For smoother PlayStation Portal Remote Play, connect the Portal to 5 GHz Wi-Fi, connect the PS5 to the router with Ethernet if practical, and reduce competing network traffic. If the PS5 must use Wi-Fi, Sony recommends putting both devices on the same Wi-Fi network. Sony recommends a connection of at least 15 Mbps for a better experience, but that speed alone does not guarantee smooth play.
Recommended Wi-Fi settings for PS Portal
Connect the Portal to 5 GHz Wi-Fi
Sony recommends a 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection for the Portal. It is a practical starting point, especially when the Portal is near the router, but 5 GHz is not guaranteed to perform better in every home: signal strength, obstructions, congestion, and the router all matter. Sony’s PS Portal setup guidance recommends 5 GHz.

Use Ethernet for the PS5 when possible
Sony recommends connecting the PS5 to the internet with a wired connection. Ethernet removes the console’s Wi-Fi link from the connection path. If wiring the PS5 is not practical and it uses Wi-Fi, Sony recommends connecting the PS5 and Portal to the same Wi-Fi network. Sony’s setup guidance covers both options.
Consider turning off band steering for the Portal
Some routers automatically switch a device between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz; this feature is commonly called band steering. Sony recommends disabling it for the Portal if possible. Router settings and labels vary, so there is no reliable universal menu path. If your router does not expose this control, use the available 5 GHz network instead.

Check both upload and download speeds
Sony’s general Remote Play troubleshooting guidance lists 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download as the minimum connection speed, and recommends at least 15 Mbps in both directions for best performance. Its Portal setup and troubleshooting pages also recommend at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. These are Sony recommendations, not a guarantee: latency, wireless signal quality, and network congestion can still affect play. See Sony’s Remote Play connection troubleshooting.
Change settings and test the connection
- Connect the Portal to 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Use your router’s or Wi-Fi system’s available network settings; exact labels depend on the equipment.
- Connect the PS5 to the router with Ethernet if you can. If the PS5 remains wireless, connect it and the Portal to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Disable band steering for the Portal if your router provides that option and the device is being moved between bands.
- Pause large downloads and other heavy network activity while playing, then test again. Sony lists competing downloads among the factors to address when Portal play is unstable.
- Improve the wireless signal path. Move the Portal and, if it is wireless, the PS5 closer to the router; reduce obstacles between the devices and the access point.
- Check Portal network status while playing. On software versions that include it, open Quick Menu > Troubleshoot > Show Network Status. Sony lists this diagnostic in its PS Portal system software information.
Troubleshoot by symptom
The Portal will not join Wi-Fi
- Check whether another device can connect to the same Wi-Fi network. If it cannot, investigate the router or internet connection first.
- On the Portal, open Settings > Network and review its internet connection setup.
- If the issue continues, try another network to help determine whether the problem is specific to the original network. Sony’s Wi-Fi error troubleshooting covers these checks.
The Portal connects, but play stutters or feels unstable
- Pause other devices’ large downloads and check upload and download speeds.
- Test the Portal on 5 GHz, improve its distance and line of sight to the router, and use Ethernet for the PS5 if possible.
- Check the Portal’s network-status screen during play, if available on its installed software version.
- Check Wi-Fi on another device before concluding that the Portal itself is the source of the issue. Sony’s Portal troubleshooting guidance recommends checking network conditions and device placement.
The Portal cannot reach the paired PS5
Confirm that Remote Play is enabled on the PS5, both devices use the same PlayStation account, and the console is online. To connect to a PS5 in Rest Mode, enable Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network in the console’s Rest Mode settings. Sony’s general Remote Play troubleshooting also identifies UDP port 8572 and warns that NAT Type 3 may prevent Remote Play. That is not an instruction to change router settings blindly; if the network appears to be the problem, consult your router or internet provider’s support.

What not to change without a specific reason
Sony’s guidance does not establish one universally best Wi-Fi channel, channel width, DNS server, QoS rule, or router menu sequence for Portal play. Start with the settings and checks above rather than applying router changes that may not suit your equipment or network.
Buying networking equipment is not a prerequisite. If you are considering a change after checking your existing setup, look at whether the router has an Ethernet port and can reach the room where you play on 5 GHz, and whether it lets you control band steering. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable is one way to try Sony’s wired-PS5 recommendation if your console currently uses Wi-Fi; it is an implementation option, not something every Portal owner needs.

Using the Portal on public Wi-Fi
Public Wi-Fi quality and access requirements are outside your control, and Portal support for public networks has changed through software updates. Sony’s software information page documents feature availability; check the current device software and the network’s sign-in requirements. Some public 5 GHz networks may not be supported in all regions, so do not assume that every public hotspot will work.
