Biodegradable nanoparticle fertilizers differ from conventional fertilizers mainly in how they are designed to deliver nutrients: a nano-enabled formulation may use a nanoscale carrier to influence where or when nutrients become available. That does not automatically make it biodegradable, safer, more effective, or a replacement for conventional fertilizer. Those claims depend on the specific formulation, its degradation evidence, and crop-specific field results.

What makes a fertilizer a nanoparticle fertilizer?

“Nanofertilizer” is an umbrella term for different approaches to using nanoscale materials in plant nutrition. A formulation might put nutrients inside a nanoscale carrier, attach them to a carrier, or use nutrient particles that are themselves nanoscale. The term alone does not tell you which approach a product uses—or whether its carrier is biodegradable.

Conventional mineral fertilizers provide nutrients without requiring a nanoscale delivery vehicle. The two categories are not always a simple old-versus-new comparison: products can differ in nutrient form, dose, placement, timing, and whether the nano-enabled product supplements or replaces other inputs.

How do their delivery and release differ?

Comparison Biodegradable nanoparticle formulation Conventional fertilizer
Nutrient delivery May use a nanoscale carrier or nutrient particle; composition varies by formulation. Supplies nutrients without a nanoscale carrier architecture.
Release behavior Some formulations are designed for slow or controlled release. Performance depends on the formulation and growing conditions. Availability depends on fertilizer chemistry, placement, and conditions.
Biodegradation Needs evidence for the actual carrier, including what it degrades into and under what conditions. The category label is not proof. A nano-carrier degradation claim does not apply, though coatings or additives may have their own material properties.
Environmental effects Reduced nutrient loss is a potential outcome, not a guarantee; environmental fate and ecological effects need evaluation. Excess use and nutrient losses are recognized concerns.
Evidence to compare Look for formulation data, release measurements, crop trials, application directions, and fate or safety evidence. Compare nutrient analysis, price per nutrient unit, application requirements, and local agronomic guidance.

Controlled release is a design aim for some nano-enabled systems, not a property of every product described as a nanofertilizer. Likewise, “biodegradable” should be supported by material-specific evidence; the reviewed literature does not establish one universal degradation period or test result for the whole category.

Do biodegradable nanofertilizers increase yield?

There is no basis for a universal yield claim. Results depend on the crop, formulation, dose, application method, and what other nutrients were supplied. Two 2024 field studies illustrate why the exact treatment matters:

Wheat–maize system

A 2024 Scientific Reports field study assessed nitrogen and zinc nano-fertilizers alongside conventional fertilizer and soil biological indicators. Its abstract reports grain yields at par for wheat and maize under specified integrated treatments using 75% of recommended nitrogen, full conventional phosphorus and potassium, and nano nitrogen—with or without nano zinc—compared with the full recommended conventional NPK treatment. This finding concerns those treatments and trial conditions; it does not establish statistical equivalence for all nano-fertilizers or show that a biodegradable carrier alone can replace conventional fertilizer.

Rice

A 2024 field study in Frontiers in Environmental Science used a randomized block design with ten treatments and three replications to examine integrated nano-DAP applications. The authors identified a treatment combining part of the soil-test recommendation with seedling root dipping and foliar nano-DAP as a possible substitute under the trial conditions. Because the treatment retained conventional soil-test inputs, it should not be read as evidence that nano-DAP alone replaces a complete conventional fertilizer program.

Are nano fertilizers safer for soil and the environment?

They may be developed to improve nutrient-use efficiency, but a proposed delivery benefit is not proof of lower runoff, emissions, fertilizer use, or cost. Reviews identify open questions about the fate of excess nanomaterials, interactions with soil microbiomes, and possible human-health and ecosystem effects. Conventional fertilizer use also has environmental risks when nutrients are lost or applied excessively; the comparison should be based on evidence for the particular product and use, not a blanket assumption that either category is harmless.

For biodegradable formulations, ask what the carrier becomes as it degrades and whether degradation has been demonstrated under conditions relevant to the intended soil and use. A general “biodegradable” label does not answer those questions.

What should you check before comparing products?

  • Composition: Identify the nutrient form and the carrier material. Find out whether the nutrient is encapsulated, adsorbed, or itself a nanoparticle.
  • Degradation evidence: Request results for the actual carrier, including degradation conditions and products, rather than relying on a broad category claim.
  • Release data: Check whether release was measured for the formulation and under conditions relevant to its intended application.
  • Comparable crop trials: Prefer field evidence for the same crop and comparable soil, dose, application method, and conventional nutrient inputs. Integrated treatments should not be presented as direct product-for-product replacements.
  • Practical instructions: Confirm application rate, placement, timing, compatibility with other inputs, and any handling requirements.
  • Environmental and cost information: Look for evidence on environmental fate and safety, and compare cost per nutrient unit and the full application program where those figures are available.

These distinctions are consistent with the reviews “Slow and controlled release nanofertilizers as an efficient tool for sustainable agriculture: Recent understanding and concerns” by Haydar, Ghosh, and Roy (2024), “Nanotechnology in plant nutrition: Ensuring sustainable agriculture through nanofertilizers” by Mehta et al. (first published March 12, 2024), and “Review of research and innovation on novel fertilizers for crop nutrition” (2025).
