Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and ANT are both low-power wireless technologies that use the 2.4 GHz band, but they serve different ecosystems. BLE is usually the easier choice when a device must connect directly to phones, tablets, or computers. ANT—and especially ANT+—is a strong fit for sports and fitness sensors built to share ANT+ data profiles. Neither has a universal battery-life or range advantage: implementation and operating conditions matter.

What are BLE and ANT?

BLE is the low-energy radio technology in the Bluetooth family, managed by the Bluetooth SIG. It is widely supported in consumer devices such as phones, tablets, and laptops. Bluetooth profiles and product support determine whether two devices can exchange the particular kind of data an application needs.

ANT is a low-power wireless protocol family associated with Garmin’s ANT Wireless ecosystem. Garmin describes ANT as a protocol for sending information between devices. ANT+ builds on ANT with shared definitions, called profiles, for what transmitted information represents. Those profiles help compatible sports, fitness, wellness, and health products from different manufacturers interpret sensor data.

How do BLE and ANT differ?

Comparison Bluetooth Low Energy ANT / ANT+
Radio band 2.4 GHz ISM band, under the Bluetooth Core Specification. 2.4 GHz ISM band.
Typical ecosystem strength Broad support in phones, tablets, laptops, and other consumer devices. Sports and fitness sensor networks, particularly products using shared ANT+ profiles.
Interoperability basis Bluetooth roles, features, profiles, and product support must match the intended use. ANT+ devices need a shared profile and appropriate network conventions; ANT support alone does not guarantee ANT+ interoperability.
Network behavior Connections, advertising, and other arrangements depend on the BLE roles and features implemented by the products. Garmin lists peer-to-peer, star, and practical mesh topologies.
Published technical figures Bluetooth 5 includes 2 Mbps operation, 500 kbps and 125 kbps long-range modes, eightfold growth in advertising capability, and up to four times the range without increased peak transmit power. Nordic lists 0.5 Hz to 200 Hz × 8-byte messages, 125 channels, adaptive frequency agility, AES-128 encryption, and a network size of 65,535.

These are technology-level published figures, not guarantees for a particular product or application. Actual throughput, range, battery use, and network behavior depend on implementation and conditions.

  • Compatible with Popular Cycling Apps: Works with Zwift, Rouvy, Peloton, Ride with GPS, Cyclemeter, OpenRider and CooSporide for indoor training and outdoor cycling.
  • Works with GPS Bike Computers: Compatible with COOSPO BC107, BC200, CS300, CS500 and CS600, as well as other bike computers that support Bluetooth or ANT+ sensors.

Which should you choose?

Choose BLE for broad general-purpose compatibility

If direct connection to a phone, tablet, or computer is the priority, BLE is generally the more practical starting point because it is commonly built into those devices. Confirm that the operating system and the particular application support the Bluetooth profile and product roles you need; having a BLE radio does not by itself ensure application compatibility.

Choose ANT+ for a compatible sports-sensor workflow

If your use centers on a sports or fitness ecosystem whose devices already communicate through ANT+ profiles, ANT+ can make sensor data interoperable across compatible products. Check the exact sensor profile and confirm that the receiving device supports it. An ANT-capable product without the required ANT+ profile may not provide the interoperability you expect.

Check the receiver before buying

For a phone or computer, verify whether it can receive the sensor’s protocol directly or needs an ANT+ USB receiver or another compatible receiver. For an ANT+ heart-rate or cycling sensor, check the receiver’s support for the relevant profile rather than relying on the ANT+ label alone. Availability and compatibility vary by product and platform.

Does BLE or ANT use less battery?

Both are designed for low-power operation, so the protocol name alone does not identify the longer-lasting device. Battery consumption depends on factors including advertising or connection interval, payload size, transmit power, receive duty cycle, radio silicon, and firmware. Garmin says ANT can run for years on a coin cell in suitable designs, but that is not a universal lifetime guarantee for every ANT device.

Magene Outdoor/Indoor Speed/Cadence Sensor for Cycling, Wireless Bluetooth/Ant+ Bike Computer RPM Sensor for Road Bike or Spinning Bike and Trainers Compatible with Onelap, Wahoo Fitness, Zwift
  • [Battery] Remove the insulating sheet of the pre-installed battery before usage; re-install the battery to switch between the speed and cadence mode.
  • [Mode] 1 sensor can ONLY select one mode (Speed or Cadence) at the one time.So you need 2 sensors to test both speed and cadence.(1 for speed,1 for cadence)
  • [Device] When using the Bluetooth protocol 1 sensor can ONLY connect to 1 APP or device concurrently; When using ANT+ protocol it can be connected to multiple devices at the same time.
  • [Connection] When using a smart phone APP, you need to search for the sensor in the APP, searching through the phone system’s Bluetooth setting is invalid.
  • [Hibernation] S3+ sensor will automatically enter the sleep state for 1 minute to save power after the sensor is stationary, the sensor will ONLY start sending broadcasts after it is properly woken-up.

To compare products fairly, use battery-life figures measured under the same use pattern, update rate, environment, and battery conditions. Without measurements for the exact devices and settings, there is no reliable universal BLE-versus-ANT battery winner.

What do the speed, range, and network figures mean?

Bluetooth 5’s 2 Mbps mode and its 500 kbps and 125 kbps long-range modes are different operating options, not a promise that every Bluetooth 5 product supports or uses all of them. Nordic’s overview also describes eightfold advertising-capability growth and up to four times the range without increased peak transmit power. Those are published technology capabilities, not guaranteed application results in every environment.

Nordic’s ANT figures—0.5 Hz to 200 Hz × 8-byte messages, 125 channels, and a network size of 65,535—describe protocol capabilities. They should not be read as a guarantee that a given device can sustain every listed rate, payload, or network size while meeting its range, power, and reliability requirements.

For either technology, assess the actual update rate and payload, required topology, interference and coexistence conditions, security needs, supported silicon and software, and product-specific limits. A design that works in a small one-to-one setup may not meet the needs of a larger network.

What to verify for a product or prototype

  • Compatibility: Identify the phone, computer, app, receiver, or other device that must read the data, then confirm support for the specific application profile.
  • Topology: Decide whether the system needs a direct connection, broadcast, star, or mesh arrangement, and verify that the product supports it.
  • Sensor data: For ANT+, confirm the exact profile on both ends; for BLE, confirm the required Bluetooth profile and supported roles.
  • Power and performance: Set the needed update rate, payload, range, and battery target, then evaluate them in the intended environment.
  • Development and deployment: A Nordic nRF52840 Bluetooth 5 development board is one documented option for a BLE-first embedded prototype. For commercial ANT or ANT+ deployment, check Garmin’s developer resources and licensing terms for the relevant profiles, network keys, and software.
