Choose Bluesky if you want to join without first choosing a server, browse selectable feeds, and use a social network built on AT Protocol. Choose Mastodon if you want to join a community run by a server operator, use a chronological home feed, connect through ActivityPub, and set visibility separately for individual posts. Neither is an overall winner: they use different protocols, and accounts and follows do not work across them by default.

The key question is what kind of control matters most to you. Bluesky makes the initial setup and feed choice more straightforward; Mastodon makes server choice and per-post audience settings more visible. Both are federated networks, but federation does not make their accounts interchangeable.

At a glance

Name Best for Key spec Platforms Checked
Bluesky Joining quickly and choosing among custom feeds AT Protocol; no server choice is central to ordinary sign-up Web, iPhone, Android Nov 2026
Mastodon A server-based community, chronological home feed, and post-level visibility controls ActivityPub federation; server policies vary Official iOS and Android apps; third-party clients also exist Nov 2026

What is the main difference between Bluesky and Mastodon?

Both networks are federated, but they use different protocols and organize participation differently. Bluesky uses AT Protocol, which separates account hosting from feeds and other services; Mastodon servers communicate with one another and compatible software using ActivityPub.

For someone creating an account, the distinction shows up early. Bluesky does not make choosing a server the centerpiece of ordinary sign-up. Mastodon asks you to select an independently operated server, sometimes called an instance. That server is more than a sign-up page: its operator sets local rules and policies, and those choices can affect your experience.

Bluesky’s architecture separates the server hosting an account from the feeds a person may use. Its company operates the Bluesky app, while the protocol is designed to support independent hosting and services. That is a different form of decentralization from Mastodon’s network of independently run servers. Neither description means there is no organization, service operator, or moderation involved.

They are not automatically connected to each other. A Bluesky account does not become a Mastodon account, and following someone on one does not follow them on the other. Third-party bridges may be built, but their existence does not establish that follows, posts, replies, likes, or moderation controls will carry over correctly.

Which network is better for the way you want to use social media?

Bluesky is a better fit if you want a lower-friction start and like selecting different feeds. Mastodon is a better fit if you want to choose a community’s server rules, prefer a chronological home feed, or need controls for the intended audience of individual posts.

If you care most about… Consider Why
Getting started without comparing servers Bluesky Server choice is not central to ordinary sign-up.
Selecting different ways to browse Bluesky Users can add and select custom feeds.
A chronological home feed of followed accounts Mastodon That is the standard home-feed approach.
Choosing a server with its own community and policies Mastodon Servers are independently operated and set local rules.
Connecting with compatible ActivityPub services Mastodon Mastodon communicates with compatible software on ActivityPub.
Choosing an audience for a post Mastodon It documents multiple post visibility settings; these are not encrypted messaging.

This is a preference-based comparison, not a ranking of community quality, moderation success, or overall popularity. What feels like an advantage depends on whether you want more choice at sign-up and in feeds, or more emphasis on server communities and post visibility.

Do you have to choose a server to join Mastodon?

Yes. A Mastodon account belongs to a server, so you choose one when signing up. You do not need to run a server yourself, and you can still discover accounts beyond it, but the operator and rules of your chosen server matter.

Mastodon’s own server guide puts it plainly: “Mastodon is not a single website.” That matters because a server is both the place where your account is hosted and a community with its own policies. Before joining, look at the server’s rules, moderation approach, and stated expectations. If a server closes or no longer feels right, migration may be possible, but it has limits (covered below).

Choosing a server does not mean you are limited to accounts hosted there. Mastodon’s documentation covers discovering accounts and hashtags, and servers communicate with compatible ActivityPub services. Discovery is not the same as universal search, however. Mastodon documents limits on full-text search, so it should not be assumed to work like searching a complete archive of every post.

For ordinary users, Mastodon signup does not require buying hardware. Self-hosting is a separate decision: Mastodon’s documentation lists a domain, virtual private server (VPS), and email provider among the requirements and also discusses managed hosting. Those needs are for someone operating a server, not someone simply creating an account.

Is Bluesky really decentralized?

Bluesky is built on AT Protocol, which is designed to separate account hosting from feeds and other services. That gives it a different decentralization model from Mastodon, but it does not mean the Bluesky app is run without a company or that every part of the network is independently operated.

Bluesky’s company operates its app, while AT Protocol describes a system that can support independent personal data servers (PDSs) and other services. Bluesky says a user’s hosting server does not itself determine the feed they see. In practical terms, users can participate through the Bluesky app without having to choose a PDS as part of standard sign-up, while technical operators can explore hosting one.

