If your Ruckus R720 is not powering up, reporting a PoE warning, or showing a down LAN2 port when connected to a Brocade ICX 6450, first verify the exact switch variant, PoE support on the connected port, and available power budget. Then check the cable and the AP’s power mode before changing firmware or replacing hardware.
What details determine the right fix?
“ICX 6450” is not enough to establish whether a particular switch can power an R720. The model suffix, port count, PoE variant, port configuration, and remaining power budget all matter. RUCKUS troubleshooting guidance recommends checking PoE support on the switch and the specific port, as well as the available budget when multiple access points are connected (RUCKUS PoE troubleshooting guidance).
Before troubleshooting, record these details:
- The complete ICX 6450 model designation, including its suffix.
- The FastIron version running on the switch.
- The R720 firmware version, or its Unleashed version if applicable.
- The precise symptom: no power, no Ethernet link, a PoE warning, LAN2 down, or another behavior.
- Which switch port the R720 uses, and whether that port is intended to provide PoE.
- Whether other PoE devices or access points are using the switch’s power budget.
Check the cable, port, and available PoE
- Confirm the physical link. Inspect both Ethernet connectors and the cable, then check whether the switch reports a link on the connected port. If practical, test with a known-good cable and a different port that is confirmed to support PoE.
- Verify PoE on that exact port. Check the switch documentation and configuration for the complete ICX model. Do not assume every port on every ICX 6450 variant supplies PoE.
- Inspect power allocation. Check whether PoE is enabled and whether the switch has enough unallocated power for the AP. A supported PoE port can still fail to power a device if the switch’s available budget is insufficient.
- Capture the switch’s current state. Record the port’s link and PoE status, power allocation, and any related warnings. Include the exact FastIron version when asking for help; avoid applying commands intended for a different model or release.
RUCKUS guidance also calls out cable condition, PoE-standard compatibility, and power budget as checks. A CommScope/ RUCKUS Networks hospitality design guide lists 30 W as an R720 PoE planning value; that figure is a design reference, not a measurement of this AP’s draw or a guarantee that a particular ICX 6450 port can supply it (R720 PoE budget table).
If the R720’s LAN2 port is down
LAN2 being down is a more specific symptom than the AP failing to power on. In guidance for an R720 LAN2-port-down case, the RUCKUS team says the AP needs an injector or 802.3at power for LAN2 to be active, and recommends checking the AP’s power mode (R720 support guidance). Use that advice for the LAN2 symptom; it does not establish that LAN2 is the problem in every ICX 6450–R720 setup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck the R720’s power mode and confirm how it is powered. If you are considering an injector or separate supply, verify its compatibility with the exact AP and required power standard before connecting it. The available evidence does not establish that every ICX 6450 variant supports 802.3bt, so do not assume that it does.
Should you change the power mode or upgrade firmware?
Do not treat a power-mode change or firmware upgrade as a universal fix. Community reports describe power-negotiation warnings and 802.3af behavior involving R720 units and ICX6450 or other switches, but those reports are anecdotal and tied to particular configurations, hardware, or firmware versions. They do not prove a general incompatibility or a definitive remedy (community power-issue reports).
Rank #2
Before changing software, identify the exact switch and AP versions and preserve the current configuration. For any proposed FastIron upgrade, consult the official release notes and upgrade guide for the specific hardware and boot image; historical forum recommendations alone are not enough to choose a current release (ICX 6450 firmware references).

For a useful diagnosis, provide the complete ICX model suffix, FastIron version, R720 firmware or Unleashed version, exact symptom, connected port, and whether the AP is powered from that port or from another source. Include the port’s link and PoE status, available power budget, and any warning text or relevant command output. Without those details, the title does not support identifying a single cause or confirmed solution.
