Recommended Free Tools
There is no single best Android VPN for everyone. For a privacy-first choice, RTINGS names Mullvad its best tested Android VPN; Proton VPN is worth considering for its advertised Android privacy features and free-plan option; and PIA offers documented per-app and protocol controls. These recommendations reflect different sources and priorities, not a shared head-to-head test. This guide draws on provider documentation and editorial comparisons available on October 4, 2026; features, plans, prices, and streaming access can change.
Which Android VPN should you choose?
Start with what you need the VPN to do. A privacy-focused account model, Android-specific controls, simple setup, and access to streaming services are different priorities, and no single source evaluated every provider on the same basis.
| Reader priority | Provider to consider | What the cited source says |
|---|---|---|
| Privacy-first use | Mullvad | RTINGS names Mullvad its best tested Android VPN, citing its privacy-focused approach, option to create an account without an email address, and WireGuard-only support. RTINGS also cautions that streaming services may block its IP addresses. See RTINGS’ Android VPN comparison. |
| Android privacy features and a free-plan option | Proton VPN | Proton’s Android page advertises an open-source, audited app, a kill switch, split tunneling, alternative routing, and a free subscription option. It identifies some features as paid-plan features; check the current plan matrix and availability in your region. See Proton VPN’s Android feature details. |
| Per-app configuration and protocol choice | Private Internet Access (PIA) | PIA documents WireGuard and OpenVPN selection, Android Always-on and block-without-VPN settings, per-app configuration, and DNS-based filtering for ads, trackers, and malicious domains. These are provider-documented features. Read PIA’s Android setup instructions. |
| Accessible app with a broad feature set | Surfshark | TechRadar’s 2026 comparison describes Surfshark’s Android app as accessible and feature-rich and reports its own speed and leak-test results. Those results belong to TechRadar’s tests; they are not a speed guarantee for your connection. See TechRadar’s Android VPN comparison. |
Recommendations differ by publication and methodology. Tom’s Guide names NordVPN its overall pick, while also pointing readers toward Surfshark or PIA for lower-cost needs and Proton for privacy priorities. Treat that as Tom’s Guide’s recommendation rather than a universal ranking. See Tom’s Guide’s Android VPN picks.
Compare the provider’s current checkout terms, renewal price, device limit, and plan features before subscribing. Prices shown in reviews can depend on location, currency, subscription term, and promotions, so a review-page price may not match the offer available to you.

What matters when choosing an Android VPN?
Privacy evidence and audit scope
Look for clear information about the provider’s privacy practices and what, specifically, has been audited. An “audited” or “open source” label is a provider claim unless you examine the scope and report behind it. Proton describes its Android app as open source and audited; its product page is not, by itself, independent verification of every feature or privacy claim.
Android app controls
Check whether the app offers a kill switch or split tunneling if you need those controls. A kill switch is intended to limit traffic escaping outside the VPN if the connection fails, while split tunneling lets you choose which apps use the VPN. Android also has system-level VPN settings, but their availability and menu names depend on Android version, device maker, and VPN app support.

Protocol choices
Some providers expose more than one VPN protocol in their Android app. PIA documents WireGuard and OpenVPN selection; RTINGS notes Mullvad’s Android support is WireGuard-only. Whether a protocol choice matters depends on your needs and the provider’s implementation, so do not assume one label alone establishes better privacy or performance.
Streaming and location
A VPN’s ability to reach a streaming service varies by service, region, and time. Services may identify and block IP addresses associated with VPNs. RTINGS specifically cautions that popular streaming platforms may challenge or block Mullvad IPs, so do not choose a provider on the assumption that a particular catalog will always be available.

How do you turn on Always-on VPN and block traffic outside it?
Android supports Always-on VPN from Android 7.0 (API level 24). The system can start a VPN service when the device boots and keep it running while the device is on. You can also enable a setting commonly called “Block connections without VPN” to stop network traffic that does not use the VPN. The exact menu path varies by manufacturer and Android version.
- Install and configure your chosen VPN app, then connect at least once so Android registers its VPN service.
- Open Android’s Settings and find the VPN controls. Depending on the device, this may be under Network & internet or a manufacturer-specific connections menu.
- Tap the gear or settings icon beside the VPN entry. PIA’s support instructions use this approach and note that Android menu names vary, including on Samsung devices.
- Turn on Always-on VPN. If available and appropriate for your setup, also enable Block connections without VPN.
- Reconnect the VPN and confirm that apps you need can reach the network. If the VPN is disconnected, or an app is excluded from VPN routing, the block setting can leave that app without connectivity.
Android’s VPN documentation describes Always-on support and the block-without-VPN control. These safeguards depend on your Android version, device menus, and app support; check the settings on your own device rather than assuming every Android phone presents the same options.

How does per-app VPN routing work on Android?
Android VPN apps can route traffic using either an allowed-app list or a disallowed-app list, but not both at once. With neither list configured, all network traffic goes through the VPN. An allowed list sends only selected apps through it; a disallowed list excludes selected apps. The app’s own labels and setup flow may differ from Android’s system wording.
If you enable “Block connections without VPN,” pay close attention to excluded apps: traffic that does not use the VPN may be blocked rather than sent over the regular connection. PIA documents per-app settings in its Android configuration guide; consult your VPN app’s instructions before changing routing.

What Android VPN research does—and does not—show
A 2026 MVPNalyzer presentation from Censored Planet Lab reports tests of apps on Android 14. In that tested sample, the slides report that 61 apps exchanged cleartext traffic, 29 leaked virtually all websites visited, and 24 leaked DNS queries. These are study-sample findings, not an assessment of every VPN app, a current measurement of the whole market, or evidence about any specific provider in this comparison. Read the NDSS 2026 MVPNalyzer slides.
A VPN does not make you fully anonymous and cannot fix an unpatched Android operating system. Keep Android and your apps updated, and remember that a VPN changes how network traffic is routed; it does not remove other security risks from an unsupported device. Security.org discusses Android-version differences and the risks of older, unsupported software in its Android VPN guide.
