Proton VPN and Obscura VPN are two iPhone app candidates, but their App Store listings are not proof of privacy or performance. Before choosing a service, understand what an iPhone VPN can route, what it may leave out, and what evidence to check.
What an iPhone VPN does—and what it may not do
A VPN can route certain network traffic through a provider’s service and may hide your IP address from websites and services. It does not necessarily carry every connection from your iPhone: Apple says essential system traffic and some app traffic may be excluded. The exact coverage depends on the VPN configuration and how apps and services connect. Apple’s VPNs & Privacy guidance explains these limits.
Apple’s central caution is: “When a VPN configuration is installed and active, your VPN provider may be able to see, intercept and modify your online activity.” A VPN therefore shifts trust from the network you are using to the VPN provider; it does not make the provider irrelevant to your privacy.
Apple also documents VPN technologies and organizational features such as per-app VPN and Always On VPN. Always On VPN is described for managed, supervised devices, not as a universal setting available to every consumer app. See Apple Platform Security for its platform documentation.

How iCloud Private Relay differs
iCloud Private Relay is not a general full-device VPN. Apple describes it as an iCloud+ privacy service covering Safari web browsing, DNS resolution, and insecure HTTP app traffic. Apple says its two-relay design separates the information each relay can see; that is Apple’s description of its own service. Details are in Apple’s Private Relay overview.
If an active VPN configuration is installed while iCloud Private Relay is enabled, Apple says the VPN configuration determines routing for internet connections that otherwise would be protected by Private Relay. Do not assume the two services stack to double-protect all traffic. Apple’s VPN guidance addresses their interaction.

iPhone VPN apps surfaced as candidates
The available information identifies two iPhone app candidates, but does not provide the independent testing, current privacy-policy review, and audit evidence needed to endorse either as best.
Proton VPN
The US App Store listing describes a Proton VPN iPhone app. It advertises a free tier with unlimited data and no speed restrictions, along with features including DNS leak protection and an always-on VPN or kill switch. These are claims in the listing, not independently verified findings here. Check the current listing and provider materials before relying on any feature or plan term: Proton VPN on the US App Store.

- Malwarebytes Premium: Available for Windows, Mac, iOS, Android and Chromebook. 24/7 real-time protection against emerging threats
- Malwarebytes Browser Guard: Available for Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. Removes annoying ads that follow you around. Blocks third-party ad trackers that collect your data. Helps protect against tech support and online scams. Blocks malicious web pages, stops in-browser cryptojackers.
- Malwarebytes Privacy: Available for Windows, Mac, iOS, Android. Next-gen, no-log VPN to protect your online digital footprint. Secure public Wi-Fi connections. One-click, intuitive UI to manage your online privacy. 500+ servers in 40+ countries.
Obscura VPN
The US App Store listing describes Obscura as an iPhone-only VPN and states that iOS 18.0 or later is required. It claims a two-party design and says Mullvad runs the exit servers; those details are attributed to the listing and are not independently confirmed here. Treat its privacy and performance statements as provider claims: Obscura VPN on the US App Store.

- THREAT DETECTION – Stay one step ahead. Suspicious links, risky sites, viruses, and scams, caught automatically before they reach you.
- PERSONAL INFO PROTECTION – Keep your personal info safer. Identity monitoring watches for your exposed info and tells you what to do about it.
- SECURE CONNECTIONS – Just a few easy clicks, and we'll automatically protect your info on public Wi‑Fi, every time you connect.
- GUIDED ACTION – Know what matters and what to do next. Clear alerts and simple guidance make it easy to take action.
- MORE THAN ANTIVIRUS – Scam protection, identity monitoring, VPN, web protection, and antivirus work together to protect you, all in one place.
- Privacy policy: What account information is collected? Does the provider log activity or connection data, how long is it retained, and how does the provider describe its response to legal requests?
- Independent audits: Check the audit date, scope, and findings. The existence of an audit does not establish that every privacy claim or app behavior has been tested.
- iOS behavior: Look for documented reconnection after network changes, DNS handling, kill-switch or always-on behavior, and any app-specific restrictions. Confirm what the app actually supports on your iOS version.
- Performance and reliability: Prefer independent tests that state when, where, on what device and network, and by what method they tested speed, reliability, or streaming. A provider’s own performance claim is not a substitute.
- Plan terms: Check current free-tier limits, renewal terms, supported device count, and whether the plan suits your needs. Terms can change, so verify them in the provider’s current listing and subscription details.
- Your other services: Check whether the VPN’s behavior fits your use of iCloud Private Relay and the apps or sites you rely on.
The candidate listings do not provide a comparable basis for scoring these factors, and no independent speed or reliability results are established here. A ranked winner would require comparable, current evidence rather than inference from marketing descriptions.
Who might need an iPhone VPN?
A VPN may be useful if you want certain traffic routed through a VPN provider or want websites and services to see a VPN address instead of your direct IP address. It is not a guarantee that every iPhone connection is covered, nor does it remove the need to trust the provider. If your main interest is Safari privacy and related traffic covered by Private Relay, compare that service’s stated scope with the VPN’s actual routing behavior before enabling both.
