For an AI coding platform to use a browser, connect its model to a browser session through one of four patterns: a developer-operated runtime, a provider-hosted browser, a provider-defined toolset executed by your application, or a browser automation server such as Playwright MCP. The right choice depends first on who must operate and secure the browser, then on what the model needs to observe and which clients it must support.

What a browser automation API does

A browser automation integration is the bridge between an AI model and a live browser session. The model requests actions or calls tools; application code or a browser service performs them and returns observations, such as page text, accessibility information, screenshots, or runtime output. The model does not automatically gain access to a browser merely because it can write code.

Four patterns are worth distinguishing. They can overlap in the tasks they support, but differ in who runs the browser, how the model is given control, and what the developer must configure.

  1. Developer-managed runtime: Your application operates the browser and executes the model’s requested actions.
  2. Hosted browser environment: A provider operates the browser environment; your application starts sessions and handles the documented events and access requests.
  3. Provider-defined browser toolset: The provider defines the model-facing tools, but your application executes those calls against its own browser automation.
  4. MCP browser server: A browser automation server exposes tools through the Model Context Protocol (MCP), and an MCP-compatible AI client connects to it.

MCP is an integration protocol, not a browser engine. It standardizes how compatible applications connect to tools and other systems; Playwright supplies the browser operations in Playwright MCP. See the MCP introduction and Playwright MCP setup documentation.

Compare the four integration patterns

Pattern Who operates the browser What the model receives Connection and configuration Best fit
Developer-managed runtime Your application or infrastructure. Whatever observations your runtime returns, which may include structured tool results or visual observations. A provider-specific tool or code-execution integration calls application-managed browser automation. Teams needing control over the browser environment, execution limits, and permission rules, and willing to operate the runtime.
Hosted browser environment The API provider operates the browser environment. Observations and events available through the provider’s documented interface. Your application starts a session, follows events, and handles website access requests. Teams looking to avoid operating the browser infrastructure directly and willing to use the provider’s session model.
Provider-defined browser toolset Your application executes calls using its own browser automation. Results from the operations exposed in the provider’s tool schema. Declare the provider’s versioned browser toolset in the API request and implement its calls in your application. Teams that want a provider-defined model-facing tool interface but need to keep browser execution in their own environment.
Playwright MCP The environment running the MCP server and browser. By default, structured accessibility snapshots with roles and text; documented capabilities also include screenshots and coordinate-driven vision. An MCP-compatible AI client connects to the Playwright MCP server and its configured capabilities. Developers who want browser tools available through MCP in a supported coding client and value structured page observations.

Developer-managed browser runtime

OpenAI’s computer-use API guide describes a pattern in which the application supplies the runtime and executes the model’s requests. It presents two approaches: use code execution in a runtime with a library such as Playwright or PyAutoGUI, or use a computer tool that translates structured mouse and keyboard actions into browser or desktop input. The documented examples include JavaScript with Playwright and Python, Ruby, and Go clients connected to a PyAutoGUI runtime. See OpenAI’s computer-use API documentation.

What you own

Your application must provide the browser or desktop environment, carry out tool actions, return observations, and preserve the browser session across calls where the workflow needs continuity. The guide also places execution limits and permission rules in the application’s runtime responsibility. That control is useful, but it is operational work—not a policy that should be assumed to arrive automatically with the API.

When it makes sense

Choose this pattern when you need to determine the browser environment and its controls yourself, or when the application already operates browser automation. It is a less attractive fit if your team does not want to provision, maintain, and secure a runtime.

Provider-hosted browser environment

OpenAI’s Agents API computer-use documentation describes an OpenAI-hosted browser environment. The application starts the browser session, follows its events, and handles website access requests while the agent acts on what it observes. This is different from using an application-operated browser with a provider-defined tool schema: in the hosted pattern, the provider operates the browser environment. See OpenAI’s Agents API computer-use documentation.

Questions to resolve before building around it

  • How does your application start, observe, and end a session according to the current API documentation?
  • How should your application handle website access requests and other events?
  • Does the documented session behavior fit the authentication and continuity your workflow needs?
  • Do the provider’s current terms and supported features fit your deployment?

The cited documentation describes the integration pattern, but does not establish a general price, geographic availability, or guaranteed session persistence. Check the current provider documentation rather than assuming those details.

Provider-defined browser toolset executed by your application

Anthropic’s browser-use tool is a versioned browser_toolset_20260801 entry in the Messages API. The current documentation says it is available on the Claude API and Google Cloud. The tool schema is provider-defined, but the application executes its calls against its own browser automation, so this is not the same as a provider-operated hosted browser. See Anthropic’s browser-use tool documentation.

