No. Never try to drive through a bison herd. If bison occupy a Yellowstone road, stop before the animals, stay in your vehicle, leave them room, and wait. Yellowstone National Park’s instruction is to “be patient, drive slowly, and stay in your vehicle” when bison are on the road (National Park Service safety guidance).

Do not honk, rev the engine, edge between animals, or use a road closure as a reason to improvise a detour. The safest choice is the one that preserves distance, keeps your vehicle out of moving traffic, and follows signs, gates, barricades, and current park conditions.

What should you do when bison block a Yellowstone road?

Approach the jam slowly, stop well before the herd, and remain inside your vehicle. Keep the engine quiet, do not pressure the animals to move, and wait until the road is clear enough to continue without reducing the animals’ space.

  1. Reduce speed early. Yellowstone roads are winding and wildlife can appear around a bend. The park’s posted speed limit is 45 mph (73 kph) unless a lower limit is posted, but the safe speed near animals may be much lower.
  2. Stop before the herd. Do not move into a narrowing gap or assume bison will maintain a predictable path.
  3. Stay inside. The National Park Service says viewing wildlife from inside a vehicle is safest. Do not step out for photographs, to direct traffic, or to judge a gap.
  4. Wait without provoking the animals. Avoid honking, revving, sudden acceleration, or repeated attempts to make bison move.
  5. Resume only when there is a clear, low-risk path. Drive slowly and be prepared to stop again if animals drift back toward the road.

A delay is safer than trying to squeeze between animals. Bison are wild, powerful, and unpredictable; Yellowstone’s safety information says they have injured more people in the park than any other animal and can run three times faster than humans.

How close is too close to a bison?

For Yellowstone, use the park-specific minimum of 25 yards (23 meters). If a bison comes within that distance, the National Park Service says visitors should turn around and go the other way if necessary. In a vehicle jam, that means do not advance toward an animal simply because the lane appears open.

You may also see a separate NPS general bison guideline of 100 feet (30 meters, about two bus lengths). The two figures are different formulations from different guidance pages. Because this question concerns Yellowstone, the park’s 25-yard instruction is the controlling local rule; the practical message is the same: preserve generous space and never test how close is safe.

Distance is not a license to approach slowly. Bison can change direction quickly, and a vehicle can trap an animal between cars, barriers, or a roadside drop-off. If the herd is moving along the road, leave room for it to pass rather than following closely.

Can you pass between bison if there is a gap?

No. A visible gap is not a safe or reliable route. Bison may step sideways, turn around, or accelerate without warning, and a driver cannot predict how the whole herd will react to a vehicle entering its space.

Do not “thread” a herd, drive onto a shoulder to get around it, or creep forward until animals yield. Those actions reduce the distance that protects both people and wildlife. Wait for the group to move away and for other vehicles to clear.

Should you pull over during a wildlife traffic jam?

Only use an established pullout when every wheel is safely off the travel lane and the maneuver does not crowd the herd. Never stop in a traffic lane for photographs or to watch bison.

Yellowstone roads can have soft shoulders, potholes, frost heaves, blind curves, and narrow sections. A vehicle partly in the lane can become a collision hazard, especially when approaching drivers cannot see it in time. If no pullout is available, remain stopped as far back from the animals as conditions allow and keep alert for traffic behind you.

Remain with the vehicle during the jam. Exiting to stand beside the road, walk toward the herd, or check the distance defeats the protection the vehicle provides. If passengers need to move, wait until the road situation is fully clear and a lawful, designated stopping area is available.

Is turning around safer than waiting?

Sometimes, but only when a legal, visible turnaround exists before the herd and the maneuver can be completed without entering the animals’ path or obstructing traffic. Waiting is usually the simplest option; turning around is not an excuse for a three-point turn beside bison or on a blind section of road.

Choice When it is appropriate Main risks to avoid
Wait The road is blocked but your vehicle can remain safely stopped outside the travel path. Do not edge forward, provoke animals, or stop where other drivers cannot see you.
Turn around A signed or clearly lawful turnaround or pullout is available well before the herd. Do not turn near animals, on a blind curve, across a soft shoulder, or where the maneuver blocks traffic.
Pull over An established pullout places the entire vehicle off the roadway. Do not use an informal shoulder, park in a lane, or leave the vehicle for photos.

Judge each option by five questions: Does it preserve animal distance? Does it keep the vehicle out of traffic? Is it legal? Can you abandon the maneuver safely? Is the decision based on current park information rather than a guess from GPS?

What if traffic backs up behind you?

Keep calm and maintain a safe position. Do not let pressure from following drivers make you move toward the herd. If an established pullout is immediately available and you can reach it without passing close to bison, use it; otherwise remain stopped and visible.

Traffic-related crashes are Yellowstone’s most common cause of injury and death, according to NPS driving guidance. Wildlife congestion, distracted photography, sudden stops, and impatient passing can compound that risk. Keep your attention on the road, leave space between vehicles, and expect animals to remain on or beside the pavement after the main group appears to have passed.

What does a Yellowstone road closure mean?

A closure is a legal access restriction, not a navigation puzzle. Yellowstone defines roads closed to non-official use as roads identified by signs, locked gates, or barricades. Do not drive around, move, or bypass a barrier.

Seasonal policy is especially important: from November 1 until spring opening in April or May, the Grand Loop Road and park entrance roads are closed to public wheeled motor vehicles, except for specified northern sections that remain open year-round. The exact opening date can vary, and seasonal rules do not guarantee that a road is open on a particular day. Weather, construction, emergencies, and temporary alerts can create additional closures.

