Boston Dynamics has named Rohit Prasad, a former Amazon senior executive who led Alexa and the Amazon Nova foundation-model family, as its CEO. Announced October 6, 2026, the appointment takes effect October 7, as the company begins pursuing industrial deployments of its Atlas humanoid robot. The timing puts AI leadership at the center of Boston Dynamics’ effort to turn Atlas from a product platform into a manufacturing tool—but announced plans are not the same as completed factory rollouts.
Who is Boston Dynamics’ new CEO?
Rohit Prasad is Boston Dynamics’ incoming CEO, effective October 7, 2026. In its appointment announcement, the company describes him as a former Amazon Senior Vice President and Head Scientist for Alexa and Artificial General Intelligence. It says he spent 12 years at Amazon, helped build Alexa from its early days, and most recently led the Amazon Nova foundation-model family.

Prasad’s appointment is a leadership change aimed at bringing artificial intelligence and robotics closer together. He said the combination could expand robotics across industries and help shape what he called “the next era of Physical AI.” That is the incoming CEO’s stated ambition, not a description of a capability Atlas has already demonstrated.
Why appoint an AI leader during the Atlas rollout?
Boston Dynamics is positioning Atlas as an industrial humanoid robot, while presenting AI as a way to make robots more adaptable and useful across real work environments. The company’s stated goal is to combine its robotics with AI systems and scale what it calls “Physical AI.”

Jaehoon Chang, Hyundai Motor Group vice chair and Boston Dynamics board chair, said the appointment brings together Boston Dynamics’ robotics, Prasad’s experience turning AI into products, and Hyundai Motor Group’s manufacturing, logistics, and mobility capabilities. That is Chang’s rationale for the decision; it should not be read as independent proof that the combined effort will achieve a particular scale or performance.
What the Atlas rollout actually involves
Atlas is Boston Dynamics’ electric humanoid robot. The company unveiled its product version at CES on January 5, 2026, describing it at the time as an electric humanoid platform “currently in development.” Its announcement marked a move toward a product, not evidence that the robot was already available for widespread factory use.
Boston Dynamics later described Atlas as an “enterprise-ready industrial humanoid robot,” said learned behaviors could be redeployed across fleets, and reported that it was manufacturing the product version. The company’s Atlas timeline also said deployments at Hyundai and Google DeepMind were scheduled in 2026. These are company descriptions and plans; they do not establish broad commercial availability or completed, scaled deployments.
Hyundai is the starting manufacturing partner
Boston Dynamics says Hyundai will be the starting partner for customer testing and iteration, with plans to work with a small group of innovative customers over the next few years. Hyundai Motor Group’s CES strategy sets a target to deploy Atlas at Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America by 2028 for sequencing tasks. That is an announced target, not a confirmed deployment.

Hyundai describes Atlas as designed for industrial applications and integration into existing facilities. Its strategy also includes a group-wide value network for AI robotics training, commercialization, and expansion. The practical question is whether evaluation and integration can establish useful tasks in specific facilities; a stated target date alone does not answer that.
Google DeepMind is the named AI collaborator
Boston Dynamics and Google DeepMind announced a strategic partnership at CES on January 5, 2026. The announcement says the companies plan to integrate Google DeepMind’s Gemini Robotics foundation models with Atlas and research a variety of industrial tasks, initially in automotive manufacturing. It describes planned research, not a specified performance gain already achieved by Atlas.

The current picture is a product rollout path built around customer discussions, evaluation, training, and integration—not a consumer launch or a claim that Atlas is already working at scale across factories. Boston Dynamics’ Atlas product page routes qualified prospects through application planning and evaluation rather than a retail purchase flow.
- Established: Boston Dynamics announced an electric Atlas product version in January 2026 and identifies it as intended for enterprise and industrial settings.
- Announced plans: Hyundai is the starting manufacturing partner; Hyundai Motor Group has stated a 2028 target for Atlas sequencing work at Metaplant America; Boston Dynamics and Google DeepMind plan AI research and integration.
- Not established by those plans: broad availability, completed deployment at scale, or a quantified improvement in industrial performance.
For businesses assessing the news, the meaningful milestones will be demonstrated tasks, customer evaluations, integration into actual facilities, and evidence of repeatable use across deployments. Prasad’s appointment signals that Boston Dynamics sees AI as central to that path, but it does not by itself resolve those execution questions.
