BioWare is closing, and the early development project for the next Mass Effect is ending—but EA has not announced that released Dragon Age or Mass Effect games are being deleted, delisted, or switched off. Those are separate questions: the studio closure and project decision were announced on October 21, 2026, while each older game’s sales, downloads, online features, and offline play depend on its edition and platform. EA has not promised that every game or service will remain available forever, either.
What did BioWare and EA announce?
On October 21, 2026, BioWare said that it was closing and that early development on the next Mass Effect project was ending. EA made a separate announcement saying it had decided not to move forward with that development and was closing BioWare and its Edmonton workspace. These are confirmed decisions, not a rumor inferred from staff reductions.
The announcement has two distinct parts: BioWare is closing as a studio, and the early-stage Mass Effect project will not continue as announced. Neither statement says that EA is closing, that every game BioWare previously released is being withdrawn, or that an announced Dragon Age game has been canceled. Nor do the statements name a replacement developer, announce a sale of either franchise, or promise another installment.

Will your existing Dragon Age and Mass Effect games still work?
The October announcement does not itself switch off released games. But it is not a guarantee that every online feature, download, purchase entitlement, or installation will keep working indefinitely. EA treats online-service retirements as game- and feature-specific, so the sensible answer is to check the exact title and platform rather than assume either that everything is safe forever or that the whole series has shut down.
EA’s online-service policy says that individual services or features may be retired. It also notes that, in some instances, a game may still be playable offline after its online services are no longer available or supported. “In some instances” matters: that is not a promise about every game, mode, account check, edition, or platform. An offline mode might continue while an online feature does not; the policy does not establish how every title behaves in every scenario.
There is a concrete example of why platform details matter. EA’s service-retirement listing gives April 28, 2026 as the date for a Dragon Age: Inquisition service retirement on PlayStation 3, alongside separate older Dragon Age feature retirements. That is a notice about a particular platform and service—not evidence that the entire Dragon Age series, all versions of Inquisition, or the Mass Effect games stopped working. Do not treat it as a new October 2026 shutdown.

For a specific copy, check EA’s current service notices and help pages for the game and platform, and check the relevant console or PC store for its listing. Look for the exact edition, platform generation, and any named online feature. A notice about one console generation does not automatically apply to another; likewise, a store listing does not guarantee that every associated online function will remain available.

What is the difference between a game closing and a service shutting down?
A studio closure is an organizational change; a service retirement is a decision about a game feature or service. The first does not, by itself, establish the second. A released game can remain playable even when the studio that made it has closed, while an online function can be retired through a separate decision and notice.
It helps to separate several things that are often lumped together as “the game”:
- The released game: The software already published, whether obtained digitally or physically. BioWare’s closure announcement does not say that released titles are being erased.
- Storefront availability: Whether a particular edition can currently be bought from a specific store in a particular region. The studio announcement does not promise that listings will remain unchanged.
- Downloads and entitlements: Whether a purchaser can download a game or included add-on using the relevant account and platform. The closure announcement does not make a blanket promise about future access to downloads or entitlements.
- Online features: Any feature that relies on an online service. EA says services may be retired, and those decisions need to be checked for the specific game and platform.
- Offline play: A game or mode that can be played without an online service. EA says this may remain possible in some cases, not that every title or setup works offline.
These distinctions explain why “BioWare is closing” does not answer every practical question about a particular copy. It tells you what is happening to the studio and the announced early Mass Effect project. It does not provide a game-by-game schedule for future sales, downloads, server support, or offline access.
Which released editions are useful examples?
EA’s official descriptions show the range of editions people may mean when they ask about the series. They are examples of games already released, not guarantees about future store availability or platform support.

When checking either one—or a different entry in either series—match the edition and platform you own to the listing or support information you are reading. A listing for a current edition does not settle the status of an older console edition. Likewise, a collection’s advertised contents do not by themselves answer whether a particular account can still retrieve every included download in the future.
How should you check your own copy?
Start with the exact version you have, then check the relevant store and service notices. That is more reliable than trying to infer your game’s status from a studio announcement or from news about another platform.
- Identify the title and edition. Note whether you own an individual release, a collection, or another edition with named included content. Use the title shown in your library or on its store listing.
- Identify the platform. Write down the console generation or PC platform. A service notice for PlayStation 3, for example, is not automatically a notice for a different platform.
- Check the purchase route. Determine whether your copy is a purchase tied to an account, a subscription-library listing, or another access arrangement. Access through a membership is conditional on its terms and continued membership; it is not the same thing as owning a purchased copy.
- Read EA’s current service-retirement information. Look for the exact game, platform, feature, and date in the relevant notice. Do not generalize a notice about one feature or version to the entire franchise.
- Check the platform store or account library. Confirm what edition is currently listed and what the account identifies as owned or available. Current visibility answers what is listed now; it cannot guarantee future storefront or download access.
- Separate online needs from the main game. If a feature depends on an online service, check that feature specifically. Do not assume either that all play requires servers or that all play will work offline.
- Verify DLC and installation details before relying on them. Check the content included with your edition and the relevant account or platform information. Do not assume a disc contains the complete game or needs no download; that has not been established here.
If an older edition is not listed or a feature’s status is unclear, use the relevant platform and EA support information for that exact game. The public closure announcement does not resolve every individual entitlement, saved-game integration, installation, DLC, or online-mode question.
Does the closure cancel the next Mass Effect or a future Dragon Age?
The early-development Mass Effect project EA and BioWare referred to is ending. It is reasonable to say that the next Mass Effect effort announced as being in early development will not continue as announced; the available statements do not establish more about the project than that.

That does not prove that Mass Effect as a franchise is retired forever. The announcements also do not say that a particular future Dragon Age project has been canceled. Equally, they do not promise that either series will receive another game or name a new studio that will take over development. Claims that the franchises have been sold, permanently ended, or transferred to another developer go beyond what the announcements establish.
EA acquired BioWare, according to BioWare’s About page. The closure announcements do not describe a change in franchise ownership or set out a long-term development plan. They therefore support a narrower conclusion: BioWare is closing, the specified early Mass Effect project is ending, and the future development status of either series beyond those facts has not been announced.

Availability can vary by platform, region, edition, and store, so check the listing for your location and system before deciding what you can buy.

EA’s Dragon Age EA Play page lists The Veilguard in the Play List and says access continues while a person is a member, subject to the terms. That is subscription access, not a permanent copy: it depends on membership and the applicable terms. A purchased copy and access through a membership are different routes, but neither should be described as future-proof based on the information in the closure announcement.

If you are choosing a way to revisit a game, compare the exact edition and included DLC, platform compatibility, whether access is a purchase or membership, any required account or download steps, and which features use online services. Do not assume a physical edition is complete on-disc or that it can be installed without a download; those details have not been verified here.
What has EA not promised?
The confirmed announcements are significant, but they are not a blanket future-access policy. They do not promise that every released game will stay on every storefront, that every account will be able to download every item forever, or that every online feature will continue. They also do not announce a new server shutdown for the series, so it would be inaccurate to present an unverified one as a consequence of the closure.
Keep the conclusion narrow and practical: the studio and the specified early Mass Effect project are ending; released games were not announced as canceled or switched off; and the status of a particular service or edition needs to be checked separately. If EA later announces a service retirement, storefront change, franchise transaction, or development update, that new announcement would be the relevant information for that specific question.

Is Mass Effect 5 canceled?
EA and BioWare said the early-development next Mass Effect project would not move forward as announced. The statements do not establish whether a differently scoped future Mass Effect game could be proposed later.
Who owns Dragon Age now?
