The company said it would begin developing an optional subscription tier with possible extras such as higher-quality video uploads and profile customization. Those were plans, not a confirmed launch package: the announcement said Bluesky would remain free to use and subscribers would not get preferential ranking.
How much did Bluesky raise, and who led the round?
Bluesky announced $15 million in Series A financing on October 24, 2024. Blockchain Capital led the round. Bluesky named Alumni Ventures, True Ventures, SevenX, Amir Shevat of Darkmode, Kubernetes co-creator Joe Beda, and others as participants. The company said it would use the funding to support community growth, Trust and Safety, and the AT Protocol developer ecosystem. Bluesky’s October 24, 2024 announcement also said the service had more than 13 million users at that time; that was a contemporaneous figure, not a current count.

What subscription features did Bluesky describe?
Bluesky said it would begin developing a subscription model and offered higher-quality video uploads and profile customization—such as colors and avatar frames—as examples of what a paid tier might include. In a November 2024 interview, COO Rose Wang also discussed custom aesthetics, additional video uploads, and higher-resolution images as possible benefits, while saying core speech would not be put behind a paywall. These were descriptions of possible plans, not confirmation that those features were released.
The October announcement stated that “Bluesky will always be free to use” and that the company would not “u/rank accounts simply because they’re subscribing to a paid tier.” In other words, its stated plan was to keep the service accessible without requiring a subscription and not to boost posts or accounts just for paying. These were company principles announced in 2024, not independently verified descriptions of current product behavior.

Did Bluesky+ launch with the features and prices in its mockup?
A December 2024 interface mockup reported by TechCrunch showed possible Bluesky+ features including custom app icons, profile badges, inline translations, post analytics, and bookmark folders. It displayed sample prices of $8 per month or $72 per year. TechCrunch described the mockup as non-final, and Bluesky engineer Dan Abramov cautioned that the feature list was not necessarily what would be released. The mockup therefore does not establish final features, pricing, or a subscription launch.
The sources cited here do not establish whether a Bluesky consumer subscription is live as of October 8, 2026, or what its current terms are. The mockup’s sample prices should not be treated as current prices.

What other ways of making money did Bluesky discuss?
Alongside subscriptions, Bluesky said it wanted to establish voluntary payments for creators and projects. It also suggested that independent apps built on the AT Protocol might use subscriptions, domain-name registrations, and creator payments. These were ideas about potential ecosystem monetization, not finalized terms. The announcement named Namecheap as a partner to sell domains, but did not establish an affiliate relationship.

Later figures provide dated context rather than a current live total. Bluesky’s January 2026 transparency report said the network grew from 25.94 million to 41.41 million users during 2025. Its scope includes accounts hosted on Bluesky’s infrastructure and accounts across thousands of independently operated Personal Data Servers in the federated AT Protocol network. Bluesky’s official FAQ says it had over 44 million users as of May 2026. Neither figure changes the fact that the funding and subscription announcement described above was made in 2024.
