For JavaScript-heavy pages, start with Chromium through Puppeteer or Playwright; for controlled, print-first documents, evaluate WeasyPrint or Prince. There is no universally best renderer: the right choice depends on how much JavaScript the page needs, how precisely you must control printed pages, and what your deployment can safely support. Test candidates against representative pages before committing.

Choose a renderer for the kind of HTML you have

First decide whether you are converting an existing live page or generating a document from a template. A live page may depend on JavaScript, authentication, and remote assets; a controlled template may need precise page breaks, page numbers, or running headers. Those are different rendering problems.

Approach Good starting point What to verify
Puppeteer Pages that need Chromium rendering or JavaScript execution. Print styles, page dimensions, margins, colors, fonts, loaded assets, and page breaks. Puppeteer Page.pdf() uses print CSS by default; its PDF guide documents font waiting behavior.
Playwright Projects already using Playwright browser automation. Browser/runtime choice, loaded fonts and assets, and output layout. Its Page API documents PDF generation, print media defaults, screen media emulation, dimensions, and margins.
WeasyPrint Python applications rendering controlled HTML and CSS documents. Actual CSS, font stack, assets, and required PDF features against its documented implementation limits. The API reference lists links, bookmarks, attachments, and forms.
Prince Print-oriented documents where paged-media features matter. Current licensing and deployment requirements, and whether its CSS support matches your templates. Prince documents HTML/XML-to-PDF conversion and page numbering and headers/footers in its user guide.
wkhtmltopdf Existing deployments being maintained or considered for migration. Current project status, maintenance and security exposure, and output differences. Its project status page warns about untrusted HTML and discusses alternatives for controlled reports and JavaScript-heavy sites; check the current status before relying on it.

These are starting points, not a head-to-head ranking. The documentation establishes features and cautions, not comparable speed, output quality, compatibility, or cost. Measure those against your own representative pages.

Convert a page with Puppeteer

Puppeteer is a practical starting point when the page needs Chromium and JavaScript. Its PDF method uses print CSS by default. If the intended result should look like the screen version, emulate screen media before generating the PDF; for a document, define print styles deliberately instead.

Install Puppeteer in a Node.js project, then save this as make-pdf.mjs and run it with node make-pdf.mjs. The example waits for navigation and then writes the PDF buffer:

import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';

const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
try {
  const page = await browser.newPage();
  await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle0' });
  const pdf = await page.pdf({
    format: 'A4',
    printBackground: true,
    margin: { top: '15mm', right: '15mm', bottom: '15mm', left: '15mm' }
  });
  await import('node:fs/promises').then(({ writeFile }) => writeFile('page.pdf', pdf));
} finally {
  await browser.close();
}

Replace the sample URL with a page you are authorized to access. For authenticated pages, configure the browser context with the appropriate credentials or cookies rather than embedding secrets in source code. The Page.pdf() API documents its PDF options. Puppeteer notes that PDF generation waits for fonts by default, but that does not establish that every image, stylesheet, or application-specific data request has finished; verify those separately.

Make print output intentional

Add @media print rules to the page when you control its styles. Set page size and margins using CSS or PDF options, and check how tables and long content break across pages. Browser printing may change colors; Puppeteer documents -webkit-print-color-adjust for controlling exact color adjustment. Test the result instead of assuming screen colors or backgrounds will carry over unchanged.

To request screen styling instead of the default print styling, emulate the screen media type before calling page.pdf(). That changes which media rules apply; it does not remove the need to check page dimensions, pagination, backgrounds, and assets in the generated PDF.

Use Playwright when it fits your browser workflow

Playwright also produces a PDF buffer through page.pdf(), with print media as the default. A minimal Node.js example using its Chromium browser is:

import { chromium } from 'playwright';
import { writeFile } from 'node:fs/promises';

const browser = await chromium.launch();
try {
  const page = await browser.newPage();
  await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
  const pdf = await page.pdf({
    format: 'A4',
    printBackground: true,
    margin: { top: '15mm', right: '15mm', bottom: '15mm', left: '15mm' }
  });
  await writeFile('page.pdf', pdf);
} finally {
  await browser.close();
}

Install Playwright and its browser runtime in the project before running the example. If you want screen rather than print media, use Playwright’s screen media emulation before PDF generation. Consult the Page API for the current PDF options and media-emulation methods available in your installed version. Verify the browser/runtime, fonts, assets, and layout using production-like pages.

