Boeing confirmed on November 2, 2023, that a cyber incident affected elements of its parts and distribution business. The company said the incident did not affect flight safety. LockBit claimed it had stolen data, but Boeing’s statement did not confirm the group’s identity, the full extent of any access, or the alleged theft.
What Boeing confirmed
Boeing spokesperson Jim Proulx told TechCrunch on November 2, 2023: “We are aware of a cyber incident impacting elements of our parts and distribution business.” The company said it was investigating, coordinating with law enforcement and regulatory authorities, and notifying customers and suppliers. Boeing did not publicly provide a technical account of how the incident happened or describe its full operational scope in that statement.
A later Boeing annual filing identifies the affected subsidiary as Boeing Distribution, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary. That retrospective identification clarifies which business was involved; it does not add a detailed public forensic account of the incident.
Did the incident affect flight safety?
Boeing said it did not. Proulx told TechCrunch: “This issue does not affect flight safety.” That is Boeing’s stated assessment, not an independently published technical audit. Boeing’s public statement concerned elements of its parts and distribution business and did not report a flight-safety impact.

What LockBit claimed—and what remains unverified
Before Boeing’s public confirmation, ransomware group LockBit listed Boeing on its leak site and alleged it had stolen sensitive data. SecurityWeek reported that LockBit later removed Boeing from the site and described claims made to VX-Underground. Those are reports of the group’s statements and behavior, not independent forensic confirmation of the intrusion or the alleged data theft.
Boeing’s confirmation of a cyber incident should not be read as confirmation of every LockBit allegation. The available reporting and Boeing filing do not establish the entry method, a verified quantity or complete scope of stolen data, or whether Boeing paid a ransom. The Record reported contemporaneously that Boeing declined to answer whether it would pay; that is not evidence that a payment was made.

What Boeing said about its response
In the November 2, 2023 statement, Boeing said: “We are actively investigating the incident and coordinating with law enforcement and regulatory authorities. We are notifying our customers and suppliers.” The statement describes the response Boeing reported at the time; it does not disclose investigation findings or a final account of notifications.

In a later annual filing, Boeing said that prior cyber incidents, including the 2023 Boeing Distribution incident, had not materially affected its strategy, results of operations, or financial condition. “Not materially affected” is a company-level financial and strategic assessment. It does not mean there was no local disruption, no data exposure, or no effect on customers or suppliers.

Boeing’s 2022 annual report discusses cybersecurity risks generally, including unauthorized access, ransomware, exposure of sensitive information, and business disruption. Those disclosures provide context for why a cyber incident at a parts and distribution operation can matter, but they do not show that each of those consequences occurred in this case.
