A BMC is a controller or service; Redfish is a standard for communicating with management services. A server’s BMC may offer a Redfish interface, but the terms are not interchangeable—and Redfish support and coverage depend on the server model and firmware.

What is a BMC?

A baseboard management controller (BMC) is an embedded device or service that handles server monitoring and management separately from the main operating system. DMTF describes a BMC as typically an independent microprocessor or system-on-chip running firmware for out-of-band management tasks. In practice, it provides a management endpoint for operations such as accessing system status or controlling aspects of the server without relying on its host operating system. DMTF’s Redfish overview explains the standard’s relationship to management services and devices.

What is Redfish?

Redfish is a DMTF standard that specifies how clients access server-management information and operations. It uses RESTful interface semantics and a schema-based data model, with data commonly represented in JSON. DMTF’s specification puts it this way: “Redfish is a standard that uses RESTful interface semantics to access a schema based data model to conduct management operations.” Redfish Specification DSP0266.

In plain terms, Redfish defines a structured way for software to request management data and perform supported operations. It does not itself provide the embedded controller or service that runs on a server.

BMC vs. Redfish: the practical differences

Comparison BMC Redfish
What it names An embedded device or service for management functions. A management standard and interface.
Its role Performs or hosts out-of-band management functions. Defines RESTful access to a schema-based management model.
How it is implemented Hardware and firmware choices vary by server and vendor. The specification defines required and optional elements and permits OEM-specific extensions.

The relationship is straightforward: a BMC can expose a Redfish service, which client software can use to interact with supported management features. But not every BMC necessarily supports Redfish, and two Redfish implementations may not expose identical capabilities. The standard’s optional elements and OEM extensions mean that support for Redfish alone does not guarantee that every operation or data item is available on every server. See the Redfish specification and Redfish Data Model Specification.

What to check before using Redfish

  1. Confirm support for the exact server. Check the documentation for the specific server model and firmware; do not infer support from the presence of a BMC alone.
  2. Verify the features you need. Look for the relevant Redfish resources and operations in the vendor’s documentation. A server may implement some parts of the standard without supporting every optional feature or operation.
  3. Account for vendor extensions. If your management software relies on OEM-specific behavior, confirm that it matches the server and firmware in use.

Which term should you use?

  • Use BMC when referring to the embedded controller or service responsible for out-of-band management.
  • Use Redfish when referring to the standard interface and data model used to access management information and operations.
  • Use Redfish-enabled BMC when you mean a BMC that implements the Redfish interface.

Current Redfish specification versions

As listed by DMTF, Redfish Specification DSP0266 version 1.23.1 and Redfish Data Model Specification DSP0268 version 2025.4 are both dated 16 January 2026. These version details can change; consult the official Redfish release listing for the current documents.
