The U.S. Army agreement announced on May 5, 2026, funds a 42-month development effort; it does not mean the system is already deployed or that the Army has adopted a finished product.
What Biosphere is developing
Biosphere says its proposed system combines UV-sterilized bioreactor technology with water and media recycling and downstream food processing. The goal is to turn resources available near the point of need into lightweight, nutrient-dense, ready-to-eat food. The company describes the approach as producing protein ration ingredients from air, water, and energy, then processing them into food.
In its May 5, 2026 announcement, Biosphere said the project will progress from process selection and system design to pilot-scale demonstrations and then a full-scale prototype intended for continuous operation. Work is planned at the company’s California facilities, with final product samples to be delivered to the Army Combat Feeding Division for evaluation. Those are planned project stages, not reported performance results.
What the Army agreement covers
Biosphere announced an Other Transaction Authority agreement made through the Office of the Undersecretary of War Manufacturing Science and Technology Program via the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Soldier Center (DEVCOM SC). The agreement has a total potential value of up to $9 million, and the development effort is planned to last 42 months, according to the company.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The distinction matters: the agreement supports development and demonstration. It is not evidence that soldiers are currently eating food produced by this system or that the Army has approved it for field use.
How many people could it feed?
Biosphere’s announced target is 2,800 calories per person per day for up to 18 warfighters, with plans to scale the system to support 250 personnel. These are company-stated goals, not verified daily output or demonstrated capacity.

The Army’s broader SBIR/STTR topic describes separate program objectives for modular, autonomous forward-deployed biomanufacturing components. It lists a ration objective of 3,600 kilocalories in no more than 900 grams, nutrition standards within ±10%, and sensory scores above 6 on a 9-point hedonic scale. Those are Army program criteria, not Biosphere-specific test results; the topic’s publication year is not stated. See the Army SBIR/STTR program topic.
Why produce food near deployed troops?
The Army frames point-of-need food production as a way to reduce the logistical burden of supplying units in contested or denied environments. The concept is to make food from resources available at or near the operating location, potentially reducing reliance on shipments for some needs. It does not establish that a bioreactor can replace food supply lines: the system itself still needs feedstocks, energy, water handling, processing equipment, and operational support.

Biosphere CEO Brian Heligman described the project as part of the company’s effort to develop rapidly deployable biomanufacturing systems. DEVCOM Soldier Center Technical Lead Nicole Favreau Farhadi said the effort reflects a focus on resilient forward-deployed capabilities that could reduce logistical burden and increase operational flexibility. These statements explain the intended value of the work; they are not independent evidence that the system has achieved those outcomes.
How this differs from other military ration technology
Biosphere’s proposal is a biomanufacturing project. It should not be confused with a separate military ration effort involving Bridgford Foods and EnWave. EnWave reported in 2023 that it had signed a royalty-bearing commercial license with Bridgford for certain military ration products using Radiant Energy Vacuum (REV) dehydration technology, and that Bridgford purchased a 120 kW REV machine. EnWave also said a manufacturing technology grant would guarantee the U.S. Department of Defense certain manufacturing capacity at Bridgford’s facility for close-combat field rations. EnWave’s 2023 announcement describes that project; its process is dehydration, not Biosphere’s proposed bioreactor approach.

EnWave’s earlier 2021 announcement described an Army cooperative research and development agreement involving evaluation and a license option for REV-dried baked goods and meat products. That is historical context for another ration-processing pathway, not evidence about Biosphere’s system. Read EnWave’s 2021 announcement.

The announced plans and targets do not establish whether the proposed system can meet military requirements in field conditions. Meaningful evaluation would need to address the full system, not just the bioreactor: resource and energy needs, reliable output, food safety, nutrition, taste, shelf stability, equipment mass, water and media recycling, and downstream processing. The available announcements do not provide completed comparative performance data or independent findings on food safety or acceptance.

The central question is whether a portable production system can reliably deliver acceptable food with a logistics burden low enough to help in the environments it is designed for. Biosphere’s planned pilot demonstrations and Army sample evaluation are steps toward answering that question, not proof of the answer.
