NASA recommends 7×35 to 10×50 binoculars for viewing the galaxy from dark skies. A telescope can make a smaller region look larger and reveal more detail, but its eyepiece may not frame the whole galaxy at once.
What Andromeda looks like through either instrument
Set expectations for a faint, elongated haze with a brighter central area—not a colorful, sharply detailed image. The visual view through binoculars or a telescope is very different from processed astrophotography.
Andromeda is about 2.5 million light-years away. NASA lists its apparent magnitude as 3.1 and its apparent diameter as roughly six times the full Moon’s diameter. Its large apparent size helps explain why magnification alone is not the best measure of which instrument will show more of the galaxy at once. NASA’s Messier 31 guide provides these figures.
Binoculars: best for a wide view and simple setup
NASA’s Night Sky Network recommends binoculars in the 7×35 to 10×50 range for observing Andromeda from dark skies. In a specification such as 10×50, 10× is the magnification and 50 mm is the diameter of each objective lens. Binoculars’ wide field of view makes them useful when the aim is to take in more of the galaxy and its surroundings together.

They are also straightforward to carry and use: look through both eyepieces, point toward the target, and scan a wider patch of sky than many telescope eyepieces show. Larger or higher-power binoculars can be heavy or difficult to hold steady; a tripod and binocular adapter can help, though many binoculars do not require one.
Telescope: best for magnifying a smaller part
A telescope is the better choice if your priority is to make a smaller part of Andromeda appear larger. How much detail is visible depends on both magnification and sky quality, so begin at low power rather than immediately choosing the highest magnification available.

The trade-off is field of view. NASA notes that most telescopes cannot keep the entire Andromeda Galaxy inside the view of most eyepieces. A telescope may show a more enlarged portion while leaving the galaxy’s outer extent outside the frame; a low-power eyepiece gives you a better chance of a wider view.
Choose by what you want to see
| What matters most | Better starting choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Seeing Andromeda as a broad object | 7×35 to 10×50 binoculars | NASA recommends this range for dark-sky viewing, and binoculars provide a wide field. |
| Magnifying a smaller area | Telescope at low power to start | A telescope can enlarge a region; higher magnification and sky conditions affect visible detail. |
| Keeping setup simple and portable | Binoculars | They are generally simpler to carry and point, though larger models may need steadier support. |
| Fitting the whole galaxy in the view | Binoculars are the more suitable starting point | Most telescope eyepieces cannot frame all of Andromeda at once. |
Make the most of the view
- Choose a dark observing location; NASA’s binocular guidance specifically ties its Andromeda recommendation to dark skies.
- With a telescope, start with a low-power eyepiece and adjust only if the view remains clear and useful.
- Give larger or higher-power binoculars support if hand movement makes the image unsteady.
- Try instruments at an in-person observing event before choosing one; NASA suggests this as a way to learn what different instruments show.
