Choose a blind box if you enjoy the reveal and would be happy with several figures in the series. Choose a confirmed figure if you want one particular character, need to fill a specific gap, or want to avoid buying duplicates. The key distinction is the listing: “trading figure” can describe the collectible itself, while a trading figure may still be sold in a blind box. This comparison uses blind box for a random sealed purchase and confirmed figure for a listing that identifies the figure you will receive.
How the two buying formats differ
A blind box keeps the figure’s identity hidden until you open it. As Kidrobot puts it, “A Blind Box is a type of packaging that keeps its contents hidden.” Some series include common designs and rarer chase or secret figures, but odds and assortment rules vary. Check the official product information for the specific series rather than assuming a standard probability or lineup. Kidrobot’s blind-box explainer describes its own format and odds presentation.
A confirmed or open figure listing identifies the character before you buy. It may be a figure removed from its original sealed packaging, or another listing format that states exactly which design is included. Read the listing carefully: “open” does not by itself tell you the figure’s condition, what accessories are included, or whether packaging is present.
“Trading figure” is not a reliable synonym for “confirmed figure.” It can name a category of small collectibles, and figures in that category may be sold either randomly or as identified singles. For example, the marketplace distinctions in StockX’s guide to blind-box collectibles include sealed boxes, cases, and opened listings.

Choose based on what you want from collecting
Pick a blind box if the reveal is part of the appeal
- You like several figures in the series, rather than needing one exact character.
- You are comfortable keeping, gifting, or trading a duplicate or an unwanted design.
- You value the opening experience enough to accept uncertainty about what you receive.
Pick a confirmed figure if certainty matters more
- You have a favorite character or want a particular design as a gift.
- You are completing a collection and want to target a specific gap.
- You would rather pay the listed price for the exact figure than risk spending more on repeated random purchases.
Neither format is a universal value winner. The right comparison is the enjoyment and certainty you get against the total amount you are prepared to spend. A higher secondary-market price for a rare figure does not establish that it will rise in value or provide a reliable return.
What a sealed case does—and does not—guarantee
A case contains multiple boxes, but its contents and guarantees depend on the particular series and product description. Some assortments may be arranged to reduce duplicates; that does not establish that every case contains every standard design. A secret figure should not be treated as guaranteed unless the exact product terms say so. StockX’s guide explains case and opened-listing formats, but its marketplace guidance is not a universal rule for every retailer.

Before buying a case, check the listed box count, the stated assortment, and whether the seller explicitly guarantees a complete standard set. If the description does not say that a full set is guaranteed, do not assume it is.

- Identify the format. Confirm whether the item is a sealed random box, an opened and identified figure, or a full case.
- Match the series and character. Check the series name, edition or release details, and the exact character shown or named.
- Check what is included. Look for accessories, cards, inserts, and packaging in the description and photos.
- Assess condition and seller terms. Read the condition details, seller information, and return or dispute rules. Requirements differ by marketplace; for example, StockX describes specific new-and-unused and completeness requirements for its opened listings.
- Compare the total price with your plan. For a blind box, think through the cost of multiple attempts if you want a particular character. For a confirmed figure, compare the ask for that exact design with what you are willing to pay.
For series-specific odds, case contents, and lineup details, rely on the current packaging or official listing for that series. There is no single odds figure or case composition that applies to all blind-box collectibles.
