NVIDIA’s 2026 disclosures describe guarantees, financing, leases and AI-cloud capacity commitments; CoreWeave’s 2025 filing shows an infrastructure provider borrowing against equipment and customer contracts. These arrangements make financing risk worth examining—not a collapse a foregone conclusion.
What does “lubricating the AI financing wheel” mean?
Deep Value Investing’s Seeking Alpha argument uses the phrase for arrangements that can help customers fund compute purchases. Its summary names credit backstops, lease guarantees, strategic equity investments and direct loans. Those are distinct tools: a loan provides money to a borrower; a guarantee may leave the guarantor responsible if another party fails to pay; an equity investment buys an ownership interest; and a capacity commitment is an agreement to purchase or provide services in the future.
The metaphor suggests an interdependent chain: chipmakers supply equipment or financial support, AI-cloud providers build data centers, lenders extend credit, and customer contracts are expected to generate cash to service that debt. A problem at one link could affect the others. That is a risk framework, not proof that every deal is circular financing or that demand is artificial.
What NVIDIA disclosed about its commitments
NVIDIA Corporation’s 2026 Form 10-Q says it enters commercial arrangements to support customers’ and partners’ AI infrastructure buildout, including financial guarantees and other credit support, financing arrangements, and data-center leases. Its commitments table, as of July 26, 2026, reported $56 billion in total future commitments, including $36 billion in AI-cloud agreements. These are disclosed future commitments—not amounts described as fully funded, spent or recognized as revenue.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The filing also describes risks: counterparties might not obtain capital, meet commitments or complete projects, and weaker demand or pricing could reduce returns on capacity commitments. Those warnings identify possible exposure; they do not establish that counterparties have defaulted or that NVIDIA will incur losses.
Guarantees are not the same as paying for an entire project
For the specified SB Energy arrangement, NVIDIA says its guarantees are limited to defined portions of lease and power payments. The filing does not describe NVIDIA as guaranteeing the entire site cost or every tenant obligation. It also sets out termination conditions and potential exposure if OpenAI fails to meet obligations. The relevant question is therefore what the guarantee covers, for how long, and under which conditions—not simply the headline size someone assigns to a project.

How CoreWeave’s financing model works
CoreWeave’s filings describe infrastructure development as financed primarily through asset-level debt supported by take-or-pay customer contracts, with corporate equity and debt as supplements. A take-or-pay contract generally requires a customer to pay for contracted capacity even if it does not use all of it, subject to the contract’s terms. Such a commitment can support a lender’s willingness to finance infrastructure, but it does not remove customer-credit risk.
The DDTL 2.0 facility: a dated example, not a current balance
In its quarterly filing for the quarter ended June 30, 2025, CoreWeave described a DDTL 2.0 facility that could provide up to $7.6 billion, subject to collateral requirements. As of that date, it reported $5.0 billion borrowed and $2.6 billion remaining available. Loan availability depended in part on the depreciated purchase price of GPU servers and other infrastructure, as well as the credit quality of the related customer contract. Those figures are historical and should not be read as CoreWeave’s current borrowing or availability in 2026.

Where financing risk could emerge
The filings point to several ways the chain could come under strain. These are conditional risks, not reports that the events have happened:
- A customer cannot pay. A cloud provider may depend on a small number of customers and on contracts to support borrowing. If a key customer cannot meet obligations, the provider’s cash flow and its lenders’ expectations could weaken.
- Debt cannot be refinanced. If an infrastructure company needs new borrowing but lenders judge its contracts or collateral less favorably, it may have less capacity to expand or meet existing obligations.
- Equipment collateral loses value. A lender relying on GPUs and related infrastructure as collateral may face a shortfall if the equipment’s value falls faster than the debt. The reviewed filings do not establish how long GPUs retain resale value or what resale proceeds lenders would recover.
- Capacity demand or pricing falls. Lower demand or prices could reduce returns on capacity commitments, a risk NVIDIA itself identifies in its filing. The effect depends on the specific contract, costs and counterparties.
- A guarantee is called or a project stalls. A guarantor could face payment exposure under the terms of its guarantee, while an unfinished data center could delay the expected revenue from its capacity. The scope, duration, termination rights and conditions of each agreement matter.
How to assess a specific financing arrangement
A large commitment figure alone does not show who ultimately bears the loss or how likely a loss is. For any company or deal, look for these details in filings and contract disclosures:

- Identify the instrument. Separate direct loans from guarantees, leases, equity investments and future capacity purchases; they create different obligations and risks.
- Trace the repayment source. Determine whether debt depends on one customer, several customers, take-or-pay contracts, or other cash flows—and check the customers’ credit quality and concentration.
- Inspect the collateral terms. Find out whether loans are secured by GPUs, other infrastructure or contracted cash flows, and how collateral values are calculated and depreciated.
- Separate commitments from funded amounts. A facility ceiling or future commitment is not the same as cash already drawn or spent. Check the reporting date and any conditions on availability.
- Read the protections and exit terms. Review guarantee caps, termination rights, timing, escrow arrangements and the circumstances that could trigger a payment.
What the evidence does—and does not—say
The Seeking Alpha author invokes The Big Short and subprime mortgage-backed securities as an analogy. An analogy can prompt useful questions about hidden exposure and interconnected obligations, but the filings described here do not establish that AI financing is equivalent to the mortgage crisis. Nor do they establish a universal circular-financing pattern across chipmakers, a typical rate of defaults, or an industry-wide GPU resale life.
The strongest grounded conclusion is narrower: NVIDIA has disclosed several forms of customer and partner support, while CoreWeave has described debt supported by infrastructure and customer contracts. Those structures create exposures investors can investigate. Whether they amount to a broader financing problem depends on deal-level terms, customer performance, collateral values and future demand—not on the metaphor alone.
