Microsoft did not officially remove the Bing Chat waitlist in March 2023. On March 16, reports said some accounts were getting immediate access, but the company described this as an experiment during an ongoing preview. Microsoft formally eliminated the waitlist on May 4, when it moved Bing from Limited Preview to Open Preview. Separately, it confirmed on March 14 that the new Bing was powered by GPT-4 customized for search.
What happened with the Bing Chat waitlist?
The March 16, 2023 headline that Bing was “said to remove” its waitlist reflected reports of early access for some people—not a confirmed change for everyone. TechCrunch reported that some accounts could use Bing Chat immediately, while not all accounts it tested could. Microsoft said it was testing ways to accelerate access for some users and that Bing remained in preview. TechCrunch’s March 16 report attributed this statement to a Microsoft spokesperson: “During this preview period, we are running various tests which may accelerate access to the new Bing for some users. We remain in preview and you can sign up at Bing.com,”
Microsoft’s formal announcement came later. On May 4, it said Bing was moving from Limited Preview to Open Preview and that it was eliminating the trial waitlist. The distinction is important: March brought reports of experimental, uneven access; May brought Microsoft’s explicit announcement that the waitlist was ending.
Timeline: GPT-4 confirmation and waitlist removal
| Date | What Microsoft or reporters said | What it meant for access |
|---|---|---|
| February 7, 2023 | Microsoft launched the new AI-powered Bing and Edge as a limited preview. Its May announcement later described the launch. | People could try sample queries and sign up for the waitlist. |
| March 14, 2023 | Microsoft confirmed that “the new Bing is running on GPT-4, which we’ve customized for search.” It said preview users had experienced an early version during the previous five weeks. | This confirmed the model behind Bing; it did not announce a waitlist change. |
| March 16, 2023 | TechCrunch reported immediate access for some tested accounts, but not all. Microsoft described possible accelerated access as an ongoing preview experiment. | Access was inconsistent; Microsoft had not announced universal waitlist removal. |
| May 4, 2023 | Microsoft announced Open Preview and said it was eliminating the waitlist. | This was the formal waitlist-removal announcement. |
Microsoft’s March 14 confirmation of GPT-4 came before its formal waitlist-removal announcement, but the company said preview users had already experienced an early version of the model in the preceding five weeks. These are separate dates: public confirmation is not the same as first use by preview participants.

What Microsoft announced on May 4
Microsoft said people could try the new Bing and Edge by signing into Bing with a Microsoft Account. Yusuf Mehdi, then Microsoft Corporate Vice President and Consumer Chief Marketing Officer, wrote: “This means that it will now be easier than ever for everyone to try the new Bing and Edge by simply signing into Bing with your Microsoft Account.” Read this as the access arrangement announced in May 2023, not as a statement of today’s access rules.
The announcement also reported the service’s early usage: Microsoft said that in its first 90 days customers had engaged in more than 500 million chats, users had created more than 200 million images with Bing Image Creator, and Bing had exceeded 100 million daily active users. It also said daily installs of the Bing mobile app had increased fourfold since launch. These are figures Microsoft reported on May 4, 2023, not independently established current metrics.

Was Bing Chat using GPT-4 before OpenAI announced GPT-4?
Microsoft publicly confirmed Bing’s GPT-4 basis on March 14, 2023, describing it as GPT-4 customized for search. In that same announcement, Microsoft said preview users had been experiencing an early version for the previous five weeks. So the public confirmation followed the reported preview use; the announcement does not establish a more exact first-use date.
