depends on the browser and Selenium versions in your environment.

Make automation reliable: navigation, waits, and failures

Do not treat navigation as proof that the page is ready

A browser automation usually has at least two phases: navigate to the page, then interact with or inspect the page. A destination may still be loading data or rendering content after navigation returns. For a robust script, wait for the page condition your next step actually needs—such as the presence of a target element—rather than relying on an arbitrary pause. Fixed delays can be too short on a slow run and waste time on a fast one.

Playwright and Selenium both support browser automation, but their waiting and locator behavior is a practical comparison point. In Playwright, use the locator-oriented APIs documented for the installed version and wait for the intended element or state before acting. In Selenium, use its documented element lookup and wait approach, and avoid assuming an element exists immediately after get(). Specific default timeout values are not established here, so set and verify timeouts against your own page and test requirements rather than relying on an assumed number.

Use stable targets

Automation is only as dependable as its target. Prefer a selector tied to a meaningful, stable element over one that depends on incidental layout or changing text. If a lookup fails, check that the page reached the expected state, that the element is in the page being controlled, and that the selector still matches the current site.

Keep browser sessions and environments controlled

  • Close sessions in cleanup paths, including after an exception, so a failed run does not accumulate browser processes.
  • Pin the Python library version in your project and keep browser binaries or drivers compatible with it.
  • In CI, install the browsers or drivers the chosen tool needs instead of assuming a developer’s local installation exists on the runner.
  • When a run fails only in CI, compare the browser, driver, operating system dependencies, and installed package versions before changing the automation logic.

Run headless and test across browsers

Headless mode runs a browser without a visible window, which is useful on a CI runner without a desktop. Both ecosystems support browser automation in local or CI contexts, but the exact launch configuration and availability depend on the browser and installed version. Check the current tool documentation for the headless option supported by the browser you launch rather than copying a flag from another browser or version.

For cross-browser checks, Playwright’s browser installation workflow explicitly covers Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit. Its documentation also describes using Chrome and Edge channels. Selenium’s Python API lists browser-specific implementations for Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, WebKitGTK, and WPEWebKit. Support in an API list does not mean every browser is installed or available on every operating system: confirm availability on the machine or CI runner you will use.

Do not treat a Chromium run as evidence that Firefox, WebKit, Safari, or Edge behaves identically. Run the same high-value test cases against each browser your users or application support, and keep browser compatibility under review when updating dependencies.

Troubleshoot common setup and runtime problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Playwright cannot launch a browser The required browser binary may not be installed for the Playwright version in the environment. Run playwright install in that environment, and verify the package and browser versions align.
Playwright launches locally but fails in CI The runner may lack browser system dependencies or installed browser binaries. Follow the documented CI and dependency setup for the runner; consult Playwright’s browser documentation about playwright install-deps.
Selenium cannot create a browser session Driver resolution, browser availability, or version compatibility may be the issue. Confirm the browser is installed and that Selenium Manager can resolve the corresponding driver, or configure a managed driver explicitly.
Element lookup fails after navigation The page may not yet be in the expected state, or the selector may no longer match. Wait for the relevant element or state, then verify the selector against the current page.
A script leaves browser processes behind The browser session is not closed after completion or failure. Ensure cleanup calls browser.close() in Playwright or driver.quit() in Selenium, including on error paths.
Only one browser fails a test Browser behavior or availability may differ, or the test may depend on an assumption specific to another engine. Reproduce in the affected browser, verify it is installed and compatible, and check selectors and page readiness assumptions.

These are diagnostic branches, not guarantees about a particular error message. Use the actual exception and the browser/tool versions from the failing environment to narrow the cause.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations

There is no benchmark in the cited technical documentation that establishes one framework as faster in general. Runtime depends on the page, browser, test actions, machine, and startup strategy. Measure the workflow you need, especially if each task starts a fresh browser. Reusing a browser within a controlled test process can avoid repeated startup work, but isolate state between tests where cookies or page state could contaminate results.

Reliability generally depends more on stable selectors, condition-based waits, deterministic test data, and compatible browser versions than on choosing a fashionable API. CI adds maintenance: install the required browser or driver, account for system dependencies, and update pinned versions deliberately. Neither tool removes the need to monitor changes in the site being automated.

There are no general per-run prices or benchmark figures established here for Playwright or Selenium. Their documented workflows are libraries and browser automation infrastructure you operate in your own environment; the practical costs are the compute and maintenance needed to run them.

Or skip the browser setup

If all you need is a screenshot or PDF rather than a browser session you can interact with, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request API and an MCP server. It is not a substitute for Playwright or Selenium when your task must click through a workflow, inspect dynamic state, or perform a sequence of browser actions. For a screenshot, a Python request can save the returned image:

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I automate a browser with Python without opening a visible window?

Yes. Headless browser runs are used in CI and other non-desktop environments; check the current launch configuration for the browser and library version you install.

Does Selenium require me to download a driver manually?

Not in every setup: modern Selenium commonly uses Selenium Manager when a WebDriver session is instantiated. Explicit driver management remains an option when your environment requires it.

Can a screenshot API replace browser automation?

Only for screenshot or PDF capture tasks. A screenshot API does not replace an interactive browser workflow that must execute actions and inspect page state.
