For a smart TV that buffers because Wi-Fi is weak in one room, a range extender may be the simplest fix. For weak coverage across several rooms or a difficult home layout, a mesh system is usually the better fit. If you can run a cable, Ethernet can bypass the weak wireless path altogether. None is a guaranteed cure: the TV, broadband connection, interference, walls, and equipment placement all affect streaming.

Choose based on where the Wi-Fi problem is

Option Best fit Check before buying or installing
Wi-Fi range extender A single room with weak coverage, while keeping the existing router It needs a usable router signal where it is placed; verify compatibility, supported bands and security, and whether its operating mode affects roaming or device management. Google notes potential issues with third-party extenders and bridges on Nest Wifi and Google Wifi.
Mesh system Weak coverage across multiple rooms or a challenging layout Check node placement, wired backhaul and Ethernet ports, the compatibility of existing equipment, home construction, and broadband service. Google explains how mesh points provide multiple sources of connectivity around a home.
Ethernet The TV or a mesh node can be connected by cable Check for available ports and a practical cable route. Google documents Cat 5e or better for its wired setup. See Google’s Ethernet setup guidance.
Powerline adapters Wireless is obstructed and a long Ethernet cable run is impractical Both adapters need to be on the same electrical circuit, according to TP-Link’s powerline guidance.

When a Wi-Fi extender is the right choice

An extender receives the router’s wireless signal and rebroadcasts it. That can improve service in a single weak-signal area, but the extender cannot relay a useful connection if it is placed where the router signal is already poor.

Place it between the router and TV

TP-Link recommends positioning an extender about halfway between the router and the weak-signal area. Treat that as a starting point, not a guarantee: walls, interference, and the actual signal in your home can change the best location. TP-Link’s placement guide explains the midpoint approach.

Check compatibility before buying

Do not assume every third-party extender works cleanly with every router. Google warns that wireless bridges and extenders may not work as expected with Nest Wifi or Google Wifi. It identifies client mode, AP client mode, and ProxySTA as modes that are generally compatible, but incompatibility can still affect device lists, roaming, DNS, QoS, IPv6, or WPA3. Check the documentation for both your router and the exact extender model. Google’s compatibility guidance gives further detail.

When mesh makes more sense

A mesh system uses multiple connectivity points that operate as one network. That is a more natural approach when weak coverage affects several rooms or the home’s layout makes it hard for one router to reach the TV reliably. Placement still matters: mesh points need a workable connection to one another, and walls and interference can limit that connection.

Check whether your existing equipment can join the mesh

Mesh products are not necessarily interchangeable, even within one brand. Google says Nest Wifi Pro cannot mesh with earlier Nest Wifi or Google Wifi devices; a Pro network uses additional Pro routers as points. Google also recommends buying Wi-Fi devices for the country where they will be used because wireless regulations differ. Check Google’s device compatibility and regional guidance before combining or purchasing equipment.

Example: Nest Wifi Pro specifications

Google specifies Nest Wifi Pro as a tri-band Wi-Fi 6E mesh system using 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz. Its stated maximum combined throughput is up to 5.4 Gbps in the US and up to 4.2 Gbps outside the US. These are aggregate manufacturer figures across bands, not a promise of speed to one TV; actual results depend on the internet service, client devices, network conditions, local regulations, and environment. A TV or other client needs Wi-Fi 6E support to connect directly on 6 GHz. Google’s specifications and throughput qualifications explain the figures.

Google lists two 1-Gbps Ethernet ports per Nest Wifi Pro router and describes support for multiple simultaneous 4K streams when broadband and Wi-Fi coverage are sufficient. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent comparative test results. Port availability differs by model: Nest Wifi points have no Ethernet ports. See Google’s product specifications.

Use Ethernet when you can avoid the wireless bottleneck

If the TV has an Ethernet port and a cable route is practical, a wired connection can bypass the TV’s wireless link. You can also wire a mesh device where supported; some systems use Ethernet for backhaul between points. Confirm the ports and supported setup for the specific TV and mesh model rather than assuming all mesh points have Ethernet. Google’s setup instructions call for Cat 5e or better in its documented wired configuration. Read Google’s Ethernet instructions.

Consider powerline if cable and Wi-Fi are both difficult

Powerline adapters send network data over existing electrical wiring, offering another option when wireless coverage is obstructed and running Ethernet is impractical. Their performance depends on the home’s electrical wiring, and TP-Link says the adapters must share the same electrical circuit. Check the adapter maker’s setup guidance and your outlet arrangement before relying on this approach. TP-Link describes the circuit requirement.

How to decide and set up the connection

  1. Identify the coverage pattern. If the problem is isolated to one room, consider an extender; if multiple rooms are affected, compare mesh systems. If a cable can reach the TV or a suitable mesh node, evaluate Ethernet first.
  2. Check the TV and router. Confirm the TV’s Wi-Fi capabilities and Ethernet availability, the router’s bands and security settings, and compatibility with the proposed extender or mesh system. For a mesh expansion, confirm exact model and generation support.
  3. Place the equipment where the link can work. Start an extender about halfway from the router to the weak-signal room, then assess the connection at the TV. Place mesh points so they can connect reliably to the rest of the mesh rather than simply hiding one beside the TV.
  4. Test streaming on the TV. Judge the result using the actual TV and service, not a device’s headline aggregate Wi-Fi rating. If buffering remains, check whether the broadband connection, local interference, walls, or TV hardware is the limiting factor before adding more equipment.

Why a higher Wi-Fi number may not stop buffering

Wi-Fi labels and combined throughput ratings describe capabilities or aggregate rates, not the speed that a particular TV will receive. A TV may have different Wi-Fi hardware from a phone or laptop; the path through walls, placement, interference, the network, and the internet service all matter. Google explicitly qualifies its Nest Wifi Pro throughput figures by device, network, regulatory, environmental, and ISP conditions. More equipment or a higher advertised rating cannot guarantee that a streaming problem will disappear.
