Contemporaneous reports did not disclose the total paid, individual awards or final number of recipients. The deal was separate from the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) £20 million regulatory penalty, imposed in 2020.
What happened in the 2018 British Airways data breach?
The ICO’s penalty notice says malicious code on BA’s website operated from 21 August to 5 September 2018. It copied payment-card information customers entered on the site, while the usual booking process continued. A third party alerted BA on 5 September, and BA contained the vulnerability that day. The ICO says BA notified it and 496,636 customers on 6 September, then another 39,480 customers on 7 September. ICO penalty notice
The ICO estimated that information belonging to approximately 429,612 individuals may have been accessed. That estimate is not the same as the number of people notified, and the categories describe potential access rather than proving that every listed record was taken.
| ICO potential-access category | Information described |
|---|---|
| 244,000 customers | Names, addresses, card numbers and CVVs |
| 77,000 customers | Card numbers and CVVs |
| 108,000 customers | Card numbers only |
| Other accounts | BA employee and administrator credentials; usernames and PINs for up to 612 Executive Club accounts |
In an announcement on 25 October 2018, BA said there was no conclusive evidence data had been removed from its systems and that it had no verified fraud cases at that point. Those were BA’s statements at the time; they do not establish that fraud never occurred. British Airways, 25 October 2018

How much did British Airways pay in the data breach settlement?
The settlement amount was confidential in the contemporaneous reports. They did not establish a total payment, an amount per claimant or a final recipient count, so none can be stated reliably. The settlement was reported as compensation for qualifying people in the litigation, not as an open compensation fund.
Can I still claim compensation?
The available reports establish that BA settled the group action in 2021, but they do not establish a current claims process, open deadline or present eligibility rules. They therefore cannot confirm that someone who did not participate in the litigation can now submit a claim. Anyone trying to determine whether they were included should consult their own legal or case correspondence rather than rely on an assumed ongoing claims route.

What was the ICO’s £20 million penalty?
In October 2020, the ICO imposed a £20 million penalty for BA’s failures to protect personal and financial information. Its investigation found that BA did not detect the attack itself when it began on 22 June 2018; a third party alerted the airline on 5 September, more than two months later. The ICO said measures such as restricting access, rigorous simulated-attack testing and multi-factor authentication for employee and third-party accounts could have mitigated or prevented the risk. ICO announcement, 19 October 2020
The penalty was regulatory enforcement, not compensation paid into a claimant fund. The ICO said monetary penalties go to the Treasury’s Consolidated Fund. In short, the £20 million figure was publicly stated for the 2020 penalty; the separate 2021 private settlement’s value was not disclosed.