Evaluate print-focused renderers for document templates

WeasyPrint

WeasyPrint is worth evaluating in Python applications that produce controlled HTML/CSS documents. Its API documents PDF hyperlinks, bookmarks, attachments, and forms, and also records limits in its HTML/CSS support. A basic conversion can look like this:

from weasyprint import HTML

HTML(string='''
<!doctype html>
<html>
  <head><meta charset="utf-8"><title>Report</title></head>
  <body><h1>Report</h1><p>Generated from HTML.</p></body>
</html>
''', base_url='.').write_pdf('report.pdf')

Set an appropriate base_url when the document references relative stylesheets, images, or fonts. Test your actual CSS and assets: support for one feature does not guarantee that every browser-oriented stylesheet renders as intended. Pin the version you deploy and review changes before upgrading. The project changelog records WeasyPrint 70.0 as a security update released on 2026-09-08; check the changelog and current advisories when selecting a version.

Prince

Prince is another candidate for print-oriented output. Its user guide describes converting HTML or XML to PDF through CSS and documents features including page numbering and page headers and footers. Compare those capabilities with your actual templates, then verify current licensing and deployment requirements directly with the vendor; those terms are not established here.

Build a representative conversion test

Before selecting a renderer, test more than a short, clean page. Use real content and the conditions your production conversion will encounter.

  1. Classify the input. Record whether it is a live site or a generated template, and identify JavaScript, authentication, external resources, custom fonts, and user-controlled HTML or CSS.
  2. Select a small candidate set. For browser-dependent pages, prototype Puppeteer or Playwright. For controlled print-first documents, prototype WeasyPrint or Prince. Treat wkhtmltopdf’s own warning about untrusted input as a reason to review its suitability carefully.
  3. Specify print behavior. Decide whether the PDF should follow print or screen styling. Define page size, margins, backgrounds, headers and footers, and page-break rules intentionally.
  4. Check readiness. Confirm that fonts, images, stylesheets, and page data have loaded before capture. A navigation event alone may not represent readiness for every application.
  5. Inspect several outputs. Include short and long content, tables, images, long URLs, repeated elements, links, selectable text, and metadata. Check page breaks and any required PDF features.
  6. Retest after upgrades. Pin versions and run visual regression checks when changing the renderer, browser, fonts, or templates.

Keep a small set of representative input pages and review their PDFs after changes. This makes renderer selection and upgrades an observable engineering decision rather than an assumption based on a feature list.

Secure the rendering boundary

HTML-to-PDF conversion is a security-sensitive operation when markup, styles, or referenced resources are not fully trusted. A renderer may process attacker-controlled content or fetch resources. WeasyPrint’s common use cases documentation and the wkhtmltopdf project status page both warn about untrusted content.

Troubleshoot common PDF conversion failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
PDF looks unlike the browser page Print CSS is active by default in the browser PDF APIs, or print rules deliberately hide or restyle content. Inspect @media print rules. If the intended result is screen-like, enable screen media emulation before PDF generation and compare again.
Images, fonts, or styles are missing Resources were not available to the renderer, URLs resolved differently, or conversion began before application assets were ready. Check resource URLs and access, set a base URL for relative assets where applicable, and wait for the page’s actual readiness conditions.
Colors or backgrounds differ Print rendering may adjust colors or omit backgrounds unless configured. Check PDF background options and the renderer’s documented print color controls, then inspect the exported file.
Content is clipped or breaks awkwardly Page dimensions, margins, long content, or print CSS rules do not fit the output. Review page size and margins, add deliberate print and page-break rules, and test long tables and URLs.
PDF is incomplete despite successful navigation Application data or resources may load after the navigation condition used by the script. Wait for a page-specific selector, application-ready signal, or other verified condition before generating the PDF; do not assume one network-idle setting fits every page.

Or skip the browser setup

If your task is to capture a website rather than build and operate your own rendering pipeline, ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its API also supports PDF output; the example below is the supplied one-call WebP screenshot request. See the API documentation for PDF request options and the other supported parameters.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
  • Before capture, it accepts cookie/consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off.
  • Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing. Responses identify the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
  • Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
  • The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Every feature is on every plan.
