Compare services by their documented anti-censorship options, nearby server coverage, device support, and the scope of their privacy assurances—and treat provider feature descriptions as claims, not proof that a connection will work locally.
A VPN can protect traffic and route it through a provider’s server when you have an internet connection. It cannot restore internet access during a shutdown. That distinction matters in Equatorial Guinea, where restrictions and disruptions have been reported.
What a VPN can—and cannot—do in Equatorial Guinea
Freedom House’s 2025 country report classifies Equatorial Guinea as “Not Free” and reports that authorities restricted internet and mobile communications on Annobón following arrests connected to protests in 2024. The report is a country assessment, not a current connectivity check or a VPN test. Freedom House: Equatorial Guinea, Freedom in the World 2025
The U.S. State Department’s 2023 human-rights report, published in 2024, says the government restricted and disrupted internet access and censored online content. It also reports that independent outlet AhoraEG was accessible only through a VPN. That is a dated observation, not confirmation of the outlet’s availability today. In September 2025, the Associated Press reported that Annobón residents had experienced an internet outage for about a year after protesting construction activity. The article described effects on banking and emergency hospital services and said the exact shutdown mechanism was unclear. A VPN needs a working connection in order to connect; it cannot bring back service if the underlying internet is unavailable. Alternative connectivity is not a guaranteed workaround either. Access Now’s report, published in 2026 about shutdowns during 2025, says low-Earth-orbit satellite internet was shut down 14 times across seven countries, including Equatorial Guinea. This does not establish whether satellite service is available to an individual reader. Access Now: Rising Repression Meets Global Resistance: Internet Shutdowns in 2025

How to compare VPNs for this use
No local speed, reliability, or unblock tests were established for the providers below. Use the comparison as a shortlist of features to investigate, not a ranking of proven local performance. Before subscribing, check the current server list, supported devices, plan and refund terms, and availability from your location.
| Provider | Documented feature or assurance | What it does—and does not—establish |
|---|---|---|
| Proton VPN | Its censorship page describes Stealth, Smart Protocol, and alternative routing. Proton VPN: censorship features | The provider says Smart Protocol can switch protocols when some are blocked, and alternative routing can help reach its service when access is blocked. These descriptions do not establish a success rate on Equatorial Guinea networks. Its regional page returned for “Guinea” concerns Guinea, not Equatorial Guinea, and is not evidence of local servers, performance, or legality. Proton VPN: Guinea regional page |
| ExpressVPN | Its Rights Center describes a protocol designed to support obfuscation and says its servers run on RAM. ExpressVPN: Rights Center | These are company statements, not independent evidence of local availability or speed. |
| NordVPN | Its no-logs page describes external reviews, including reviews by Deloitte. NordVPN: A leading no-log VPN for online privacy in 2026 | The page description alone does not establish a particular report’s date, scope, or public availability. Check those details before treating an audit as evidence for a specific privacy claim. |
| Surfshark | Its security page says Deloitte provided assurance reports in 2023 and 2025 on its no-logs practices, and describes its servers as RAM-only. Surfshark: VPN Security—how safe is it? | These are provider-reported claims. The scope of each report matters; a report about a particular control or period should not be read as a blanket guarantee of privacy. |
Anti-censorship options
If you are concerned that a VPN connection or provider website may be blocked, look for documented alternate protocols, obfuscation, or fallback routing. These features may help with some types of blocking, but they do not overcome every network restriction and have not been independently demonstrated here on Equatorial Guinea connections.

Server location and device support
Check the provider’s live server list rather than assuming it operates a server in Equatorial Guinea. A nearby server may be worth considering for latency, while another location may better suit the service you need; actual performance depends on the route and network conditions. Confirm that the provider has apps or setup instructions for your phone, computer, or router before paying.
Privacy evidence
Read the privacy policy and distinguish a provider’s own statements from independent assurance. For an audit or assurance report, check who conducted it, when, what systems or practices it covered, and whether the report is publicly accessible. An audit with a limited scope is not proof that every product, server, or future practice meets the same standard.

Price, refunds, and availability
Current plan prices, discounts, local payment support, refund terms, and provider availability in Equatorial Guinea were not established in the cited sources. Choosing a service without a local performance ranking
- Define the job. Decide whether you need to protect traffic on public Wi-Fi, reach a provider’s service where access is blocked, or connect to a particular region. A VPN is not a substitute for a working internet connection.
- Check the current server list and device support. Confirm the locations and apps you actually need on the provider’s own site; do not assume a country-specific server exists.
- Inspect blocking workarounds. Compare documented fallback protocols, obfuscation, and alternative routing, while treating them as potential aids rather than guarantees on local networks.
- Read the privacy evidence. Review the policy and, where a provider cites an audit, identify its date, scope, auditor, and public report.
- Confirm commercial terms and local access. Check the current price, payment methods, refund conditions, and whether signup and support are available to you.
Freedom House’s 2025 Freedom in the World score for Equatorial Guinea is 5/100; it is a broad assessment of political rights and civil liberties, not a measure of internet speed or VPN quality. Its Freedom on the Net overview says the latest edition covered 72 countries; that scope does not establish a dedicated Equatorial Guinea assessment in that edition.
