Bromcom says a superseded single sign-on (SSO) registration feature remained in production because an internal system was still calling it. The company identified an incident involving that feature on 6 September 2026 and, in its FAQ updated 30 September, said it had found no evidence of MIS data access or successful account takeover. The incident’s affected population and the nature and scope of any data involved were still under investigation.
What happened at Bromcom?
Bromcom’s 30 September 2026 FAQ describes the affected component as legacy SSO registration functionality in its Communication Server environment. The company says the feature had been superseded but remained in production because an internal system continued to call it. Bromcom says it first identified the incident on 6 September 2026, after receiving reports of SSO access problems. Bromcom’s incident FAQ
The Register reported on 6 October 2026 that the service held email addresses associated with SSO registrations, the identity provider used (for example, Microsoft or Google), registration and last sign-in dates where recorded, and internal user and registration reference numbers. That describes information held by the service; Bromcom’s FAQ did not establish that all of it was accessed or copied. It said the nature and scope of any data potentially involved remained under investigation. The Register’s report Bromcom FAQ details
Was pupil or school MIS data accessed?
Bromcom reported in its 30 September FAQ that it had found no evidence of access to school MIS data and that the MIS database was not involved. It also said its investigation had not identified a successful unauthorised sign-in to the MIS, MyChildAtSchool, or a Bromcom user account, or a successful account takeover arising from the incident. These are Bromcom’s findings to that date, not a final independent determination; its investigation was ongoing. Bromcom’s incident FAQ

Were passwords or Microsoft and Google accounts exposed?
Bromcom says the affected component did not hold account passwords, access tokens, refresh tokens, or session tokens. The Register’s account of the service’s stored registration information includes the identity provider name, such as Microsoft or Google, but that does not by itself establish access to those providers’ accounts. Bromcom had not established the full nature or scope of data potentially involved in its 30 September update. Bromcom’s incident FAQ The Register’s report
What has Bromcom done?
Bromcom says it withdrew the legacy functionality from production, introduced additional school and account authorisation checks, limited self-service removal to the signed-in user’s own registration, and improved operation-specific logging and security audit records. It also says email-address records were recovered and recovery activity was undertaken for SSO registrations. The company says it restored SSO access quickly to limit disruption. What should a school do now?
Separate the reported login disruption from the unresolved question of possible data exposure. A school may need to assess its data-controller responsibilities even if its users did not report login problems; sector commentary from DPE makes that point, but it does not identify which schools were affected. DPE’s sector commentary
- Check for direct communication from Bromcom and ask whether the school or trust’s SSO registrations are within the scope Bromcom is validating.
- Record what the school knows about login disruption and any relevant communications. Do not infer that account credentials or MIS data were exposed solely from an SSO access problem.
- Make the school or trust’s own assessment of its data-controller obligations and appropriate next steps. Bromcom says it is contacting relevant data controllers; its FAQ also says Bromcom had not notified the ICO, explaining that it acts as a data processor for information held on the communications server. That is Bromcom’s stated position, not general legal advice.
The Register reported that Bromcom’s software is used by more than 5,000 schools and 390 multi-academy trusts. Those are figures for Bromcom’s reported customer footprint, not a count of schools affected by this incident. The Register’s report

What remains unknown?
In its 30 September FAQ, Bromcom had not established the identity of affected schools and individuals or the final nature and scope of data accessed or copied. The company said its investigation and school-level validation were continuing. Schools should therefore rely on Bromcom’s updates for incident-specific findings rather than treating the absence of reported MIS access or account takeover as proof that no information was involved.
