Start by choosing the instructions for your device: Xbox console and Windows PC use different controls for game updates and install locations. On console, check Updates & downloads and your home Xbox setting if you expect games to install automatically. On PC, choose an install location in the Xbox app and check the drive’s free space before downloading.
Which device are you using?
- Xbox console: Use the console’s update controls and check the home Xbox setting if you want games to install automatically.
- Windows PC: Choose an install location in the Xbox app, then manage available space on that drive.
The two platforms do not share one universal Game Pass download or update setting. Follow the relevant section below.
How do I manage downloads and updates on an Xbox console?
Open the console’s Updates & downloads area to find controls for keeping games and apps current. Microsoft Support search results associate automatic game installation with using the console designated as your home Xbox. If you expect automatic installation, check that home Xbox setting as well as the update controls.
Menu wording and available controls can vary as the console interface changes. Confirm the labels on your own console rather than relying on an older screenshot or assuming every Xbox generation presents identical options. How do I choose where Xbox app games install on Windows?
Xbox Wire announced install-location selection and game management features for the Xbox app for Windows on November 18, 2021. The announcement described managing games, including moving or repairing them, but it does not establish that every current app version uses the same labels or offers identical options.
- Open the Xbox app and inspect its current settings for the game installation location.
- Choose an available drive with enough free space for the game you want to install.
- For an existing game, check the app’s management options before moving or repairing it; the available actions can depend on the current app version.

Is an external drive a reliable place to install PC games?
An external drive can provide additional capacity, but it is not a guaranteed solution for every game or setup. Xbox Wire’s announcement warned that users may encounter problems launching games installed on an external drive. Check the current Xbox app and Windows compatibility for your setup before moving a library or buying a drive, and keep enough free space on the drive you choose.
Does Microsoft Store automatic updating update every Game Pass game?
No. Microsoft Store’s automatic-update setting applies to Store apps; it should not be treated as a universal switch that controls every installed Game Pass game. Microsoft’s instructions for that Windows setting are at Turn on automatic app updates. Xbox app updates and updates for installed games are separate concerns, so check the relevant Xbox app or console controls for game behavior.

Can I play without downloading a game?
Where supported, Xbox Cloud Gaming lets players stream a game instead of downloading and installing it, which can help when device storage is limited. Availability depends on the title, device, region, and access or plan requirements; do not assume every Game Pass game can be streamed. Microsoft describes PC gaming and cloud play as options in More Ways to Play: PC Gaming on Windows 11.

What should I check before changing storage settings?
- Identify whether you are changing settings on an Xbox console or a Windows PC; their interfaces and storage rules differ.
- Check free space on the intended install drive before starting a large download.
- On console, confirm the update controls and home Xbox setting if automatic installation is important to you.
- On PC, verify the current Xbox app’s location and management options before moving an installed game.
- Do not assume an external drive will launch every PC game successfully, or that one console storage device works with every Xbox generation and game. Check current official compatibility guidance for your specific console before purchasing or relying on an expansion device.
- If storage is the main constraint, check whether the particular title and your device and region support cloud play before choosing streaming over installation.
