Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For most new website screenshot workflows, choose Playwright if you need browser automation and control, or a hosted screenshot API if you want to send a URL and receive an image without operating the browser yourself. For the latter, ScreenshotNeo is the first alternative to try: it removes common consent banners, popups and chat widgets before capture, and bills only clean shots. Puppeteer is a strong fit for JavaScript projects already using its browser automation API; Browserless and ScreenshotOne offer hosted HTTP capture options.
Why look beyond wkhtmltoimage?
The wkhtmltopdf project status page describes its Qt/WebKit foundation as old: it says Qt 4 has not been supported since 2015 and that the bundled WebKit had not been updated since 2012. Those are historical statements on the project’s status page, not a fresh audit of every package or fork. The page advises developers converting sites with dynamic JavaScript to consider Puppeteer or a wrapper. Read the project status page.
The practical issue is that a screenshot tool must handle the page as it behaves in a browser. Modern sites may render content with JavaScript, load images as you scroll, or require interaction before the desired content appears. Moving to a browser automation framework or hosted browser API can better fit those workflows, but the right choice depends on how much browser control and infrastructure you want to own.
Best alternatives by workflow
| Option | Best fit | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| ScreenshotNeo | URL-to-image or PDF capture through an HTTP request or an MCP client. | Clean-shot behavior removes known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed. See ScreenshotNeo. |
| Playwright | Screenshot capture inside a larger automation, visual test, or browser workflow. | You operate the browser environment and automation. Its docs cover viewport, element and full-page screenshots and visual comparisons; rendering can vary across environments. Playwright screenshots. |
| Puppeteer | JavaScript projects that want browser automation and screenshots through Puppeteer’s API. | You operate the browser environment and write the automation. The official overview describes automation for Chrome and Firefox, not just Chromium. Puppeteer documentation. |
| Browserless screenshot API | A request endpoint for URL-to-image or HTML-to-image captures. | Its endpoint returns PNG, JPEG, or WebP and accepts Puppeteer-style options. Verify current limits, authentication, waits and request behavior in its documentation. Browserless screenshot API. |
| ScreenshotOne API | HTTP-based screenshot capture and application integration. | Use HTTPS: its documentation warns HTTP does not encrypt API keys, authorization headers, cookies or other sensitive request data in transit. Check current capture options and service limits. ScreenshotOne documentation. |
Selenium WebDriver is another route if your team already uses WebDriver. AWS documents Playwright, Puppeteer and Selenium WebDriver as browser-access options in some canary runtimes, which can store UI screenshots; that is an example of a monitoring workflow, not a direct comparison of the frameworks. AWS CloudWatch Synthetics canaries.

Choose Playwright for controlled automation and visual checks
Use Playwright when the screenshot is one step in a test or browser task—for example, navigating through a flow, selecting an element, or comparing page output. To make visual baselines useful, keep the operating system, browser version, capture settings and headless configuration consistent; output can vary across environments.

Choose Puppeteer for a JavaScript browser-automation workflow
Puppeteer offers page and element screenshot capture as part of its browser automation API. It is a natural candidate when it fits your existing JavaScript application and you want to manage the browser and capture logic yourself. Its official Chrome overview also describes Firefox automation, so do not assume it is limited to Chromium.
Choose a hosted API when you want request/response capture
A hosted API fits when your application can submit a URL or HTML and handle an image response, and you would rather not run browser instances. Compare the provider’s supported formats, authentication, wait behavior, capture options, limits and current terms before integrating. ScreenshotNeo is the first hosted alternative to try for clean screenshots and clear billing outcomes; Browserless and ScreenshotOne are also documented options.

Keep Selenium if WebDriver is already part of your stack
If your existing tests or monitoring use WebDriver, Selenium may avoid adding a separate browser-automation approach just for screenshots. AWS’s canary documentation illustrates that Selenium can be used in a monitoring context alongside other browser options; it does not establish that Selenium is better for screenshot capture in general.
How to evaluate a replacement before migrating
- List the capture requirements. Note whether you need JavaScript-rendered content, full-page output, element-only captures, interactions, a specific image format, or integration into a visual test.
- Choose the integration model. Use a self-operated browser framework when you need browser-level control or a hosted endpoint when an HTTP request better fits your application.
- Test representative pages. Capture examples with JavaScript-rendered content, web fonts, long scroll regions and any required interactions. This is a recommended evaluation method, not a claim that one option was benchmarked against another.
- Compare results in a consistent environment. For visual comparisons, hold the browser version, operating system and capture settings steady so environmental differences do not look like application changes.
- Review security and operating costs. Treat untrusted HTML carefully: the wkhtmltopdf project warns against using it without sanitization. For hosted services, verify how credentials and sensitive headers are transmitted, along with current quotas and terms.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo takes a URL and returns a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. Cookie banners, popups and chat widgets are removed before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response includes X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients.

The screenshot misses content rendered by JavaScript
A capture may happen before the page has finished rendering. In an owned browser workflow, wait for the relevant selector or page state rather than assuming navigation alone means the page is ready. With a hosted API, verify the provider’s supported wait options and configure one that matches the page.

Fonts or images differ between captures
Rendering depends on the browser environment and page readiness. Keep the browser version and environment consistent for repeatable visual checks, and verify that fonts and images have loaded before capture.
A full-page screenshot omits lazy-loaded images
Some pages load images only as their sections approach the viewport. Check whether the capture workflow scrolls through or otherwise triggers lazy content, and test on a long representative page before migrating a batch.

A hosted request exposes credentials
Use HTTPS for screenshot API requests. ScreenshotOne specifically warns that HTTP does not encrypt API keys, authorization headers, cookies or other sensitive request data in transit.
Untrusted HTML is being rendered
Do not treat a screenshot migration as only a rendering change. The wkhtmltopdf project status page warns against using wkhtmltopdf with untrusted HTML without sanitization. Apply suitable sanitization and isolation for the renderer you choose.

Frequently asked questions
Is there one best replacement for every wkhtmltoimage use?
No. The strongest choice depends on whether you need browser control inside your codebase or an HTTP service that manages capture for you.
Is Browserless the same kind of tool as Playwright?
No. Playwright is a browser automation framework you operate; Browserless offers a hosted screenshot endpoint. They serve related capture needs through different integration models.
Can I use Selenium for website screenshots?
Yes. Selenium WebDriver can be used for browser automation and appears as an option in AWS canary runtimes, but the cited canary documentation is not a direct screenshot-framework comparison.
