Broadcom announced on March 11, 2024, that it had created an Enterprise Security Group combining its Symantec and Carbon Black businesses. The announcement was an organizational change, not a declaration that all products had been replaced or merged. SecurityWeek reported that the portfolios would continue in their existing states for the immediate future; Broadcom’s March 2026 Symantec CBX announcement later showed one example of technologies from both portfolios being combined.

What Broadcom announced

On March 11, 2024, SecurityWeek reported that Broadcom had created an Enterprise Security Group to manage its cybersecurity portfolio and bring together the Symantec and Carbon Black businesses. The announcement followed Broadcom’s acquisition of VMware, through which Carbon Black came to Broadcom. SecurityWeek’s report described the change as a new business unit, rather than a product-by-product merger.

The two businesses had different strengths Broadcom said it wanted to combine. Symantec brought data and network protection, while Carbon Black contributed endpoint detection and response (EDR) and application control technologies. Rob Greer, the Enterprise Security Group’s vice president and general manager, said: “Bringing both network and data telemetry to Carbon Black will enable greater visibility and control for our joint customers.”

Why Broadcom brought the businesses together

The stated rationale was to connect security signals and capabilities across layers. Network and data telemetry could add context to Carbon Black’s endpoint detection and response, while the combined organization could serve customers operating across on-premises and hybrid-cloud environments. Greer described the initial investment posture this way: “Initially, we will invest in R&D to improve – and extend the life — of the products our customers are using both on-prem and across hybrid clouds.” These were reported intentions at the time, not a guarantee about later funding, support, or product lifecycles. Both statements and Greer’s role were reported by SecurityWeek.

Did Symantec and Carbon Black products merge?

Not all at once, according to the March 2024 report. SecurityWeek said the portfolios would continue in their existing states for the immediate future. That means the announcement itself did not establish that customers had to replace products, migrate deployments, or adopt a unified platform.

There is a later, specific example of technological convergence. On March 23, 2026, Broadcom announced Symantec CBX, a cloud-based offering that combines Symantec and Carbon Black capabilities. Broadcom described Symantec features including prevention, Adaptive Protection, Data Security, Cloud SWG, and Incident Prediction alongside Carbon Black EDR. CBX demonstrates that some capabilities were brought together; it does not establish that every product across either portfolio was unified or replaced. Broadcom’s CBX announcement provides the product-specific details.

How the two businesses came under Broadcom

Symantec Enterprise Security and Carbon Black followed different paths into Broadcom:

  • Symantec Enterprise Security: Broadcom said it completed the acquisition on November 4, 2019. The business was to operate as the Symantec Enterprise division. Broadcom stated a cash purchase price of $10.7 billion in its acquisition announcement. Broadcom’s completion release confirms the closing date.
  • Carbon Black: Carbon Black came to Broadcom through VMware, which Broadcom had acquired before the March 2024 Enterprise Security Group announcement. SecurityWeek described the VMware deal as worth $69 billion; that figure is the transaction value cited in that report, not a cybersecurity market statistic. SecurityWeek’s account covers the organizational announcement and context.

What changed for customers—and what the announcements do not establish

A concrete customer-facing change was the Carbon Black Community’s move to Broadcom Communities. A Broadcom Community notice published May 3, 2024, scheduled the transition for May 6 and said the community would be visible within the Symantec Division. This documents a support-community destination change, but does not establish any customer’s product migration, contract terms, pricing, support entitlement, or renewal policy. Broadcom’s community notice gives the transition details.

The cited announcements do not provide product-by-product compatibility or migration instructions, nor do they resolve an individual customer’s licensing or support situation. For those questions, customers need current documentation for the specific product and guidance tied to their contract or deployment.
