The right small-business VPN router depends on what you need the VPN to do: connect offices, give employees remote access, or route network traffic through a VPN. TP-Link’s Omada ER605 V2 is a compact gigabit option, the ER7206 V2.30 adds more WAN flexibility and mounting choices, and the Omada Pro G611 is a higher-capacity 10G gateway. These are manufacturer-documented options, not independently tested winners; choose by required protocols, VPN performance, WAN connections, and management needs.

First decide what job the VPN router must do

“VPN router” can refer to different network functions, and not every model’s protocol list proves support for every desired setup. TP-Link describes its Omada gateways as creating “secure, encrypted connections for remote workers and businesses with multiple locations” on its Omada Business VPN Gateways page.

  • Site-to-site VPN: Connects networks at separate offices so they can reach shared business resources. Check that the router supports the required tunnel type and that the equipment at both ends can interoperate.
  • Remote-access VPN: Lets employees connect from outside the office. Confirm which protocols and client devices are supported, and how users and access permissions are managed.
  • VPN-routed traffic: Sends some or all network traffic through a VPN connection. Verify that the router supports the intended routing policy; a general VPN protocol listing alone does not establish how traffic can be directed.

These functions can overlap, but they are not interchangeable. Define the required topology and user devices before comparing port counts or throughput.

Three Omada options at different capacity tiers

The manufacturer specifications show three distinct wired gateway tiers. They do not establish a cross-vendor ranking or predict performance in a particular office.

Which model fits which small-business setup?

Choose the ER605 V2 for a basic gigabit gateway

The ER605 V2 is the compact wired tier here: five gigabit ports, up to three WAN Ethernet connections, and USB support for a 4G/3G modem that can provide backup connectivity. Its listed tunnel capacities may suit a modest deployment, but they are maximum tunnel counts—not a promise of throughput for a given number of simultaneous users. Confirm that the current hardware and firmware support the exact VPN protocol and client setup your business needs.

  • 【5 Years Warranty】Backed by our 5-years warranty and free technical support from 6am to 6pm PST Monday to Fridays

Consider the ER7206 V2.30 when WAN flexibility matters

The ER7206 V2.30 is the most flexible gigabit example in this group if you need multiple WAN connections, LTE dongle support, cloud management, or desktop, wall, and rack mounting. Its listed protocol selection includes WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IPsec. That makes it a candidate for evaluating several VPN designs, not proof that it will deliver a particular encrypted speed or interoperate with every client.

Look at the G611 for higher-capacity and 10G requirements

The Omada Pro G611 is a different class of gateway, with two 10GE SFP+ ports and support for up to ten WAN ports. Its reported VPN performance figures may be relevant when planning a higher-capacity network, but they apply to the vendor-stated configurations, not necessarily to your selected encryption, packet sizes, concurrent tunnels, firmware, or internet service. Choose it only if those connectivity and capacity requirements justify a rack-mounted platform.

For devices that are compatible with SDN firmware, please visit TP-Link website.

How to compare VPN performance and compatibility

A gigabit port describes a physical interface; it does not tell you how quickly the router can encrypt and forward traffic. General NAT throughput is not the same as VPN throughput. Match the published or independently measured VPN result to the protocol, encryption configuration, and traffic pattern your business will actually use.

  • Compare like with like: For each candidate, look for throughput by protocol and configuration, not a single headline speed. The G611 figures above specify IPsec with ESP-SHA1-AES256 and an OpenVPN result, but TP-Link’s product page does not make them independent cross-vendor tests.
  • Check client and peer compatibility: Verify support at both ends of a site-to-site tunnel and on the operating systems or devices remote employees use. A protocol appearing in a gateway specification does not establish support for every client or configuration.
  • Size for real demand: Account for internet-plan speed, concurrent users, simultaneous tunnels, and the work being carried over the VPN. File transfers, voice, and interactive applications can be affected differently by throughput and latency.
  • Ask for reproducible tests: A useful independent comparison names the protocol, encryption settings, firmware, WAN conditions, traffic mix, and latency alongside throughput. No independent cross-vendor test is established for these three models here.

Multi-WAN, backup, and management are separate buying decisions

More WAN ports can support multiple internet connections, but port count alone does not guarantee automatic failover, seamless recovery, or a particular balancing policy. The ER7206 page specifies load balancing across up to five WAN ports; the ER605 page describes USB mobile-broadband backup, and the ER7206 page lists LTE dongle support. Check the exact failover behavior, compatible modem or dongle, and configuration process before relying on either for continuity.

Management also affects day-to-day operation. TP-Link lists cloud management for the ER7206 V2.30. If centralized oversight is important, verify what is managed centrally, which service or controller is required, and whether the management model fits your security and staffing policies. Do not assume that another model has the same management features.

Selection checklist before you buy

  1. Map the VPN use: Write down whether you need office-to-office tunnels, employee remote access, VPN-routed traffic, or a combination.
  2. List endpoints and protocols: Identify the peer gateway and every employee device or client that must connect; confirm supported protocols and configuration compatibility.
  3. Set capacity targets: Record the internet speed, number of concurrent users and tunnels, and the applications that need reliable performance. Compare VPN-specific figures under comparable configurations.
  4. Plan WAN connectivity: Count internet connections, decide whether you need balancing or backup, and check supported SFP modules, LTE devices, or mobile-broadband modems as applicable.
  5. Check physical and operational fit: Confirm port needs, mounting options, rack space, power, cooling, noise expectations, and how the gateway will be administered.
  6. Verify the exact product: Before ordering, check hardware revision, current firmware and security support, local availability, and current specifications. Prices and stock depend on market and retailer and are not established here.
