There is no single best set of VS Code extensions for every developer. Choose extensions to meet an active need in your project: language support, formatting, linting, debugging, testing, or remote development. Then check the publisher, documentation, dependencies, changelog, permissions, and current Marketplace details before installing.

What VS Code extensions do—and how to choose them

Extensions add capabilities to Visual Studio Code, from language features and debuggers to workflow tools. The Extension Marketplace helps you discover and install them. Microsoft describes it as offering extensions across many programming languages and tasks; that breadth does not mean every extension is useful for every project.

Start with the work you need to do, not a popularity list. Language support, formatting, linting, debugging, testing, and remote development are distinct needs. A formatter changes code layout; a linter identifies potential issues or violations of configured rules. They can complement each other, but neither is a substitute for choosing tools that fit your stack and project conventions.

Choose extensions for your language and project tasks

Language support

Look for an extension that provides the editor support your language workflow needs, such as code completion, diagnostics, or debugging. For Python, Microsoft’s Python extension supports IntelliSense, linting, debugging, and testing. You must install a Python interpreter separately; the extension does not replace it. See Microsoft’s Python in Visual Studio Code documentation for setup guidance.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Formatting and linting

Formatting enforces a consistent presentation of code, while linting reports issues according to a linter’s checks and configuration. Decide which tools your project uses and avoid installing overlapping extensions without a specific reason. For a JavaScript or TypeScript project, Microsoft’s workspace recommendation example uses dbaeumer.vscode-eslint and esbenp.prettier-vscode. These are examples of project-specific recommendations, not universal choices for every stack.

For Python, VS Code’s documented linter options include Pylint, flake8, mypy, and community Ruff. Choose based on your project’s conventions and configuration; the available options do not imply that you need to install all of them. Microsoft’s Python linting documentation explains the supported choices.

Debugging and testing

Install debugging or testing support when it matches your language, runtime, and development process. Check the extension’s documentation for the features it contributes and any dependencies or setup requirements. Keep the editor extension distinct from the underlying runtime, test framework, or other tools your project requires.

Remote development

If you work in WSL, containers, or another remote environment, check where the extension needs to run. Some extensions run locally; others need to be installed in the remote environment. Microsoft documents workflows including containers, Dev Containers, remote development, and data science in its Extension Docs.

Check an extension before installing it

Marketplace install counts, ratings, and popularity filters can help with discovery, but they do not establish that an extension is secure, maintained, or appropriate for your project. Marketplace details can change, so review the current listing rather than relying on an old ranking or an undated popularity claim.

  • Publisher: Confirm who publishes the extension and whether that publisher is the one you intended to install.
  • Description and README: Check what the extension does, how to configure it, and whether its behavior fits your needs.
  • Feature contributions: Review the editor features it adds before accepting a broad or unclear feature set.
  • Dependencies: Check what other extensions or components it relies on.
  • Changelog: Look for signs that the extension is maintained and whether recent changes affect your workflow.
  • Permissions and trust: Extensions have the same permissions as VS Code itself. Microsoft says that beginning with VS Code 1.97, users receive a confirmation prompt for third-party publishers. Treat the prompt as a reason to verify the publisher and extension, not as a substitute for doing so.
  • Current compatibility: Check the Marketplace listing for current compatibility information and details relevant to your VS Code setup.

Microsoft’s Marketplace guide describes extension details and installation, including publisher information, README, features, changelog, dependencies, install counts, and ratings. Its Extension Marketplace documentation also explains the security prompt and extension recommendations.

Use profiles and workspace recommendations to separate setups

Profiles for different technology stacks

Profiles can help you switch between extension and settings setups for different kinds of work. A profile for one stack need not carry every extension you use for another. Microsoft’s extension documentation explains profiles and how to manage them.

Workspace recommendations for a team

A workspace recommendation lets a project suggest extensions relevant to that repository. This helps teammates discover the formatter or language tooling the project expects without treating the recommendation as a requirement to install unrelated tools. Microsoft’s example recommends dbaeumer.vscode-eslint and esbenp.prettier-vscode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remote windows and synchronization

Extension synchronization does not cover remote SSH, container, or WSL windows. When an extension appears to be missing in a remote session, check whether it must be installed in that environment instead of assuming your synchronized local setup will provide it. Microsoft documents this behavior in its Extension Marketplace guide.

A practical installation routine

  1. Name the task: Identify whether you need language support, formatting, linting, debugging, testing, or remote workflow support.
  2. Search the Marketplace: Open the Extensions view in VS Code or use the Visual Studio Marketplace. Compare listings by the task they perform, not just their position or rating.
  3. Inspect the listing: Read the publisher, description, README, feature contributions, dependencies, and changelog. Check current compatibility details.
  4. Install only what fits: Install the extension and any separately required runtime or project dependency. For remote work, verify whether it belongs in the local or remote environment.
  5. Test against the project: Confirm that the extension behaves as expected with the repository’s settings and conventions. Remove or disable it if it duplicates another tool or does not solve the identified need.
  6. Share project-specific choices: Where useful, add workspace recommendations so collaborators can discover the project’s intended tooling.

ScreenshotNeo for website screenshot workflows

For developers whose work includes capturing website screenshots, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server—not a VS Code extension. It can fit a workflow that needs screenshots or PDFs from a URL, while the extensions above address editor and project tasks.

Or skip the browser setup

Make one GET request to capture a page. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the available parameters.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

No. For example, Microsoft’s Python extension provides editor features, but you must install a Python interpreter separately.

Should I install every extension recommended by a workspace?
