For quick searches by filename on local NTFS drives, Everything is the strongest alternative in this comparison. If you need to search words inside documents, start with Windows Search and make sure the right folders and file contents are indexed. PowerToys Run is best understood as a keyboard-friendly way to reach apps, settings, and files already indexed by Windows—not as a separate search engine.
Which Windows search alternative should you use?

“Faster” depends on what you are searching for. A tool optimized for filenames is not necessarily the best choice for finding a phrase inside a document, and a launcher that uses Windows Search does not expand the locations Windows has indexed.
Check Windows Search before replacing it
Windows Search creates an index of files and their properties so it can return results without checking every file from scratch. Microsoft says Classic mode indexes Documents, Pictures, Music, and Desktop by default, and you can add other locations. Enhanced mode indexes the entire PC, including user folders and files; Microsoft cautions that it may use more system resources.
Index coverage and indexed data are separate settings. By default, Windows indexes file names and full paths. For configured file types, it can also index text content; the file-type options let you choose properties only or properties and content. Microsoft says an initial index build can take up to a couple of hours, then updates in the background as files change. Its rule of thumb is that the index takes up less than 10 percent of the size of the indexed files, though the proportion can be higher with many tiny files or code.

- Open Windows Settings and go to Privacy & security > Searching Windows.
- Choose Classic or Enhanced under Find my files. Use Classic if its default locations and any locations you add cover your files; choose Enhanced when you want indexing across the PC and accept its possible resource cost.
- Use the included and excluded locations controls to adjust coverage. Add folders containing files you need to find, or exclude locations you do not want indexed.
- To include document text, open Advanced indexing options, then check the file type under File Types. Select the option for properties and file contents when you need full-text results; properties-only indexing will not index the document’s words.
- Allow the first index build to finish, particularly after changing coverage or content settings. New or changed files are then incorporated in the background.
Microsoft gives an illustrative example in which a fully built index finds music matching “Beethoven” in a fraction of a second, versus minutes without an index. That example explains why indexing helps, but it is not a universal timing for every PC, query, or file collection.
Everything: best for filename searches
Everything by voidtools focuses on file and folder names. Its FAQ says the app initially displays files and folders, then narrows the list as you type a filter. Voidtools writes: “Everything only indexes file and folder names and generally takes a few seconds to build its database.”

That focus makes Everything a good fit when you know all or part of a filename but Windows Search is missing files, has not finished indexing, or is not the workflow you want. It is not a replacement for indexed full-text search: Everything can search file contents, but voidtools says those contents are not indexed, so content searches are slow.
Voidtools’ undated FAQ, accessed in 2026, gives vendor-reported examples—not independent benchmark results—of indexing about 250,000 files in about five seconds on a fresh Windows 11 installation and one million files in about one minute. For those examples, it reports about 35 MB of RAM and under 14 MB of disk space for 250,000 files, and about 100 MB of RAM and 45 MB of disk space for one million files. Actual performance and resource use can vary with the system and file collection.

The vendor also lists offline operation, real-time updating, no telemetry, and no user data collection among the product’s features. For NTFS indexing, its FAQ says Everything must run with its service or be launched as an administrator. Consider that setup requirement if you are choosing it for a managed work PC or a standard user account.
PowerToys Run: a launcher, not a new file index
PowerToys Run is a keyboard-driven launcher in Microsoft’s PowerToys suite. Its Windows Search plugin returns files and folders indexed by the Windows Search Index service. Microsoft points to Enhanced indexing and location exclusions in Windows settings, so PowerToys Run’s file coverage follows Windows Search rather than creating an independent index of additional drives or folders.

Choose it when you want to reach indexed files alongside apps and settings from a keyboard-first interface. If a file is missing because its folder is outside Windows Search’s indexed locations, changing launchers alone will not resolve that coverage gap.

On July 13, 2026, Windows Insider authors Jeff Petty (Windows) and Anderson Aiziro (Bing Search) announced Search Box improvements, including better surfacing of local files, support for two-character file searches, and controls for web and Microsoft Store suggestions. The announcement said: “These improvements become available to Windows Insiders today in the Experimental channel.” That describes availability at announcement time, not a universal feature rollout; the authors said availability was gradual and the experience could vary by region. Check current Windows Insider release information before relying on those changes.

Choose by search target, not a speed ranking
- Known filename, local NTFS drive: Try Everything if you want a dedicated filename search and can meet its service or administrator requirement.
- Words in a document: Use Windows Search with the relevant folders indexed and content indexing enabled for the file types involved.
- Keyboard-first access: Use PowerToys Run if its integration is useful, while treating Windows Search settings as the source of its file coverage.
- Files scattered across user folders: Consider Enhanced mode before installing another search utility, with the trade-off that broader indexing may use more resources.
