The Brother MFC-J5340DW is a color inkjet all-in-one for offices that need A3/Ledger printing alongside copying, scanning, and faxing. Its key trade-off is that it prints larger pages than it can scan or copy: the US specifications cap the scanner glass at 8.5 × 11.7 inches and the automatic document feeder at 8.5 × 14 inches. Duplex printing and ink options also vary by market, so check the specifications for the local model before buying.
What the Brother MFC-J5340DW does
This four-cartridge color inkjet combines printing, copying, scanning, and faxing. It is aimed at small offices and home offices that need larger-format output without giving up everyday multifunction features. Brother lists USB 2.0, wired Ethernet, and wireless networking for the US model; its network functions include printing and scanning. The US version also has a 2.7-inch color touchscreen.
Brother’s UK listing describes A3 printing, a 250-sheet paper capacity, a 50-sheet automatic document feeder (ADF), wired and wireless connectivity, and compatibility with Brother Mobile Connect. These are market-specific listings, not a guarantee that every regional SKU has the same configuration.
Large-format printing, with smaller scan and copy limits
The MFC-J5340DW’s central advantage is A3/Ledger printing. That does not mean it can scan or copy A3 originals: Brother’s US specification lists a flatbed glass area of up to 8.5 × 11.7 inches. The ADF accepts documents up to 8.5 × 14 inches, making it useful for multi-page and legal-size documents, but not for feeding A3 originals.

For a large original, the practical distinction is whether you need to print a larger page or digitize and reproduce one. This model addresses the former; its listed scan surfaces and feeder are smaller. If large-format scanning or copying is essential, confirm those capabilities separately before choosing it.
Duplex printing and feeder scanning
Automatic two-sided printing depends on region and media size
Brother’s US specifications list automatic two-sided printing for Letter, Executive, A4, and A5 paper. Brother Australia advertises A3 automatic duplex printing. These claims should not be combined into a universal feature list: confirm the supported sizes for the exact model sold in your market, especially if A3 duplexing is important.

Automatic two-sided scanning through the ADF is not confirmed
The US specification gives the feeder’s document dimensions and optical scan resolution, but does not explicitly state that the ADF scans both sides automatically. Do not assume that automatic duplex printing means automatic duplex scanning; they are separate functions. If your workflow depends on feeding two-sided originals and scanning both sides in one pass, verify that capability with Brother for the specific regional SKU before buying.
Paper handling and day-to-day office features
Brother’s US specification lists a 250-sheet main tray and a one-sheet manual feed slot. The manual slot can accommodate occasional special media without replacing the paper in the tray, but the listed capacity is modest for sustained high-volume or frequent large-format jobs. Brother UK lists a 50-sheet ADF; check the local product listing for the feeder capacity and supported media.

The US specification lists print resolution up to 1200 × 4800 dpi. Optical scan resolution is listed up to 1200 × 2400 dpi from the glass and 600 × 600 dpi from the ADF. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent assessments of the resulting print or scan quality.
Speed and ink costs
Manufacturer-rated speed
Brother’s US brochure gives maximum simplex speeds of up to 28 pages per minute in black and color, with approximate first-page times of 4.4 seconds for black and 4.6 seconds for color. These are manufacturer ratings, not measured results from an independent test. Actual throughput can vary with the job and settings, and the quoted maximum is for simplex printing rather than two-sided output.

Cartridges and stated yields vary by market
For the US market, Brother’s brochure identifies LC402 supplies and gives an approximate yield of 3,000 pages for the LC402XLBK black cartridge. Brother Australia lists maximum high-yield cartridge figures of up to 3,000 pages in black and 1,500 pages in color. These are manufacturer-stated yields, not guaranteed output for every user or job. Cartridge identifiers and available options differ by region; match replacements to the cartridge code on your existing supply or the local Brother listing.
Ink is a continuing expense, but the available specifications do not establish this printer’s actual cost per page. Compare local cartridge prices and the yields quoted for your market if running cost is a deciding factor.

- Consider it if A3/Ledger printing, office multifunction tasks, and wired or wireless connectivity are central to your needs.
- Check carefully first if you need automatic A3 duplex printing, since the listed duplex sizes differ between regional sources.
- Look elsewhere or verify first if you need to scan large originals or automatically duplex-scan through the feeder; the cited US specifications do not establish those capabilities.
- Account for supplies and paper handling if you expect high print volumes: check local ink availability and pricing, tray capacity, manual feed, and ADF capacity.
The published specifications establish features and manufacturer ratings, but do not establish real-world reliability, comparative print quality, actual ink cost per page, or an advantage over any particular competing printer.
