Bitcoin can move sharply, and no checklist or investment product can prevent losses. The most useful way to reduce the chance of a fear-driven decision is to decide in advance how much exposure you can afford, why you hold it, and what would justify changing your plan. The SEC and CFTC describe Bitcoin and Bitcoin futures as highly speculative; this is a risk-management guide, not a recommendation to buy, sell, or hold Bitcoin.
Why volatility calls for a plan
A falling price can feel like evidence that an investment thesis has failed, but price movement alone does not tell you whether the reason you invested has changed. Conversely, a written plan should not become an excuse to ignore new information or keep an exposure that no longer fits your finances.
SEC and CFTC staff have described Bitcoin, including exposure through Bitcoin futures, as highly speculative. Their guidance emphasizes considering volatility and your own risk tolerance. It does not establish a universally appropriate Bitcoin allocation or a rule for when to sell.
Set your risk limits before a sharp move
Choose an allocation you can live with
Decide what share of your overall portfolio, if any, you are willing and able to expose to Bitcoin-related risk. Consider both your willingness to tolerate a loss and your financial capacity to absorb one. There is no single percentage that fits everyone: the appropriate mix depends on your circumstances, time horizon, and risk tolerance.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Write down the limit and the reasoning behind it. If you later change the allocation, do so because your circumstances or plan have changed—not solely because a sudden price drop has intensified your emotions. The SEC advises investors not to let short-term emotions disrupt long-term investment objectives.
Keep essential finances out of speculative risk
The SEC advises paying off high-interest debt before investing and risking only money you can afford to lose entirely in a speculative investment. Money needed for near-term bills or other obligations is not a suitable cushion for enduring a volatile position.

Define what would change your decision
Record why you hold the exposure and what developments would make you reconsider it. Separate those conditions from a price move that is frightening but does not, by itself, answer whether your original reason still applies. This is a practical planning technique, not a regulator-prescribed trading rule.
Understand what kind of Bitcoin exposure you own
“Bitcoin exposure” can describe different arrangements. Their structures affect tracking, custody, and the disclosures you need to read; none removes the underlying risk of price losses.

| Exposure | What creates it | Structure and considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Direct Bitcoin | Holding Bitcoin itself | You must decide how the private keys are safeguarded—through a wallet you control or a third-party custodian. A wallet stores the keys that provide access; it does not manage market-price risk. |
| Spot Bitcoin ETP | An exchange-traded product that holds Bitcoin | Its share price may not track Bitcoin’s price perfectly. The SEC’s September 2024 bulletin describes spot Bitcoin ETPs as exchange-traded commodity trusts, not ETFs registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940. Do not assume protections apply identically across product structures. |
| Bitcoin futures fund | Futures contracts linked to Bitcoin | Futures contracts expire and positions are typically rolled into later contracts. The fund’s results can therefore be affected by its futures structure as well as Bitcoin-market movements. |
Before investing in an ETP or fund, read its current prospectus and risk disclosures. Product terms and regulatory guidance can change. For direct holdings, understand who controls the keys and how access could be recovered; custody decisions address access and safekeeping, not volatility.
Use diversification without mistaking it for protection
Spreading investments across asset types can lower overall portfolio risk. It cannot make Bitcoin safe, guarantee gains, assure recovery after a loss, or eliminate the possibility of losing money on Bitcoin exposure. Consider the risk of the whole portfolio rather than judging a Bitcoin position in isolation. The appropriate allocation depends on your objectives, circumstances, time horizon, and tolerance for loss.

A decision process for a steep price drop
- Pause before acting. If you are reacting to a frightening move, take time to review your written plan rather than making an impulsive decision. You may choose review intervals in advance and limit repeated price-checking; that is an optional behavioral tactic, not a proven schedule or official recommendation.
- Identify what you own. Check whether your exposure is direct Bitcoin, a spot ETP, or a futures fund. Review the relevant custody arrangement or product disclosures instead of assuming all forms behave the same way.
- Compare the situation with your stated reasons. Ask whether a condition you wrote down has changed, or whether the decision is being driven only by the size or speed of the price move.
- Check your finances and allocation. Consider whether the position remains within the limit you set and whether you need the money for near-term obligations. If it no longer fits your plan or finances, reassessing it is different from selling solely to stop the immediate discomfort.
- Make a deliberate decision. Apply the same criteria you would use in a calmer market. A plan supports consistency; it does not require holding through every loss or guarantee that any choice will turn out well.
