Do not turn off the computer solely because a BIOS update has taken 45 minutes. That elapsed time does not prove the update has failed, and there is no manufacturer-backed universal cutoff. If a progress bar is still moving, keep the computer on stable AC power and let the process continue. If the screen is blank, an error is displayed, or the percentage has not changed, identify the exact model and update method and follow that manufacturer’s instructions before interrupting firmware installation.

What to do right now

  1. Keep power connected. Leave the AC adapter plugged in. Do not remove a battery, unplug a desktop, close a laptop lid if it may sleep, or force-restart while firmware may be writing.
  2. Check the screen carefully. Note the exact percentage, status text, error message, and whether the indicator is changing. A display that looks idle is not proof that flashing has stopped.
  3. Identify the system. Record the manufacturer, complete model number, BIOS version if shown, update source (Windows Update, vendor utility, or BIOS setup), and how long the display has been unchanged.
  4. Open the official support page for that exact model. Use its instructions for a live update, apparent freeze, or recovery. If no clear next step is provided, contact the manufacturer before cutting power.

HP’s business-notebook instructions, for example, warn not to turn off or restart before completion and describe possible automatic recovery. Other manufacturers use different procedures, so generic key combinations or USB recipes are unsafe assumptions.

When a “frozen” screen may still be updating

ASUS documents a narrow exception for specified NUC and ROG NUC systems on affected BIOS versions updated through Windows Update. The screen can appear unresponsive while the flash continues in the background. For the models and versions listed in ASUS’s NUC notice, the instruction is to wait until the progress bar reaches 100%; only after that point does the notice describe power-down action.

Do not apply that 100% rule to another ASUS computer or to a different update method. If your model is not explicitly covered, treat an unchanged or blank display as an unresolved firmware state and obtain model-specific guidance.

What the timing evidence does—and does not—tell you

Figure Process What it means
1–5 minutes ASUS Cloud Update download on supported systems ASUS describes this as a typical download time, dependent on network and system configuration. It is not a duration for flashing or for the complete BIOS update.
Two to three minutes A particular Lenovo BIOS-recovery procedure Lenovo states this duration for that documented recovery process, not for ordinary BIOS updates generally.
45+ minutes Your current update No reviewed manufacturer source establishes this as either normal completion time or a universal failure threshold.

If the progress indicator is still active

  • Keep AC power connected and wait while the percentage or status changes.
  • Do not start another BIOS tool, open the lid repeatedly, or disconnect external power to “speed it up.”
  • Use the exact model’s support page to determine what completion, reboot, or recovery screens should look like.

If progress is unchanged or the screen is blank

  1. Write down the model, visible BIOS version, update source, displayed text or percentage, and the time at which it stopped changing.
  2. Search the manufacturer’s support site using that complete model identifier and the terms “BIOS update interrupted,” “BIOS recovery,” or “BIOS update stuck.”
  3. Follow a procedure only when it names your model or model family and matches your update method.
  4. If the documentation does not authorize a safe intervention, contact support with your recorded details. Avoid a forced shutdown merely because a fixed number of minutes has elapsed.

If the update already failed or was interrupted

Recovery is model-specific. Do not copy a jumper setting, key combination, or BIOS filename convention from another computer.

ASUS systems

ASUS’s notebook/AIO interruption guidance requires the AC adapter during updating and warns against a forced shutdown. Its recovery routes can include a FAT32 USB drive containing the matching BIOS file, but the required file and method depend on the model. ASUS EZ Flash instructions likewise require selecting the BIOS file for the exact device.

Lenovo systems

Lenovo’s cited recovery documentation uses a recovery disc and motherboard jumper for the named system documentation. That is not a general Lenovo or PC procedure.

Any manufacturer

Download firmware only from the official support page for the exact model. A USB flash drive is useful only when that documented recovery method calls for one; it cannot safely “fix” an update that may still be running.

  • 5.5.Tips: Some chips are affected by peripheral circuits and cannot be clipped directly. Please check the chip location on the motherboard before purchasing!

Prepare before the next BIOS update

  • Verify identity and version: Dell describes checking BIOS Setup or Windows System Information by running msinfo32; ASUS directs users to the support page for the device model. Confirm the file matches exactly.
  • Back up important data: Dell’s BIOS guide recommends a backup before updating.
  • Use stable power: Dell calls for AC power and at least 10% battery charge. ASUS EZ Flash guidance for its covered procedures calls for at least 20% battery plus a power source. These are vendor-specific requirements, not a universal percentage.
  • Plan for encryption: Dell recommends suspending BitLocker; otherwise Windows may request the recovery key after restart. ASUS also notes that a recovery-key prompt can follow a BIOS update. Have the key available before starting.
  • Update for a reason: Install an official release that addresses a needed security fix, compatibility issue, or hardware support requirement rather than updating casually.

Bottom line

Forty-five minutes alone is not a safe reason to power off. Keep power stable while progress is active, document the exact model and screen state if it is unchanged, and use only the manufacturer’s instructions for that system and update method. Interrupt power only when the applicable manufacturer guidance explicitly permits it.
