Boston Dynamics engineer Arun Kumar says he programmed Spot to perform as many as seven backflips in a row. He tentatively calls the sequence a “septuple backflip”—but stresses that Spot was not designed for the stunt and customers do not need it. The demonstration is better understood as a test of the robot’s movement limits than as a new industrial feature.
What does “septuple backflip” mean?
In a Boston Dynamics-posted interview, software engineer Arun Kumar lists a backflip, a triple backflip, a quintuple backflip and then “seven back flips,” before wondering aloud whether the last one is a septuple backflip. In other words, the label refers to seven consecutive backflips, as Kumar describes them. The source is the company’s account of a conversation with him; it does not establish when the original performance video was published or independently document the full sequence.
Kumar is clear about the stunt’s status: “Spot wasn’t designed to do a back flip.” He says customers do not need the maneuver. The point was to explore what the robot’s hardware could do, not to present acrobatics as a normal task for deployed Spot robots.
How did the engineers teach Spot to flip?
Train a controller in simulation
Kumar describes using reinforcement learning, in which an agent learns in a simulated environment by receiving rewards for actions. For the flip, the controller’s goal was to track a reference animation: “We have an animation of Spot doing a backflip, and we want Spot to follow that animation as closely as possible so it does a backflip.”

- Playful Puppy Companion: Meet the Ruko 18011 robot dog—a playful companion that walks, spins, wags its tail, dances, and even lifts its leg to “pee.” Just a gentle touch on its head, and it responds with cheerful sounds and silly moves, bringing endless giggles without the mess of a real pet.
- LED Faces That Delight: With 70 glowing LED lights, this puppy shows more than 30 animated facial expressions. From wide happy eyes to goofy faces, kids can instantly see its moods, making storytelling, pretend play, and silly roleplay games more magical.
- Learn Through Programming: Instead of just watching, kids become the “trainer.” With the programming mode, they can design up to 50 custom moves—like a dance routine or a parade of tricks. It’s a fun, hands-on way to spark creativity, problem-solving, and early STEM skills.
- Control Near or Far: Whether kids are racing it across the living room or guiding it in the backyard, they’re always in charge. The 2.4GHz remote works from up to 98 feet away, while simple hand gestures let them direct their pup up close—so play never gets boring.
- Safe Fun in Anywhere: This clever pup knows when something’s in the way. Thanks to obstacle-avoidance sensors, it smoothly avoids walls and furniture. Perfect for small apartments, bedrooms, or any indoor play space where kids can enjoy worry-free fun.
That approach still has to account for the difference between a simulation and a physical robot. Kumar says the team had to model Spot’s dynamics and deal with complications in the hardware, especially because the maneuver pushes the machine toward its physical limits.
Test on the physical robot and learn from failures
The process did not end with a successful simulation. Kumar describes transferring the behavior to hardware, logging failures, diagnosing what went wrong and repeating tests to improve robustness. That iterative work matters: a simulated maneuver is not, by itself, proof that a robot can reliably perform it in the real world.

What could the work have to do with Spot’s everyday use?
Kumar connects the work to a more practical movement problem: a robot in the field may slip or trip, and recovering reliably can require using the available motor power effectively. That is his stated engineering rationale, not evidence that a backflip has been validated as a recovery feature or makes Spot safer in deployments.
He distinguishes this exploration from his ordinary work on Spot behaviors. He describes tasks such as inspecting factories, capturing images at the right time and returning to a charging dock. The flip is a high-dynamic demonstration; inspection is the kind of operational work Boston Dynamics presents Spot for.

Why a choreographed robot performance is not spontaneous
Backflips are not the only attention-grabbing Spot demonstrations, but a polished performance should not be confused with improvisation. Boston Dynamics says its show routines use custom drag-and-drop Choreographer software, combining existing dance moves with new motion defined by animators as position data. Preparing a routine can take weeks or months, and the team must account for friction, hardware tolerances and gravity.
The company has also recounted a rare hardware failure during a live performance. Senior software engineer Rosa Kurtz called it “such a rare hardware failure” and said the team had run the robot more than 100 times beforehand. That account illustrates why a successful rehearsal or video is not a guarantee that every performance—or field task—will go exactly as planned. See Boston Dynamics’ account, “Spot Takes the Stage”.