If a closure appears after you enter the park, stop at the barrier or sign and follow posted instructions. Do not assume a nearby service road, pullout, or unmarked track is an authorized detour. Ask a ranger or consult the park’s current road-status information when that option is available.

How should you check road conditions before driving?

Check Yellowstone’s official current-conditions and road-status information immediately before departure and again when plans change. A route that was open yesterday can close because of weather, construction, an incident, or wildlife-management activity.

  1. Review the park’s current road closures and alerts.
  2. Compare the proposed route with an official Yellowstone map.
  3. Note seasonal opening dates, one-way sections, and the location of legal pullouts.
  4. Allow extra time for slow traffic, wildlife jams, winding roads, and long distances between services.
  5. Carry a paper Yellowstone National Park map or official park guide as a battery-free backup. It helps with orientation but cannot show a newly issued closure.

The NPS warns that vehicle-navigation systems and GPS units may provide inaccurate information. GPS can send drivers the wrong way on one-way roads, toward dead ends in remote areas, or onto roads closed at certain times of year. Treat the device as a secondary aid, not as authority over a gate or sign.

How do Yellowstone’s road conditions change the risk?

Even when no animals are present, Yellowstone driving requires conservative judgment. Roads can be narrow and winding, with soft shoulders, potholes, frost heaves, and sudden wildlife congestion. Long travel times mean that a route that looks short on a screen may take much longer in practice.

Keep both hands available, scan well ahead, and avoid stopping on curves or just beyond hill crests. If another vehicle is approaching while bison are near the roadway, prioritize a stable position over squeezing through. A few minutes of waiting is preferable to a collision, a blocked lane, or an animal being forced into traffic.

What should passengers and photographers do?

Passengers should remain inside the vehicle and keep doors and windows closed while bison are nearby. Photograph through the window from a safe distance; do not step onto the road, shoulder, or a pullout edge to obtain a closer view.

Do not use a telephoto photograph as a reason to advance. A picture is not worth narrowing the space around a wild animal or causing a line of vehicles to stop unpredictably. If the group moves away, continue to watch for stragglers before driving.

What if a bison approaches the vehicle?

Stay inside, stop if necessary, and give the animal time and space to pass. Do not open a door, touch the horn repeatedly, or accelerate toward it. If the animal is close enough that continuing would reduce the recommended distance, wait.

If a person is already on foot and a bison charges, NPS guidance is to move away rather than stand one’s ground. That emergency advice is not permission to exit during a road jam; drivers and passengers should avoid becoming pedestrians near bison in the first place.

What are the most common mistakes?

  • Trying to “just get through”: A vehicle does not make a wild animal predictable.
  • Honking or revving: Noise and aggressive movement can increase stress and unpredictability.
  • Stopping in the lane: A photo stop can become a rear-end collision.
  • Leaving the vehicle: Walking closer removes the protection of the car and violates the distance-first approach.
  • Following GPS around a barrier: A digital route cannot override a closure or seasonal restriction.
  • Assuming the road is clear after the main herd passes: Individual bison may remain near the pavement.
  • Using an informal shoulder as a turnaround: Soft edges and blind curves can cause a rollover or obstruct approaching traffic.

How do you make a safe decision at a bison road jam?

Use this quick sequence:

  1. Identify the control: Is there a sign, gate, barricade, ranger instruction, or active closure? If so, obey it.
  2. Protect distance: Stop before the animals and avoid entering their space.
  3. Protect the lane: Move fully into an established pullout only if you can do so safely; otherwise stay stopped and visible.
  4. Protect people: Keep everyone inside the vehicle.
  5. Choose the reversible action: Waiting is usually easier to undo than a turn or an improvised detour.
  6. Recheck information: Confirm current road status before attempting a different route.

The correct outcome may be a long delay or a change of itinerary. That is a normal part of driving in a large, remote park, not a failure of trip planning.

Where can you find an official Yellowstone map?

The National Park Service provides an official Yellowstone map and guide for trip planning. More detailed topographic maps are available through Yellowstone Forever or at park stores, according to NPS trip-planning information. Use a map to understand the road network, one-way sections, and possible legal pullouts before you travel.

A paper map complements live conditions; it does not replace them. Check the current road-status page immediately before driving, because a printed map cannot reflect a same-day closure, emergency, or weather restriction.

How we built this safety guidance

The recommendations prioritize Yellowstone’s own bison-distance and driving instructions, legal compliance with signs and barriers, vehicle containment, traffic safety, and the reliability of current park information. Where NPS pages use different distance figures, the Yellowstone-specific 25-yard rule is presented first because it matches this location and question.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I leave my car if bison are stopped far away?

Only at a lawful, designated stopping area and when animals are well beyond the park’s minimum distance; a roadside wildlife jam is not an appropriate place to get out. If bison are moving along the road or the distance is uncertain, remain inside the vehicle.

What should I do if a road closes after I have entered Yellowstone?

Stop at the closure sign, gate, or barricade and follow the posted direction or ranger instruction. Do not use an unmarked track or drive around the barrier; reassess your itinerary using current park information.

Does a paper Yellowstone map show live closures?

No. A paper map is useful for orientation and as a battery-free backup, but it cannot display a newly issued closure or emergency. Pair it with the park’s current road-status information.

Why might my GPS route be wrong in Yellowstone?

The National Park Service warns that GPS can route drivers onto one-way roads, dead ends, or roads closed seasonally. Check the official road status and map before following any route that conflicts with signs or gates.
