In the original BioShock, Plasmids are active powers paid for with EVE, Gene Tonics are passive bonuses, and ADAM buys new abilities and upgrades. The Little Sister decision ties those systems to the story: Harvesting gives more ADAM immediately, while Rescuing gives less at first but can bring delayed gifts. The choice also shapes the ending you see. This guide explains how the systems fit together and how to decide what matters most to your play style. Ending details below contain spoilers.
What do Plasmids do in BioShock?
Plasmids are abilities Jack actively triggers during play. They can help deal damage, control a fight, interact with the environment, manipulate security, or set up a weapon attack. Unlike a passive bonus, a Plasmid asks you to choose when to use it—and each use consumes EVE.
The official remastered manual describes Plasmids as being powered by EVE, a serum that lets Jack use them. If his EVE runs out, he cannot activate them until he replenishes it. EVE can be restored with EVE hypos, purchases from vending machines, and some food or drink.
Jack starts with two open Plasmid slots. More can be obtained by spending ADAM, so choosing a loadout involves two decisions: which abilities to acquire and how many slots to invest in. More abilities offer more responses to different situations, but they do not remove the need to manage EVE.

Choose powers by the problem they solve
There is no single best Plasmid loadout for every player. The value of an active power changes with the difficulty, the weapons you have available, the enemy you face, and whether you prefer direct combat or tactical setup. A useful way to evaluate a Plasmid is to ask what recurring problem it solves: does it help you handle a group, take advantage of the surroundings, interfere with security, or make a weapon attack more effective?
That question also helps when slots are scarce. A power that is useful only in a narrow situation may be less valuable to keep equipped than one that gives you options in many encounters. But a specialist ability can earn its place if it addresses a challenge you regularly struggle with. Gene Banks let you rearrange collected abilities, so your equipped choices need not be treated as permanent.
What are Gene Tonics?
Gene Tonics are passive bonuses: once equipped, they alter Jack’s abilities without requiring the player to trigger them like a Plasmid. The official manual divides them into Physical, Engineering, and Combat categories.
- Physical Tonics improve bodily abilities. The manual’s examples include resistance to particular kinds of damage and the ability to process toxins.
- Engineering Tonics improve intellect and dexterity for tasks such as hacking and bypassing security.
- Combat Tonics improve reflexes and strength, including melee damage and the effectiveness of electrical attacks.
The practical distinction is active versus passive. A Plasmid gives you an action that costs EVE; a Tonic changes what Jack can do or how well he does it while it is equipped. Tonics can therefore support a combat style, make utility tasks more effective, or improve survival without adding another ability to activate mid-fight.
Like Plasmids, Tonics have an opportunity cost: the game limits equipped slots. A sensible setup weighs a bonus’s relevance against what else could occupy that slot. An Engineering bonus is more valuable to a player who wants help with hacking and security than to someone who rarely relies on those systems. A Combat bonus is more attractive when its effect complements the player’s preferred approach. The categories help identify a Tonic’s purpose; they do not establish one universally superior combination.
What is the difference between ADAM and EVE?
ADAM is the progression currency; EVE is the resource used to activate Plasmids. In short, ADAM helps determine what Jack can acquire and equip, while EVE determines how often he can use his active powers.

Gatherer’s Gardens are where ADAM turns into progression. Gene Banks serve a different purpose: they let you rearrange which abilities you have collected and equipped. Keeping those roles distinct avoids a common confusion: ADAM buys the options, while EVE pays for Plasmid use during play.

How do Little Sisters and Big Daddies fit into the resource system?
Little Sisters gather ADAM from corpses, and Big Daddies protect them. The sequence described by the game’s manual is to defeat the Big Daddy, then choose what to do with the Little Sister. That makes the encounter a gateway to a resource decision, not simply another fight.
Harvesting extracts the maximum immediate ADAM but kills the Little Sister. Rescuing kills the parasite that lets her process ADAM and returns less ADAM immediately. The decision affects the pace at which you can afford a new ability, slot, or upgrade, so its mechanical stakes are real even before considering the story.
The game frames that economy against a human cost. The manual puts it plainly: “Nothing is free in Rapture and even this choice has a cost.” That cost is not just a number on a purchase screen; the player has to decide whether immediate progression justifies the action required to get it.
Should I Harvest or Rescue the Little Sisters?
Harvesting is the better choice if the only goal is to maximize immediate ADAM from each Little Sister. Rescuing gives less ADAM right away but provides delayed gifts, and it avoids killing the girls. The difference in the long-run resource total is much smaller than the initial choice-screen comparison suggests.