Default-disabled members and why they matter

Four operations are disabled by default: javascript_exec, file_upload, read_console, and read_network. Anthropic explains that these operations can widen what manipulated page content could trigger or what page-controlled content can reach the model. Enable a member only when the workflow requires it, and account for the trust boundary of the pages the agent may visit.

Account for tool and observation tokens

Anthropic’s documentation, checked on 2026-10-03, estimates about 6,600 input tokens for the default browser toolset definitions and system prompt. The exact usage is reported in the response’s usage field; optional members add overhead, and returned text and screenshots or other images also consume input. This is a vendor-documented estimate for that toolset, not a comparable total-cost figure across providers.

Playwright MCP for coding clients

Playwright MCP makes browser operations available through MCP. Playwright describes its server as enabling LLMs to interact with web pages using structured accessibility snapshots. Those snapshots provide roles, text, and element references; the documented capabilities also include screenshots and coordinate-driven vision. The setup documentation names clients including VS Code, Cursor, Windsurf, Claude Desktop, Cline, Goose, Kiro, Codex, and Copilot CLI, among others. Client support and setup are not identical: follow the instructions for the particular client rather than assuming every client exposes every operation. Choose how browser state is handled

Playwright MCP documents persistent, isolated, and extension modes. A persistent profile retains login state and cookies between sessions. That may help a workflow that intentionally reuses an authenticated profile, but it also makes the profile’s stored authentication state sensitive. Decide whether persistence is appropriate before reusing browser profiles; use an isolated approach when tasks should not inherit that state.

Expose only the capabilities the workflow needs

Playwright groups optional capabilities. Its documentation notes that exposing fewer tools reduces tool choices and token overhead. Start with the minimum capability groups needed for the task, then add more only for a defined requirement. In particular, Playwright labels browser_run_code_unsafe as arbitrary JavaScript execution in the server process and RCE-equivalent. Enable it only for trusted MCP clients.

How to choose an integration

  1. Decide who should operate the browser. Choose a developer-managed runtime for direct environment control, a hosted environment to avoid operating browser infrastructure yourself, an application-executed provider toolset when you want its schema but your own runtime, or MCP when the target client can connect to a browser server.
  2. Match the observation to the task. Accessibility snapshots and text can make page structure available to the model; visual work may need screenshots or coordinate-driven actions. A runtime can return observations appropriate to its implementation.
  3. Check the client’s actual support. For MCP, verify the specific coding client’s setup and capabilities. For an API tool, verify the current tool declaration, supported provider, and model requirements in its official documentation.
  4. Choose a session and authentication strategy deliberately. Determine whether the workflow needs isolated sessions, persistent state, or a provider’s documented hosted-session behavior. Treat saved cookies and login state as credentials.
  5. Minimize exposed powers. Enable only the operations needed. Set application-side execution limits and permission rules for a developer-managed runtime; review sensitive actions such as uploads, page JavaScript, network inspection, and server-side code execution.
  6. Budget for observations as well as tool definitions. Screenshots, page text, and tool schemas can all add input. Measure usage for the actual workflow rather than inferring total cost from one vendor’s tool-definition estimate.

Security and operational checklist

  • Assume page content may be manipulated; browser output is untrusted input to the agent.
  • Constrain which websites, actions, and resources an agent can access according to your application’s requirements.
  • Apply execution limits and permission rules in a developer-operated runtime.
  • Protect persistent profiles and stored authentication state; do not reuse them casually across users or tasks.
  • Expose optional browser tools sparingly, especially capabilities that execute code, upload files, or inspect network data.
  • Verify what a client and tool actually support before relying on a particular capability in production.

Performance, reliability, and cost: what can be compared

The official documentation considered here does not provide a matched cross-platform set of latency, browser-task success-rate, or total-cost measurements for OpenAI computer use, Anthropic browser use, and Playwright MCP. Do not treat unlike tool schemas, token estimates, or hosting descriptions as a benchmark. Evaluate the exact workflow and client you plan to deploy, including session setup, observations returned, and the amount of browser infrastructure your team must operate.

Where ScreenshotNeo fits

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers, not a general-purpose interactive browser agent. It is a useful alternative when the coding assistant’s browser task is to capture a page as an image or PDF rather than click through a site, fill forms, or run an open-ended browser session. Its MCP tools are take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf; the API also accepts one GET request with a URL to return a screenshot or PDF.

For a direct capture, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot. The ScreenshotNeo documentation covers the API parameters and MCP setup.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Equivalent Python request:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Equivalent Node.js request:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo removes known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; responses include X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. The product also supports custom capture options and bulk requests; see its documentation for the full parameter list. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Every feature is on every plan.
