For ordinary Signal use, you do not need a VPN. Signal works over Wi-Fi or mobile data. If a country blocks Signal, Signal’s own support points users to its TLS proxy, with setup steps for Android and iOS. A VPN can change your connection route, but the available general VPN rankings do not show that any named service reliably connects Signal on a particular country’s network.
Do you need a VPN to use Signal?
No. Signal says Signal-to-Signal communication works over an internet connection, including Wi-Fi and mobile data. A VPN is not a prerequisite for Signal’s privacy protections, and buying one is not a requirement for ordinary messaging. Signal’s installation guidance describes the connection requirement.
A VPN may change the route your device takes to the internet, which can be useful for some network restrictions or privacy goals. But that does not establish that it will get Signal working on a particular network. The right choice depends first on whether your issue is routine privacy, a local connection problem, or a country-level block.
If Signal is blocked, start with Signal’s proxy
Signal’s current support guidance recommends using a proxy to get started and continue using Signal when it is blocked in a country. It documents setup on Android and iOS; the phone setup method is not currently available on Signal Desktop. See Signal’s proxy support instructions for the current steps.

Signal advises sharing proxy addresses privately where possible, since publicly announcing an address can make it easier for censors to block. You can ask trusted contacts for an address or configure a proxy on a server with ports 80 and 443 available and a domain or subdomain pointed to it. If a proxy is blocked, Signal shows it as disconnected and messages stop sending or receiving; switch to an address that is not blocked.
What the proxy operator can see
Signal’s technical explanation says the client establishes a tunnel through the proxy and still negotiates its standard TLS connection to Signal endpoints. The proxy forwards bytes to Signal and blocks non-Signal traffic. Signal says this design keeps the tunneled traffic opaque to the proxy operator; that is a description of Signal’s proxy, not a claim about every VPN. Signal’s technical post on TLS proxies explains the design, while the current support page covers availability and setup.

When a VPN might help—and when it might be the problem
A general-purpose VPN may help if changing your device’s route avoids a network restriction, but the sources available here do not establish reliable Signal access through a VPN in any named country. A general VPN recommendation or a provider’s privacy claim is not proof that Signal will connect under censorship.
A VPN can also interfere with Signal. Signal’s troubleshooting guidance says a third-party app, VPN, or firewall that limits Signal’s internet access may need to be disabled or adjusted. Treat it as one possible cause, not evidence that Signal is incompatible with VPNs. Signal’s troubleshooting guidance gives steps for restricted connections.

- Ultra-fast WiFi Speed – RT-AX1800S supports 1024-QAM for dramatically faster wireless connections
- Increase Capacity and Efficiency – Supporting not only MU-MIMO but also OFDMA technique to efficiently allocate channels, communicate with multiple devices simultaneously
- 5 Gigabit ports – One Gigabit WAN port and four Gigabit LAN ports, 10X faster than 100–Base T Ethernet.
- Commercial-grade Security Anywhere – Protect your home network with AiProtection Classic, powered by Trend Micro. And when away from home, ASUS Instant Guard gives you a one-click secure VPN.
On a restrictive network, Signal lists requirements including TCP port 443 and UDP, and notes that calling requirements vary and can change. Those details can help diagnose a firewall or network rule; they do not mean a consumer VPN will fix the problem. Check Signal’s network troubleshooting information if you need to investigate connectivity.

TechRadar’s September 24, 2026 review names NordVPN its best general VPN and says Proton VPN may be a better choice in countries with high levels of censorship. That assessment does not establish country-specific Signal connectivity. Read TechRadar’s general VPN review.
Use such rankings as a shortlist for comparing general VPN features, not as a Signal compatibility guarantee. Before subscribing, check the provider’s current platform support, privacy evidence, plan price, and renewal terms directly; offers and terms can change. A generic “no logs” statement, an editorial ranking, or a discount does not prove that a VPN will work with Signal on a network that blocks it.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Choose based on the problem you need to solve
| Goal or situation | Best next step | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Signal works and you want ordinary messaging | Use Signal over Wi-Fi or mobile data; a VPN is optional. | Signal says Signal-to-Signal communication uses an internet connection. |
| Signal is blocked in your country and you use Android or iOS | Follow Signal’s TLS proxy setup instructions. | Signal documents proxy setup for both phone platforms. |
| You use Signal Desktop and need the blocked-country phone proxy method | Do not assume the phone instructions apply to Desktop. | Signal says that method is not currently available on Desktop. |
| Signal stopped connecting after enabling a VPN, firewall, or third-party app | Check whether that software or its settings are restricting Signal. | Signal identifies restricted access from these tools as a possible connection issue. |
| You want a VPN recommendation specifically for censored Signal access | Do not treat general rankings as proof; no named-country test is established here. | Current cited reviews compare general VPN services, not verified Signal access on a named country’s network. |
Troubleshoot a connection before buying another service
- Confirm the scope: check whether Signal fails on one network or on both Wi-Fi and mobile data. This helps distinguish a local network restriction from a broader device or app issue.
- If the issue began after enabling a VPN or other network tool: temporarily disable it or adjust its settings, then try Signal again. Signal specifically recommends modifying or disabling a third-party app, VPN, or firewall that limits its internet connection.
- If Signal is blocked in your country: use Signal’s proxy support page and follow the steps for your phone platform. Obtain proxy addresses privately where possible.
- If the proxy disconnects: the address may have been blocked. Signal’s stated remedy is to change to a proxy address that is not blocked.
- If a network firewall is involved: consult Signal’s network requirements and the network administrator, where appropriate. Signal lists TCP port 443 and UDP requirements, and says calling requirements vary.
