Kewa cannot be made to follow a route indefinitely. The whale chooses where to travel according to its own needs and may leave your requested destination to eat. A stable colony treats that behavior as a planning constraint: keep food, water and energy production ahead of demand; maintain reserves; house workers within 16 tiles of essential jobs; protect fertile, flooded and forested ground; and control pollution. If Kewa leaves a resource region, pause nonessential expansion, use stored inputs or substitutes, and return to that interstellar neighborhood only when Kewa’s needs and route allow it.
Why does Kewa change course in Beyond These Stars?
Kewa is an autonomous companion rather than a transport vehicle that obeys every destination command. The official Beyond These Stars Wiki describes Kewa as travelling the galaxy, eating asteroid belts and debris fields, and deciding where to go based on what it needs. You can ask for a destination with the Strange Transmitter, but that request is not a guarantee of a direct trip.
The reason is the relationship between the whale and the settlement. The Peeps depend on Kewa for water and fertile ground, while the settlement improves the biome on Kewa’s back. The official wiki summarizes the arrangement this way: “The Peeps’ Settlement impacts the wellbeing of their companion, and Kewa will go against their wishes in order to care for themself if they must.” In practical terms, a hungry or unhealthy Kewa can override your logistics plan.

What should I check before asking Kewa to travel?
Make the colony resilient before issuing a travel request. A detour is much easier to absorb when the settlement can operate from reserves and does not rely on one newly built workplace or one nearby resource patch.
- Check food and water output versus consumption. Look at the current trend, not only the amount in storage. A positive balance gives you time if production pauses or a route changes; a negative balance means a detour can become a crisis quickly.
- Check energy and sickness. Low energy can cause sickness at shift change. Sick Peeps stay home, reducing the workforce just when a travel transition may already disrupt production.
- Count idle workers and open jobs. Add housing before adding another chain of jobs. A colony that is already short of workers has no buffer for illness, unhappiness or a longer supply route.
- Inspect storage capacity. Reserves only help if incoming food, water, fuel or industrial inputs have somewhere to go. Expand storage or create downstream uses before a large production run fills every container.
- Review the biome overlay. Identify fertile and flooded tiles, existing forests, bare ground and polluted areas. These are not cosmetic statistics: biome health affects Kewa’s health and happiness and your ability to expand.
- Mark essential workplaces. Housing should be close enough that workers can reach the jobs that keep food, water, energy and cleanup running. Peeps only take jobs within 16 tiles of home.
- Separate essential construction from discretionary construction. Queue repairs, storage, housing and pollution control first. Decorative or speculative expansion can wait until the route is stable.
Do not interpret a full warehouse as permission to spend every reserve. Leave room for a route change, an illness wave and the time needed to rebuild a production chain. Because no authoritative source gives a universal reserve size, use your own consumption rate and the length of the planned journey to decide how much buffer is prudent.
How do I stop Kewa from changing direction?
You cannot permanently prevent a need-driven detour. You can reduce avoidable interruptions by improving the settlement that Kewa is carrying and by making travel requests only when the colony can tolerate a change in plan.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Use the Strange Transmitter to request a destination, then treat the request as an intention rather than a command. If Kewa has an urgent food need, the whale may divert before reaching the requested region. Improving food availability, water security, biome health and pollution control makes the request more compatible with Kewa’s welfare, but it does not remove Kewa’s autonomy.
When the route matters, issue the request after completing the pre-travel checklist. Avoid starting a long chain of jobs that assumes the whale will remain beside a particular planet. Build a supply plan with two layers: the local production that operates while Kewa is present and a reserve or substitute plan that covers the period when the whale is elsewhere.
What should I stockpile before Kewa leaves?
Stockpile the inputs that keep essential services running, not every material in equal quantities. Food and water are the first safeguards because a shortage can worsen Kewa’s condition and force another change of course. Energy matters because low energy can make Peeps sick at shift change, and sickness removes them from work.
Next, protect the chains that are difficult to restart. Keep enough basic inputs for food, water, energy and pollution cleanup to cover the time during which a nearby resource is unavailable. If a production building depends on a material gathered only from the current interstellar neighborhood, identify a substitute or pause that chain before the stockpile reaches zero.
Use a simple reserve test:
- Trend: Is the stock increasing, stable or falling at current consumption?
- Coverage: How long can essential jobs continue if gathering from the current region stops?
- Capacity: Can storage accept the next production cycle, or will overflow waste the output?
- Recovery: After the detour, can you restart production without waiting for a completely new chain?
There is no published exact hunger threshold or required reserve duration. Do not copy a fixed number from another colony or assume that a particular warehouse count guarantees safety. Recalculate when population, job assignments or industrial load changes.

