BiKN was more than an iPhone case: it paired a dock-connector case, clip-on radio tags, and an app to help locate tagged belongings and page the phone. But the available sources do not document an actual teardown, so they cannot confirm how the case opens, what its internal layout looks like, or whether it can be repaired.
What the BiKN Smart Case was
Fahrenheit Design describes the “Treehouse Labs BiKN Smart Case and Tags” as a system for inventorying, tracking, and finding belongings. The case connected to an iPhone through its dock connector, while the case and tags used compact, low-power wireless radios and rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, according to the Fahrenheit Design product description.

Launch-era reporting describes tags clipped to objects such as keys or a bag. The app could help locate those objects, and a tag could page the iPhone. These were the product’s intended functions as described at launch, not performance verified by a teardown or current test. Engadget’s 2012 launch report covers the system’s original use case.
What is reported about the hardware
A 2012 technical article identifies BiKN as a short-range case for iPhone 4 and reports an embedded NXP JN5148 wireless controller and an independent rechargeable 300 mAh battery. Those details are reported specifications, not independently confirmed observations from an opened unit. See CNX Software’s technical report, published January 5, 2012.

The 300 mAh figure refers to the battery capacity attributed to the BiKN system in that report. It should not be treated as a measured capacity or as evidence of battery condition in any individual case.
What a teardown cannot establish from these sources
No dedicated BiKN teardown or disassembly guide appears among the available sources. As a result, they do not establish the case’s internal component placement, enclosure fasteners or adhesive, cable routing, battery access, repairability, or common failure modes. Product descriptions and reported specifications cannot answer those questions in place of an inspection.
Likewise, launch-era range or performance descriptions are historical claims, not current or independently tested measurements. Company founder and CEO John Howard described the intended two-way use as follows: “It’s not just an alarm or a tether. BiKN enables your iPhone to keep up with your stuff and your stuff to page your phone. Even if it is dead or turned off.” The quotation is attributed to Howard in a historical ecoustics product report; it expresses the company’s pitch, not a neutral test result.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What buyers and owners should verify
BiKN is a historical accessory built around an iPhone dock connector, and the technical report identifies it with iPhone 4. The reviewed sources do not establish whether the app and tags still work, whether a current listing or stock is available, or whether the system supports modern iPhones. Verify those details for the exact unit and phone before buying or relying on it.
Quick Recap
- Confirm the case connector matches the intended iPhone; do not assume compatibility with newer models.
- Check whether the app can still be obtained and used on the intended phone, and whether the tags pair and respond.
- Inspect the actual case and tags for battery condition and operation; published descriptions do not establish the condition of a used unit.