Those figures show why Harvesting can look tempting at the moment of choice: three Harvests yield 40 more ADAM than three Rescues plus the first 200-ADAM gift. But that is not the whole long-run comparison. Domsch’s 2013 analysis calculates a 280-ADAM total difference between the all-Harvest and all-Rescue paths and describes five gifted items as worth two to four times comparable Plasmids or Tonics, depending on play style. A contemporary walkthrough also gives the same immediate relationship—80 ADAM for a Rescue and twice that for a Harvest—and recommends Rescuing because later rewards can outweigh the initial shortfall.

The gifts are not equivalent to a fixed cash payment for every player: their value depends on whether the items suit your play style. The figures are from the cited 2013 analysis of game mechanics, not a current price list or a promise that every player will value the gifts the same way. The useful decision is therefore not “Does Rescue give nothing?” It gives less immediately, with later rewards; Harvesting concentrates more of the payout at the time of the encounter.
Decide based on both progression and the act
If you are prioritizing immediate purchasing power, Harvesting is mechanically more rewarding per encounter. If you can accept a smaller initial payout and value the delayed gifts or the act of sparing the Little Sisters, Rescuing is a viable progression path rather than a simple trap. The resource comparison can inform your decision, but it cannot decide what the choice should mean to you.
Does saving the Little Sisters change the ending?
Yes. The Little Sister choices affect the ending route, though the researched accounts describe the structure at different levels of detail. Sebastian Domsch’s scholarly analysis discusses three ending cut scenes determined by how the player treats the Little Sisters; creator Ken Levine discussed two broad ending paths and said the exact threshold for the best ending was intentionally not disclosed. It is more accurate to describe the broad contrast than to promise a precise threshold beyond the documented all-Rescue path.
Rescuing all of the Little Sisters leads to the benevolent ending in which Jack leaves Rapture with the girls, who become part of his life. A Harvest path leads to the darker outcome in which Jack turns toward domination and exploitation. An encyclopedia summary describes the broad split as all-Rescue versus Harvesting any Little Sister, but Levine’s comments caution against treating the ending as a simple threshold puzzle. The evidence supports a broad route distinction, not a claim that the choice creates an elaborate reputation system or transforms the world around Jack.
The decision’s consequences are concentrated in progression economics, delayed gifts, the player’s own interpretation of their behavior, and the ending presentation. It does not create a sprawling branching simulation in which every character and system responds to a running moral score. That limited scope is part of the critical debate over the game’s moral design.
Why does the choice feel morally ambiguous?
BioShock does not reduce the decision to an explicit angel-versus-devil label. Levine said the development team removed that kind of signposting because Atlas and Tenenbaum offer different but compelling positions. He also said players often think about whether they are a saver or a harvester, rather than only calculating a maximum or minimum reward. As he put it of the ending design, “it was never my intention to do two endings for the game.”

The tension is between gameplay rationality and the fictional moral situation. Harvesting offers a tangible, immediate advantage, but the player gets that advantage by treating a vulnerable child as a resource. Rescuing accepts a short-term disadvantage in exchange for delayed rewards and a different relationship to the people and world in Rapture. The game lets the player perform the calculation and then asks what that calculation says about their choices.

That ambiguity does not mean the options are mechanically identical or that the ending is irrelevant. It means the game does not assign a simple morality label at the instant of choice. The player’s interpretation matters alongside the resource payoff, and the two may point in different directions.

There is no evidence-based universal “best build” in the documented systems: the manuals explain categories, slots, and resource costs, but the value of a power or bonus depends on how you play and what challenges you face. A more useful approach is to build around a role and check that each equipped option has a job.
For direct combat
Favor offensive Plasmids that complement your weapons and Combat Tonics that reinforce your chosen style. Consider the EVE cost before relying on active powers for every encounter; a strong ability is not available when your EVE supply is empty.
For control and setup
Choose Plasmids for crowd control or for setting up a weapon attack, rather than assuming that every ability needs to deal damage on its own. This approach uses powers to change the conditions of a fight and can make your weapon choices part of the same plan.
For security and interaction
Give priority to utility Plasmids that manipulate security or interact with the environment, paired where useful with Engineering Tonics for hacking and bypassing security. This combination makes more sense for a player who engages with those systems than for one who does not.

Mix powers that address different kinds of problems, then use Gene Banks to change equipped abilities when a different challenge calls for it. Because slots are limited, avoid filling every slot with abilities that solve the same problem unless that specialization is deliberate.