How do housing and the 16-tile work radius affect stability?
Housing placement is a travel-contingency measure. Peeps only take jobs within 16 tiles of home, so a settlement that places housing far from food, water, energy or cleanup jobs can lose labor even when the buildings themselves are intact.
Build housing before opening a new cluster of jobs, and keep a labor core around essential production. When adding an outlying industry, check whether existing homes are within the 16-tile reach; if not, add nearby housing rather than assuming workers will commute from the original neighborhood. A compact core also makes it easier to maintain forests, waterways and pollution controls around the places where most Peeps live.
Labor shocks compound during a detour. Low energy may cause sickness at shift change, sick Peeps stay home, and widespread unhappiness can trigger strikes that halt part of production. The result is a feedback loop: fewer workers reduce food or energy output, shortages lower wellbeing, and lower wellbeing removes still more labor. Keep energy and basic needs positive before travel, and avoid scheduling a large expansion that depends on every available worker.
If a detour has already started, staff the jobs that preserve survival first. Temporarily leave optional construction or low-priority production idle rather than allowing food, water, energy or cleanup to lose their workers.
How do I protect the biome while Kewa is travelling?
Biome health is operational infrastructure. The official Biome guidance defines overall health through fertile and flooded tiles plus forests that contribute to the atmosphere. Kewa’s health and happiness increase as the total amount of fertile ground increases, so sacrificing living surface for short-term industrial capacity can make future travel less reliable.
Terraforming is the main repair and expansion tool. Raising or lowering ground, channeling waterways, reforesting and fertilizing improve habitability, Kewa’s health and happiness, and the Peeps’ ability to expand. Use those tools deliberately rather than treating them as a final beautification pass.
Use water and fertility as a connected system
- Channel water into dry areas. A flooded or watered area can support more fertile ground and makes later forest planting practical.
- Compost or fertilize bare ground. Fertile tiles contribute directly to biome health; do not let industrial expansion consume every productive tile.
- Preserve existing fertile and flooded tiles. Keep a living surface near the settlement instead of replacing it wholesale with buildings.
- Repair damage after pollution events. Cleanup and fertility restoration should be scheduled together when contamination has reduced the usable biome.
Plan forests around the atmosphere radius
A single forest generates atmosphere four tiles away. Use that radius when extending the settlement: place watered forests so their coverage supports the inhabited and expanding areas rather than scattering trees where they affect no useful ground. The four-tile figure is a coverage range, not a promise that one forest will solve every atmospheric or biome problem; overlapping coverage and the total amount of fertile, flooded and forested ground still matter.

When Kewa changes course, avoid clearing forests or draining fertile ground to fund emergency construction unless the alternative is an immediate survival failure. A short-term gain can reduce Kewa’s wellbeing and make the next detour more likely to interrupt your plans.

