You can free iPhone storage without deleting your photo library: first check what is using space, then turn on Optimize iPhone Storage if iCloud has room for your originals. If you do not want to use iCloud Photos, transfer a copy of your photos and videos to a computer and verify it before removing anything from your iPhone. These options work differently: optimization keeps a synced library available in Photos, while a computer archive is a separate copy.
Check what is using your iPhone storage
Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage. The screen shows available device capacity, storage recommendations, and apps ranked by the space they use. Recommendations and labels can vary by iPhone and iOS version, so use the breakdown on your own device to decide where to start.
iPhone storage is the space inside the device. iCloud storage is separate space in your Apple Account. Buying more iCloud capacity does not by itself free space on the iPhone; photo optimization can reduce local photo storage after the library uploads and iOS manages the on-device copies.
Keep your photo library in Photos with Optimize iPhone Storage
If you use iCloud Photos and have enough iCloud capacity, Optimize iPhone Storage is the most direct way to reduce the space used by your photo library without deleting it. Full-resolution photos and videos are stored in iCloud, while space-saving copies stay on the iPhone as needed. You can continue to browse the synced library in Photos, but retrieving an original may require an internet connection.

- Open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos.
- Turn on Sync this iPhone if it is not already enabled.
- Choose Optimize iPhone Storage. On some newer iOS versions, the photo-storage control may appear under Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Photos; the exact layout and labels can vary.
- Keep the iPhone connected to Wi-Fi and power while the library uploads and syncs. The time required depends on library size and internet speed.
- Check available iCloud capacity and sync status in Settings. If iCloud is full, new photos may stop uploading and iCloud backups may also stop.
New iCloud accounts include 5 GB of free storage, according to Apple’s support guidance accessed in 2026. That allowance may not be enough for a photo library. Check your account’s available space before relying on optimization; the amount of local space reclaimed is not fixed and depends on your library, iCloud capacity, and sync state.
Choose between a synced library and a separate archive
iCloud Photos is a synchronization service, not a local-only removal switch or an independent backup. If you delete a photo or video while iCloud Photos is on, the deletion syncs to other devices using the same Apple Account. Do not delete items from Photos on the assumption that their iCloud copies will remain untouched.

If you would rather keep an independent copy, transfer photos and videos to a computer first. Open some of the transferred files and confirm the archive is complete before removing anything from the phone. Apple supports transferring photos and videos to a computer as a way to free device storage; the steps and any drive or adapter compatibility depend on your iPhone, computer, connectors, and software. Do not assume a particular external drive connects directly to every iPhone.

Reclaim space from apps and downloads
Offload apps when you want to keep their data
Offloading removes an app but keeps its documents and data. Deleting an app removes the app and its related data, so offload first when retaining that data matters.

- To enable automatic offloading, open Settings > Apps > App Store and turn on Offload Unused Apps. Menu labels can differ by iOS version.
- To choose an individual app, open Settings > General > iPhone Storage, select the app, and choose Offload App if available.
Remove offline video you have finished watching
Check downloads in Apple TV and other streaming apps. Removing a downloaded show or film can reclaim device space without affecting your photo library. Review the app’s download controls before removing an item.
Review Files and Messages
- Files: In the Files app, review large local documents and downloads. Delete only what you no longer need, or move a copy somewhere you control first.
- Messages: Review large attachments or conversations and choose specific items to remove. The storage effect and iCloud behavior depend on your settings and what you delete, so avoid mass deletion without checking the selection.
Let iOS manage temporary items
When storage is low, iOS may remove downloadable or temporary items. This can help, but it is not a substitute for checking iPhone Storage and addressing the category that is actually taking up space.

Confirm that space was reclaimed
After syncing, offloading apps, or removing downloads, return to Settings > General > iPhone Storage and check the available capacity and category breakdown again. Optimization may take time and does not guarantee a particular amount of free space. If the Photos category has not changed, check iCloud capacity and whether syncing has finished before changing or deleting photo content.
