The Bose SoundLink Max is rated for up to 20 hours of playback at moderate volume, but Bose’s test results fall to up to 3 hours at maximum volume. It charges over USB-C, carries an IP67 rating for accidental dust and water exposure, and supports Bluetooth multipoint for two connected source devices. Here are the practical limits and details behind each claim.
How long does the Bose SoundLink Max battery last?
Bose specifies up to 20 hours at moderate volume and up to 3 hours at maximum volume. These are Bose test results, not guaranteed runtimes. In its owner’s guide, Bose says the 20-hour test used Bluetooth A2DP audio at 65% volume, a temperature of 68–77°F (20–25°C), default EQ, and a mix of Top 50 Global tracks from October 2023. The 3-hour test used Bluetooth A2DP at 100% volume in the same temperature range. Neither test charged an external device.
Actual battery life varies with volume, audio content, and temperature. Charging a phone from the speaker also uses its battery and affects playback performance. See Bose’s owner’s guide and product specifications for the stated figures and conditions.
How do you charge the SoundLink Max?
Connect the speaker’s USB-C port to the supplied USB-C cable or a similar cable and power supply providing at least 5V/3A. Bose says a 3A/15W supply can fully charge the speaker in up to 5 hours; charging time may vary with the supply used. The power light slowly blinks white during charging and glows solid white when the battery is full.

Bose’s box contents list a USB-C cable and, in the US, a USB-C power supply; the power supply is not included in every region. Bose also says the battery automatically stops charging when full, so leaving the speaker plugged in overnight will not overcharge it. See Bose’s charging instructions for further details.
Is the SoundLink Max waterproof and dustproof?
Bose rates the SoundLink Max IP67. Bose describes this as protection against dust and accidental immersion in water to approximately 3 feet (1 meter) for up to 30 minutes. The key limitation is that the speaker is not designed to play audio while wet. Treat the rating as protection against accidental exposure, not permission to use it underwater or operate it wet. These are Bose’s product claims; no independent durability test is cited here. See the Bose product page for its water-exposure caveat.

Bluetooth and multipoint
Bose lists Bluetooth 5.4 and a wireless range of up to 30 feet (9 meters). Multipoint lets the speaker maintain connections to two paired source devices and switch to the active source. The speaker can store up to six devices in its pairing memory. To clear that list, Bose instructs owners to hold the Bluetooth button for 15 seconds.

Wired audio and phone charging
The speaker also has a 3.5 mm input for a wired audio source. Its USB-C port can charge a connected phone using power from the SoundLink Max’s built-in battery, which reduces the energy available for speaker playback.

Pairing two SoundLink Max speakers
Bose says two SoundLink Max units can be paired in either Stereo Mode, which assigns left and right channels, or Party Mode, which shares playback. This guidance applies specifically to two SoundLink Max speakers; it does not establish compatibility with other Bose models.