How should I control pollution and industrial by-products?
Heavy industry can upset Kewa, and the settlement must clean up its by-products and pollution to keep the host happy. Treat waste handling as part of the production chain: if an industry has no storage or downstream use for its by-products, its apparent output is creating a future stability problem.
Before travel, provide storage for unavoidable by-products and make sure cleanup jobs have workers within the 16-tile housing radius. Keep heavy industry away from the most valuable living surface when the layout allows it, and clean polluted tiles before expanding housing or forests into the affected area.
During a detour, pause industrial expansion that increases pollution without supporting food, water, energy or recovery. A smaller, cleaner production footprint is usually safer than a larger one that consumes fertile ground, sickens the workforce or reduces Kewa’s happiness while you are waiting for a return route.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat should I do immediately when Kewa changes course?
Respond as if a major input region has become temporarily unavailable. Do not spend the first minutes trying to force the old plan; stabilize the colony and determine whether the detour is food-driven.
- Pause discretionary construction. Leave survival, storage, housing, repair and cleanup priorities active, but stop projects that consume scarce inputs or workers.
- Read the stock and trend panels. Identify which resource will run out first and whether the problem is a shortage, a full storage chain, a labor gap or pollution.
- Switch to reserves and substitutes. Feed essential jobs from stored inputs. If a recipe or chain has an alternative source, use it instead of waiting for the original planet.
- Protect the labor core. Keep workers on food, water, energy and cleanup. Add housing near a critical workplace if the 16-tile rule is leaving it unstaffed.
- Check Kewa’s needs and biome condition. Improve fertile ground, flooding, forests and pollution where practical. If hunger appears to be driving the route, prioritize food security over a destination request.
- Do not assume an immediate return. Kewa may continue to a food region or another need-driven destination. Plan for the detour to last long enough that your reserve and substitute chain must carry the colony.
- Record the blocked resource. Note the planet or neighborhood that supplied it, what substitute you used and which stockpile ran low. This makes the eventual return a deliberate logistics step rather than a guess.
The objective is not to freeze the entire colony. It is to stop optional spending while preserving the systems that keep Peeps alive, employed and able to repair the biome.
Should I stay and stabilize or follow the resource?
Choose between two valid responses: stay on the current route and operate from reserves, or follow the resource by returning to the relevant interstellar neighborhood when Kewa’s needs permit. Compare the options against reserve depth, biome condition, labor coverage and the opportunity cost of delaying growth.
| Decision factor | Stay and stabilize | Follow the resource |
|---|---|---|
| Food, water and input reserves | Works when stocks are positive and storage can support the essential chains while gathering is paused. | Preferable when a critical input has no substitute and reserves are falling toward zero. |
| Biome condition | Best when fertile and flooded tiles, forests and pollution controls need repair before another move. | Riskier if travel would postpone cleanup or remove workers from a damaged living surface. |
| Labor coverage | Safer when housing already covers essential jobs within 16 tiles. | Requires enough workers and energy to reopen gathering and transport jobs after arrival. |
| Opportunity cost | Preserves settlement growth and lets you convert reserves into infrastructure. | Delays expansion but restores access to a resource region that the colony cannot replace locally. |
Stay when the colony can maintain positive food, water and energy trends and when the current biome needs attention. Follow the resource when the blocked material is essential, no substitute exists, and waiting would consume the reserve needed for recovery. In either case, keep the Strange Transmitter request subordinate to Kewa’s condition: a request cannot override a need-driven detour.
How do I get back to a planet after the whale moves away?
First restore the conditions that make a return practical: food and water security, enough energy, staffed essential jobs and a healthy enough biome to support travel. Then identify the resource’s interstellar neighborhood and issue a destination request with the Strange Transmitter when Kewa’s current needs allow it.

Plan the return as a restart, not a teleport. Reserve the inputs required to operate the gathering chain, ensure housing is within 16 tiles of the jobs you will reopen, and leave storage room for the incoming materials. If Kewa detours again, fall back to the substitute plan instead of letting the colony consume its entire emergency reserve while waiting.
Resource regions are not permanently available. If Kewa leaves a planet that supplies a needed resource, the Peeps may have to return to that neighborhood before gathering it again. That makes local substitutes, stockpiles and a clean, fertile biome valuable even after the original route becomes available.

What is a repeatable operating routine?
Use the following loop whenever you plan travel or recover from a detour:
- Observe: review food, water, energy, sickness, worker availability, storage and pollution.
- Protect: secure housing within 16 tiles of essential jobs and preserve fertile, flooded and forested ground.
- Reserve: store the inputs needed to keep survival and cleanup chains running if gathering stops.
- Request: use the Strange Transmitter only after the colony can tolerate a route change.
- Adapt: when Kewa detours, pause optional work and switch to reserves or substitutes.
- Recover: repair the biome and pollution load, rebuild the supply chain, then return to the resource neighborhood when Kewa’s needs and route permit.
This routine accepts Kewa’s autonomy instead of fighting it. A healthy biome, a nearby labor force and a reserve-backed supply chain turn a whale-driven change of course from a colony-ending emergency into a manageable logistics interruption.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I force Kewa to stay at the destination I choose?
No. The Strange Transmitter lets you ask for a destination, but Kewa can divert when its own needs take priority. Treat every request as conditional and keep a reserve-backed plan for the route you actually get.
Is there a published food level that triggers a Kewa detour?
No authoritative source in the available documentation gives an exact hunger threshold or detour frequency. Monitor food trends and Kewa’s condition instead of relying on an unverified fixed number.
Do forests have to touch my settlement to help the atmosphere?
A forest generates atmosphere four tiles away, so coverage matters more than simple adjacency. Place watered forests so their radius reaches inhabited or planned areas, while also maintaining enough total fertile and flooded ground.
Why are my workers idle even though the buildings are close on the map?
Peeps only take jobs within 16 tiles of their homes. Measure the distance from housing to the workplace and check for sickness or strikes before adding more production buildings.
Should I chase a resource immediately after Kewa leaves?
Only if the material is essential, has no substitute and your reserves cannot cover the interruption. Otherwise, stabilizing the biome and supply chain first can preserve more growth than an immediate return trip.
