Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf you want an end-to-end encrypted cloud backup that can restore an iPhone, the closest option is usually not a replacement for iCloud: it is Apple’s Advanced Data Protection (ADP), which extends end-to-end encryption to iCloud Backup. For a copy outside iCloud, use an encrypted computer backup. Services such as Proton Drive and Cryptomator can protect selected photos or files, but their documented features do not establish a full-device restore.
Which option protects a full iPhone backup?
There are two routes in Apple’s documentation for backing up the device as a whole: iCloud Backup with ADP enabled, or an encrypted local backup made on a computer. These are different security and recovery arrangements. Standard iCloud protection is not the same as end-to-end encryption: Apple retains keys for many iCloud data categories under its standard protection model. ADP changes key custody for additional categories, including iCloud Backup. Apple’s iCloud data security overview explains the distinction.
| Option | What it protects | Can it restore an iPhone? | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| iCloud Backup with ADP | iCloud Backup and additional iCloud data categories are end-to-end encrypted. | Yes. It uses Apple’s iCloud Backup workflow. | You must prepare an account recovery method and meet Apple’s requirements and regional availability rules. |
| Encrypted computer backup | A local backup protected by a password you set. | Apple documents it as a backup for restoring after loss or replacement. | You need a compatible computer, must enable encryption, and must retain the password. |
| Proton Drive | Files and iPhone photos, according to Proton’s product description. | Not established by the consulted product documentation. | It is for selected files and photos, not a documented full-device image. |
| Cryptomator vault | Selected files stored through an encrypted vault workflow. | No full-device restore is documented in the consulted materials. | It requires more hands-on file management and does not protect files while they are accessible in an unlocked vault. |
Use iCloud Backup with Advanced Data Protection
ADP is the closest fit if you want the familiar iCloud restore workflow while preventing Apple from holding the keys to the protected backup data. Apple Platform Security says that, for users who enable ADP, “the iCloud Backup service key is protected with end-to-end encryption, and available only to users on their trusted devices.” See Apple Platform Security’s iCloud Backup security page.
Set up ADP before you need to restore
- Update your Apple devices and check the current ADP eligibility requirements and regional availability in Apple’s support overview.
- On an eligible trusted device, open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Advanced Data Protection and follow the prompts. The precise setup flow can depend on your software version and account configuration.
- Configure a recovery contact or recovery key when prompted. Apple says it cannot recover ADP-protected data without a user-controlled recovery method; set this up while you can still access your account and trusted devices.
- Confirm that iCloud Backup is enabled for the iPhone and that a recent backup completed. ADP encrypts the backup data; it does not remove the need to verify the backup itself.
ADP is optional and can be turned off; Apple says doing so returns the account to standard data protection. With ADP enabled, web access to iCloud data is disabled by default, although a trusted device can approve temporary access. Some sharing modes—including iWork collaboration, Shared Albums, and “anyone with the link” sharing—do not retain ADP protection. Those exceptions are described in Apple’s support overview.

- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Make an encrypted local backup on a computer
A computer backup is useful as a separate copy that does not depend on keeping an iCloud backup. Apple describes encrypted computer backups as restorable after device loss or replacement. They are password-encrypted local backups, not the same arrangement as a multi-device end-to-end encrypted cloud service: physical access to the computer, the computer’s security, where the password is stored, and any other copies all affect the practical protection.
Choose the Apple app for your computer
- Mac with macOS Catalina or later: use Finder.
- Windows PC: use Apple Devices.
- Older Mac or PC: use iTunes if that is the Apple backup app available on your system.
Enable encryption and verify the backup
- Connect the iPhone to the computer, unlock it, and approve the trust prompt if it appears.
- Open Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes, select the iPhone, and locate its backup controls.
- Select Encrypt local backup, create a password you can retain securely, and start the backup. Encryption is not enabled by default.
- After the backup finishes, check the app’s backup details or management screen to confirm that an encrypted backup exists and note its date.
Apple says an encrypted computer backup can include saved passwords, Wi-Fi settings, browsing history, Health data, and call history. It does not include biometric data or the device passcode. The backup password is required to use the encrypted backup; if you forget it, the old backup may be unusable. Follow Apple’s instructions for encrypted backups for current app-specific steps.

- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Use Proton Drive or Cryptomator for selected files and photos
These services are worth considering when the goal is to keep particular photos or documents in encrypted cloud storage—not when the goal is to restore an entire iPhone with its settings and app data.
Proton Drive for iPhone photos and files
Proton describes Drive as encrypted cloud storage and offers automatic iPhone photo backup. That makes it a candidate for an additional photo or file copy if you want storage separate from Apple’s backup workflow. The cited product information does not establish that Drive backs up iPhone settings and app data or can restore the complete device. See Proton Drive’s product description.

Cryptomator for an encrypted file vault
Cryptomator lets you work with selected files through an encrypted vault connected to cloud storage. It is a more manual approach than a device backup and is not documented as a full iPhone restore solution. Its protection also has limits once files are in use: Cryptomator warns that malware can read files while a vault is unlocked and that applications may create plaintext working copies. Review Cryptomator’s iOS documentation before relying on it for sensitive files.

Choose by restore needs and recovery plan
- Want a full-device cloud restore and Apple account recovery is manageable? Use iCloud Backup with ADP, after setting up a recovery contact or key.
- Want a separate full-device copy stored locally? Make an encrypted computer backup and keep its password independent of the computer.
- Want a cloud copy of selected photos or documents? Proton Drive or a Cryptomator vault may fit that narrower need; do not treat either as a full iPhone backup.
- Want resilience against account or hardware loss? Consider keeping more than one backup route. A backup is useful only if you can still reach it, decrypt it, and restore it.
