Marvel’s Wolverine launched worldwide on September 15, 2026, exclusively for PlayStation 5, so there is no need to wait for its release. If you want more mutant-led play alongside or after it, X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse is the closest fit for controlling an X-Men team. For a broader Marvel roster that includes Wolverine, choose Marvel: Ultimate Alliance or its sequel.

Best direct X-Men team game: X-Men Legends II
X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse most directly answers “what X-Men game should I play?” Activision described an action RPG in which X-Men and Brotherhood characters unite against Apocalypse. Nintendo’s listing says 16 characters are playable from the outset, with further characters unlocked as the story unfolds, and describes four-player co-op. That combination makes it the clearest choice here if you want to assemble and play as a mutant team rather than follow Wolverine alone.

Best games where you can play as Wolverine
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance
If the priority is games where you can play as Wolverine, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance offers a larger Marvel cast rather than an X-Men-only focus. It lists Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S; check the store in your region for current availability and terms.

Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 is the follow-up to consider if you want a broader roster and team customization. Xbox describes more than 24 playable characters, local or online co-op for up to four, and a story tied to the Civil War-era split into sides. Its Xbox listing names Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. The cited listing establishes those details, but not a character-by-character roster, so check the current game listing if a specific hero is essential.
Why the waiting premise has changed
Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that Marvel’s Wolverine launched worldwide on September 15, 2026, exclusively on PlayStation 5. PlayStation describes an original story in which Wolverine returns to the mutant task force Team X after leaving it three years earlier. These older ensemble games are alternatives for more team-based Marvel play, not sequels or prerequisites for understanding that story.

How to choose and find a copy
- Want an X-Men team? Start with X-Men Legends II; its official descriptions center the X-Men and Brotherhood and identify it as an action RPG.
- Want Wolverine alongside other Marvel heroes? Consider either Ultimate Alliance game; the first explicitly lists Wolverine, while the sequel’s listing highlights a larger roster and team customization.
- Need co-op? The official descriptions establish four-player co-op for X-Men Legends II and the first Ultimate Alliance; Xbox describes up-to-four local or online co-op for Ultimate Alliance 2.
- Check your platform first. The X-Men Legends II releases named by Activision are legacy editions, and present-day compatibility is not established here. Xbox’s listings name current Xbox console families for the two Ultimate Alliance games, but availability may differ by region.
For older physical games, verify the exact platform and disc or copy condition with the seller. Do not assume a historical release means a current digital listing or a compatible version for your device.
