What changed in BleachBit 6.0.0?
The headline feature is a cookie manager for Chromium- and Firefox-based browsers. It lets you choose which cookies to keep when cleaning, rather than treating all cookies as an all-or-nothing category. The release also reorganized browser options under a clearer “Site data” category and revised descriptions for session-related options.

- Deeper Chromium cleaning: It expanded cleaning options for cache, site data, diagnostics, and network-related categories.
- Expanded Firefox cleaning: Firefox-family cleanup gained additional options.

What safety controls does 6.0.0 add?
BleachBit 6.0.0 added Expert Mode guardrails. When Expert Mode is disabled, options marked with a warning are blocked; the interface also marks choices that can carry risks, such as deleting browser passwords. The release notes describe additional safeguards involving custom paths and confirmation behavior.

These controls help make consequential choices more visible, but they do not make every cleaning option safe for every person. Before running a cleaner, review what it will remove—especially if you rely on saved passwords, sessions, or site data.
Is BleachBit 6.0.0 the latest version?
No. Version 6.0.0 launched on April 25, 2026, but the project’s download page lists 6.0.4 as its latest stable version as of October 4, 2026. The 6.0.4 release page is dated September 8, 2026.

Version 6.0.4 adds cleaners for Android Studio, Gradle Cache, fish, Zsh, and Python command-line history. BleachBit also highlights faster startup and scanning, a smaller Windows installer, and early macOS support that includes Safari cleaning and early GUI support. The project describes macOS and FreeBSD support as maturing, so treat them as works in progress rather than settled, broadly supported targets. The 6.0.4 release notes report 462 commits changing 248 files.
How do I download BleachBit safely?
Get the current release from bleachbit.org’s download page. BleachBit says the software is free to download and use without payment or registration. The page advises downloading from the official site and provides a final download page with links to GPG-signed SHA256 checksums. On Windows, it identifies Andrew Ziem as the verified publisher.

Windows: installer or portable ZIP
The Windows page lists BleachBit 6.0.4 for Windows 10 and Windows 11, with a standard installer and a portable ZIP. The project recommends the installer for most users; choose the portable archive if you want to run BleachBit without installing it. Version 6 requires Windows 10 or 11. The Windows page directs users of XP, Vista, 7, and 8 to version 4.7.0. Check the current options on BleachBit for Windows.
Linux: package, distribution repository, or source
BleachBit documents three Linux installation routes: download a package, use your distribution’s package manager, or install from source. A distribution repository may lag behind the project’s latest release, so check its version if you need the current release. For the GUI, the documentation says BleachBit 5 and 6 require GTK 3.24 and Python 3.8 or later; command-line use does not require GTK. The 6.0.1 AppImage bundles Python, relevant packages, and GTK. What else was included in 6.0.0?
Outside browser cleaning, the 6.0.0 release added command-line negation support, improved clipboard path handling for shredding, and made chaff generation faster with stop conditions. It also included interface improvements. For most people considering the update, the more visible changes are the browser controls and added safety cues.