Mastodon puts server selection and independent operation closer to the ordinary user experience. Both designs distribute some functions, but they distribute them differently. If by “decentralized” you mean “not controlled by one company in any way,” neither network’s architecture should be reduced to a slogan: consider who operates the app or server you use, which services you depend on, and what moving away would involve.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an individual, the useful distinction is not just where data is hosted. It is also who sets the rules and moderation policies you encounter, which feed or app you use, and whether the wider network you care about speaks the same protocol. Mastodon’s ActivityPub connections and Bluesky’s AT Protocol ecosystem are not interchangeable.

How do feeds and discovery work on each network?

Bluesky lets users select custom feeds in addition to following accounts. Mastodon’s standard home feed presents posts from followed accounts chronologically, with separate discovery paths such as hashtags and account discovery.

On Bluesky, selectable feeds can change what appears in the browsing experience. This suits people who want to explore different collections or ways of organizing posts rather than relying only on one following timeline. The presence of custom feeds does not mean every feed is official or that every user sees the same content.

Mastodon’s home feed is follow-led and chronological. That can make it easier to understand why a post appears there: it comes from an account you follow, rather than from a feed you selected for a separate purpose. To find more people, Mastodon documents hashtag and account discovery. But full-text search has limits, so finding a specific old post or searching everything across the network may not work as expected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Neither network’s approach is universally better. Consider whether you want to choose among feeds as part of browsing, or whether you want a straightforward chronological timeline and are comfortable using other discovery tools when you want to find new people.

How do moderation and server rules differ?

Mastodon gives independently operated servers a substantial role in setting local rules, alongside controls available to individual users. Bluesky describes a mix of hosting decisions, platform moderation, and optional labeling or filtering layers. Neither design guarantees an experience free of harassment or unwanted content.

On Mastodon, review the rules of a server before joining because server policies and moderation decisions can differ. Individual controls also matter; a server’s approach is only one part of how a person manages what they see and how they interact.

Bluesky’s model includes moderation by the platform and its hosting services, as well as optional labeling and filtering layers that users can choose. That can offer ways to shape what is filtered or labeled, but it does not ensure every account, post, or interaction will be moderated the same way.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For either network, a practical comparison is to ask which rules apply, which controls you can use yourself, and how a platform or server handles reports and content decisions. Do not treat federation as a guarantee that every community follows the same standards. Nor should a network’s design alone be treated as proof that it will be safer or better moderated for every person.

Are Bluesky posts private, and can Mastodon posts be restricted?

Bluesky’s published privacy guidance says posts, likes, and blocks are public and that private profiles are unavailable. That guidance was updated in 2024, so treat it as a description of the published policy rather than assuming every current interface detail is unchanged. Mastodon documents several per-post visibility choices, but they are not a substitute for end-to-end encrypted messaging.

Mastodon’s documented choices include public posts, quiet-public posts, posts for followers, and private mentions. These settings let the author limit intended distribution in ways Bluesky’s published privacy guidance does not describe. But the distinction is about audience and delivery, not a promise that content is confidential: Mastodon explicitly warns that server administrators may be able to obtain the text of private mentions.

A post that was public should not be assumed to become private retroactively simply because you change settings later. Think about the visibility setting before publishing, especially for information you would not want distributed beyond the intended audience. Neither service should be treated as a private messenger on the basis of the controls described here.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bluesky’s privacy help article is older than the date of this comparison. If a specific privacy feature is the deciding factor, check the current app controls and the latest official privacy guidance before posting sensitive material.

Can you move your Mastodon followers and posts?

You can move a Mastodon account to a new one in supported circumstances, and followers may transfer when the receiving software supports Mastodon’s Move activity. Posts and media do not import into the new account through that follower move, and follows and other lists require separate attention.

Mastodon’s documented process is consequential rather than a one-click undo. In broad terms, the steps are:

  1. Create the new account. Choose and join the destination server before starting the move.
  2. Export follows and lists from the old account. This lets you separately handle information that is not carried over as part of the follower move.
  3. Establish an account alias. Set up the relationship between the old and new accounts as required by Mastodon’s migration process.
  4. Initiate the move from the old account. Followers may be directed to the new account where the receiving software supports the move.
  5. Rebuild what does not move. Posts and media remain behind, and follows or lists may need separate import or handling.

Read Mastodon’s account-moving documentation before starting. The old account is affected by the move, and Mastodon documents a cooldown before another migration. Do not proceed assuming you can instantly reverse it or that your complete posting history will appear on the destination account.

Can you move a Bluesky account to another server?

AT Protocol documents account and repository migration between personal data servers, but it involves technical steps. Do not assume that changing servers is effortless or that the process will look like Mastodon’s follower migration.

