The easiest way to play classic Nintendo games on Switch 2 is through Nintendo Switch Online: the standard membership includes curated NES, Super NES, and Game Boy libraries, while the Expansion Pack adds Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance, and Virtual Boy. Switch 2 owners with the Expansion Pack also get access to a curated GameCube Classics library. These are selected catalogs, not complete archives; check Nintendo’s current list for the game you want.
Which way to play classic games fits your needs?
| Route | What it offers | Requirements and limits | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch Online | Curated NES, Super NES, and Game Boy libraries | An active membership on the Nintendo Account accessing the games; download the relevant library app | Players focused on those systems who are comfortable with subscription access |
| Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack | Standard-tier libraries plus curated Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance, and Virtual Boy libraries | An active Expansion Pack membership; Virtual Boy requires an additional accessory and has regional limits | Players who want the expanded system selection, including N64 and GBA |
| GameCube Classics on Switch 2 | A curated GameCube library, including Nintendo examples such as The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, and SOULCALIBUR II | Switch 2 and an active Expansion Pack membership; the GameCube library is exclusive to Switch 2 | Players specifically seeking games included in the GameCube Classics library |
| Separate eShop releases or packaged collections | Some older games are sold individually or in publisher collections | Availability and Switch 2 compatibility vary by title; check its current store listing | Players looking for a specific game not included in Nintendo’s subscription libraries |
Nintendo does not publish a set schedule for future library additions. Catalogs and regional availability can change, so confirm a title is currently offered before choosing a route. Nintendo’s Nintendo Classics FAQ explains the service and its membership requirements.

What classic games are included with Nintendo Switch Online?
Standard membership: NES, Super NES, and Game Boy
The standard Nintendo Switch Online membership provides access to selected games from these three systems through Nintendo Classics library apps. A system name does not mean every game originally released for that console is available. Browse the current catalog to check whether a particular game is included.
Expansion Pack: N64, Genesis, GBA, and Virtual Boy
The Expansion Pack includes the standard-tier libraries and adds selected Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance, and Virtual Boy games. Virtual Boy access has an additional accessory requirement and regional limits; check Nintendo’s access guide for the applicable details.

How to access the Nintendo Classics libraries
- On the console, open the Nintendo Switch Online area and choose Nintendo Classics.
- Select the system library you want, then download its software through Nintendo eShop.
- Use the Nintendo Account that has the appropriate active membership to access the library. Nintendo says another account’s subscription on the same console does not satisfy this requirement.
These steps and account requirements are detailed in Nintendo’s guide to accessing the Nintendo Classics libraries.

Do you need Nintendo Switch Online to play classic games?
You need an active Nintendo Switch Online membership to access the games in the Nintendo Classics service, and some libraries require the Expansion Pack tier. Once downloaded, the games can be played offline, but Nintendo requires the membership to be verified online at least once every seven days. This applies even if the console itself has another account with a subscription; the account accessing the software needs the appropriate membership. Nintendo’s FAQ sets out the offline verification rule.
Can you play GameCube games on Switch 2?
Yes. The GameCube Classics library is available on Switch 2 with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. It is a selected collection, rather than access to the entire GameCube catalog. The GameCube controller is optional: Nintendo says it is not required to play these games and that the controller is compatible only with Switch 2. See Nintendo’s Expansion Pack page for its collection examples and controller details.

Yes, for compatible games, but special controllers are optional rather than a general requirement. Nintendo’s compatibility information lists the N64, NES, SNES, and SEGA Genesis controllers as wirelessly compatible with Switch 2 for compatible games. The GameCube controller works with GameCube Classics on Switch 2. Check compatibility for the specific game and controller before buying; Nintendo’s Switch and Switch 2 compatibility guide covers supported hardware.
Quick Recap
Can you buy classic games outside Nintendo Switch Online?
Some older games are available as separate eShop releases or in packaged collections, but the options and Switch 2 compatibility depend on the specific title. Nintendo says the games in the Nintendo Classics service are not planned for sale outside that service, and it has no current plans to restore a general Virtual Console banner. That does not rule out separate releases of classic titles; it means the subscription library games themselves should not be assumed to have individual versions. Check the eShop listing or the collection’s details for the exact game and system compatibility. Nintendo describes these distinctions in its Nintendo Classics FAQ.
