Choose the Bose SoundLink Max if you need its listed 3.5 mm input or prefer Bose’s documented connectivity. Choose the JBL Xtreme 4 if Auracast support, an included shoulder strap, or its longer headline battery-life estimate matters more. Both are rated IP67, and the listed weights are close; neither the specifications here nor the battery claims establish a tested sound-quality winner.

Which speaker lasts longer between charges?
JBL publishes the higher maximum: up to 24 hours for the Xtreme 4, compared with Bose’s up-to-20-hour figure for the SoundLink Max. These are manufacturer estimates, and the cited information does not establish that the brands used the same test conditions. JBL says playback time depends on volume and audio content. Bose’s charging guidance says, “At maximum volume, the battery lasts up to 3 hours”; Bose also notes that conditions affect performance.
So, the Xtreme 4 has the longer advertised maximum, but that four-hour difference should not be read as a guaranteed advantage in everyday use. High volume and the content being played can change runtime. Sources: Bose battery charging guidance and the JBL specification sheet.

Which is easier to carry?
The Xtreme 4 is 0.27 lb lighter by the listed weights: 4.63 lb versus 4.9 lb for the SoundLink Max. But it is also larger in each of the listed dimensions. Bose describes the SoundLink Max as 10.42 in wide, 4.73 in high, and 4.13 in deep; JBL lists the Xtreme 4 at 11.69 × 5.87 × 5.55 in. A lighter speaker is not automatically easier to handle, so consider both the shape and whether it fits your bag or storage spot.
For carrying by strap, JBL lists a shoulder strap in the Xtreme 4 package. Bose lists a rope handle as included and its shoulder strap as a separate accessory. Check current package contents in your region before ordering. Sources: Bose product page and JBL product page.

Are both speakers waterproof?
Both manufacturers list an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance. That shared rating is a useful point of comparison, but it is not a recommendation to play either speaker underwater or operate it while wet. Follow the product’s care and handling guidance rather than treating the rating as permission for every wet-use scenario. See the Bose product information and JBL product information.
What ports and speaker-linking features do they offer?
Choose Bose for a listed 3.5 mm input
Bose lists a 3.5 mm input as well as Bluetooth 5.4 and USB-C input/output. The analog input can matter if you want to connect a compatible wired audio source. Bose also lists stereo and Party Mode pairing for two SoundLink Max speakers.

Can the listed power ratings tell you which sounds better?
JBL lists Xtreme 4 electrical output ratings of 2 × 30 W RMS woofers plus 2 × 20 W RMS tweeters in AC mode, and 2 × 20 W RMS woofers plus 2 × 15 W RMS tweeters in battery mode. Those figures describe JBL’s rated output under the stated power modes; they are not a direct comparison with Bose and do not establish which speaker sounds better. The available information does not include an independent comparative listening test, so a sound-quality winner cannot be supported from these specifications alone. See JBL’s product specifications.
Which one should you choose?
- Pick the Bose SoundLink Max if the listed 3.5 mm input is important, or if its Bose-specific stereo and Party Mode pairing fits your setup.
- Pick the JBL Xtreme 4 if you value its listed Auracast support, included shoulder strap, power-bank feature, or higher maximum battery-life claim.
- For carrying and placement, compare the listed dimensions with your bag or storage space; JBL is slightly lighter, while Bose is smaller in the listed width, height, and depth.
- For outdoor use, both manufacturers publish an IP67 rating; neither rating should be treated as an instruction to operate the speaker wet or underwater.
Neither product wins every category. The better fit depends on which documented connection, carrying, and power features matter in your setup.