The protocol guide describes transferring repository records and blobs between PDSs, along with steps involving the account’s identity. It points to existing tools, including a command-line option and a community tool; their presence is not a guarantee that migration will be simple for every user or situation. People who are not comfortable following technical instructions may need help from someone who is.

Before attempting a migration, consult the current AT Protocol account migration guide and understand its prerequisites and sequence. Account portability is a meaningful part of the protocol’s design, but a documented migration path is not the same as a seamless, risk-free move.

Can Bluesky and Mastodon users follow each other?

Not by default: Bluesky uses AT Protocol and Mastodon uses ActivityPub, so ordinary accounts and follows are not shared across the two networks. A third-party bridge may provide a connection, but do not assume it carries every post type, interaction, or moderation decision faithfully.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mastodon can communicate with compatible ActivityPub applications, and Bluesky’s ecosystem is based on AT Protocol services. That is useful when choosing a network based on where your communities already participate: compatibility is protocol-specific. The existence of a bridge between different systems does not establish that replies, likes, follows, blocks, or privacy settings will behave as they do on the original service.

If following a particular person is important, check which network they use and whether they maintain an account on both. A profile’s presence on one service is not evidence that the same identity or posts are automatically available on the other.

How large is Bluesky compared with Mastodon?

Bluesky Social PBC’s official FAQ reported over 44 million users as of May 2026. The figure is not identified as monthly active users, and no comparable Mastodon count was established for the same period and definition, so it cannot support a reliable head-to-head size ratio.

When comparing networks, a user count is only meaningful if the time period and measurement are comparable. Do not read “users” as a verified count of people active every month, or infer that a larger headline number means a better fit for your community. The official Bluesky FAQ is the source for its stated figure.

Can you use either network without self-hosting?

Yes. Ordinary sign-up does not require you to buy a server or set up hosting on either network. Self-hosting is an optional technical path, not a prerequisite for joining.

For Mastodon, operating a server involves a domain, VPS, and email provider, among other operational decisions; its documentation also discusses managed hosting. Bluesky’s official PDS project documents VPS deployment and recommended requirements. A personal data server is not the same as running the full set of services behind a complete social app: the broader AT Protocol documentation notes that a full AppView is more resource-intensive than a PDS.

Hosting requirements and service suitability vary, and there is no single cost that applies to every setup. Unless you specifically want to operate infrastructure, use an existing account and let a server or service operator handle hosting. Choosing to self-host means taking on operational responsibilities, not just installing an app.

Which apps are available?

Bluesky points users to official web, iPhone, and Android clients. Mastodon lists official iOS and Android clients as well as third-party clients; the available features can differ by app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

App availability alone does not guarantee feature parity. If you plan to use a particular client, check whether it supports the features you need—such as your preferred feed, visibility controls, or account-management options—before making it your primary way to access the network. Mastodon’s official app directory lists clients; Bluesky’s PDS documentation links to official clients and project information.

How should you make the final choice?

Pick the network that matches your preferred balance of setup, feeds, governance, and audience controls—not a supposed universal winner.

  • Choose Bluesky if you want a simpler initial signup, selectable custom feeds, and an account experience that does not make server choice central.
  • Choose Mastodon if you want to select an independently run server, prefer a chronological home feed, value ActivityPub connections, or need documented per-post visibility options.
  • Pause before choosing either as your only home if portability is critical. Both have migration paths, but neither should be described as universally seamless: Mastodon does not move posts and media in its follower migration, while AT Protocol migration has technical steps.
  • Check your privacy needs carefully if you plan to share sensitive content. A post audience setting is not encryption, and Bluesky’s cited privacy guidance is from 2024.

It is also reasonable to maintain accounts on both if the people or communities you care about are split across them. Just treat them as separate networks: you will not automatically share follows, posts, or account identity between the two.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Mastodon free to join?

The research here does not establish a price for every server, and server operators can have different arrangements. Ordinary participation does not require you to self-host; check the chosen server’s own signup information for any local requirements.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens if my Mastodon server shuts down?

Mastodon’s account-moving process may help redirect followers to another account, but it does not bring your posts and media into the new account. Exporting information and understanding the destination server’s rules before a disruption can make a move less difficult.

Can I use the same username on Bluesky and Mastodon?

A username on one network does not reserve or automatically create the matching identity on the other. If you use both, verify each profile independently so people can distinguish the accounts.

Does a larger Bluesky user count mean it is more active than Mastodon?

Not by itself. A user total is not necessarily a count of monthly active people, and there is no same-period, same-definition Mastodon figure in this comparison to make a fair activity comparison.
