Birdfont is desktop software for drawing vector glyphs and assembling them into fonts. It is available for Windows, macOS, Linux, and BSD, but the right download and edition depend on your operating system, the formats you need, and how you plan to license and distribute the fonts you create.

What is Birdfont?

Birdfont describes itself as “a free font editor which lets you create vector graphics and export TTF, OTF and SVG fonts.” In practice, you draw glyphs as vector artwork, then use type-design tools to work on details such as spacing, kerning, ligatures, and alternate characters. The exact output formats and features available depend on the edition.

Birdfont is downloadable desktop software, not a physical product. Its official homepage and release notes introduce the application; the tools page describes functions, and the tutorials index provides learning material.

Which Birdfont edition should you choose?

Birdfont’s terms distinguish the editor’s software license from the permitted license or use of fonts made with it. The download page describes open-source software under the GNU GPL and freeware that allows fonts to be created under the SIL Open Font License (OFL). Its feature comparison separately marks commercial use for Commercial and Plus. Check the official terms for the edition you select and the font license you intend to apply; do not assume that “free” means every kind of font distribution is permitted.

Edition What the official comparison lists Use and license consideration
Freeware TTF, monochrome SVG, kerning, ligature substitutions, alternates, and SVG import. The download page says fonts may be created under the SIL Open Font License. Commercial use is not marked for this tier in the feature comparison.
Commercial TTF, monochrome SVG, kerning, ligature substitutions, alternates, and SVG import. Commercial use is marked as allowed. The comparison listed USD 4.99 or more and one year of upgrades; check the current terms and price on the official page.
Plus Includes the listed shared features, plus OTF, color-font formats, COLR/CPAL, single-stroke CNC fonts, and variable fonts. Commercial use is marked as allowed. The comparison listed USD 9.99 or more and one year of upgrades; check the current terms and price on the official page.

The comparison says the purchased version continues working after the one-year upgrade period. Because price and update terms can change, consult Birdfont’s edition, license, and feature comparison before buying or distributing a font.

Which formats and features are available?

The homepage broadly names TTF, OTF, and SVG export, but the edition comparison is more specific: TTF and monochrome SVG are listed across the editions, while OTF and the named color-font and variable-font features are assigned to Plus. Do not infer that a format shown on the homepage is available in every edition.

  • TTF and monochrome SVG: listed for Freeware, Commercial, and Plus.
  • OTF: listed for Plus.
  • Color fonts and COLR/CPAL: listed for Plus.
  • Variable fonts and single-stroke CNC fonts: listed for Plus.
  • Type-design tools: kerning, ligature substitutions, alternates, and SVG import appear in the comparison for all three editions.

Use the official comparison to confirm the current feature-to-edition mapping for your intended workflow.

What to check before creating or distributing a font

  • Choose the output first: confirm that your intended format—such as TTF, OTF, monochrome SVG, or a color-font format—is listed for the edition you plan to use.
  • Match the edition to distribution rights: read the official terms for both the software edition and the font license you intend to apply. The freeware page’s OFL statement and the comparison’s commercial-use labels address different questions.
  • Check your exact system: match the operating system version and processor to the listed package instead of choosing solely by platform name.
  • Use the tutorials for workflow guidance: Birdfont’s tutorials index and tools page are the official starting points for learning its interface and functions.
