Vitamin B2, or riboflavin, is essential for normal energy metabolism, but that role does not show that taking extra will make you feel more energetic. Most people in the United States get enough from food, and deficiency is very rare. If you are considering a supplement, choose based on your actual intake and intended use—not an energy claim.
What vitamin B2 does—and what it does not prove
Riboflavin helps the body make the coenzymes FMN and FAD, which support normal cellular function and the metabolism of food for energy. This is a necessary nutrient function, not evidence that extra B2 improves energy in someone whose intake is already adequate. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) does not establish a general energy benefit from supplementation in that situation. NIH ODS: Riboflavin, Health Professional Fact Sheet
That distinction matters when comparing products: a supplement can supply riboflavin, but its presence on a label does not substantiate claims that it will improve energy or provide broad health benefits.
How much riboflavin do you need?
The recommended intake is an amount from food and supplements combined, not a dose everyone should take as a pill. The NIH ODS lists these daily reference intakes:
#1 Best Overall
- 400mg of Premium Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) Per Capsule
- 120 Capsules of Vitamin B2 Per Bottle
- 120 Servings Per Bottle, 1 Capsule is 1 Serving
- GMO-Free, Gluten Free, 3rd Party Tested
- Made In a NSF Certified, GMP Compliant, FDA Registered Facility
| Life stage | Recommended intake |
|---|---|
| Infants, 0–6 months | 0.3 mg/day (adequate intake) |
| Infants, 7–12 months | 0.4 mg/day (adequate intake) |
| Children, 1–3 years | 0.5 mg/day |
| Children, 4–8 years | 0.6 mg/day |
| Children, 9–13 years | 0.9 mg/day |
| Adolescents, 14–18 years | 1.3 mg/day for males; 1.0 mg/day for females |
| Adults, 19 years and older | 1.3 mg/day for men; 1.1 mg/day for women |
| Pregnancy | 1.4 mg/day |
| Lactation | 1.6 mg/day |
For adults, the NIH ODS lists the 1.3 mg/day recommendation for men and 1.1 mg/day for women both for ages 19–50 and age 51 and older. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or choosing a supplement for a child, use the appropriate life-stage guidance and ask a healthcare professional when uncertain. NIH ODS reference intakes
Can vitamin B2 help with energy?
Riboflavin is required for normal energy metabolism, but the available NIH sources do not show that supplemental B2 boosts energy in people who already get enough. If persistent fatigue is your concern, do not assume B2 is the cause or treat it with a high-dose supplement; fatigue can have many causes and merits appropriate medical advice.

Can riboflavin help prevent migraines?
Possibly for some people, but the evidence is limited and inconsistent. ODS describes a randomized trial in 55 adults in which 400 mg/day was associated with two fewer migraine attacks per month than placebo. A retrospective study of 41 children given 200 or 400 mg/day reported attacks falling from 21.7 ± 13.7 to 13.2 ± 11.8 over three months; that uncontrolled retrospective result should not be generalized to all children. Two small randomized pediatric trials using 50–200 mg/day did not find a reduction in headache number or severity compared with placebo. NIH ODS migraine evidence summary
ODS reports that the American Academy of Neurology and American Headache Society concluded riboflavin is probably effective for migraine prevention; the Canadian Headache Society recommends 400 mg/day while noting low-quality evidence. A 400 mg/day regimen is a clinical prevention dose, not the adult nutritional requirement. NIH ODS advises people considering riboflavin for migraines to discuss this large daily dose with a healthcare provider. NIH ODS · NIH ODS consumer fact sheet

Can food meet your B2 needs?
For most people, food is a practical way to get riboflavin. ODS identifies eggs, kidneys and liver, lean meats, and milk as rich sources; some vegetables and fortified cereals, breads, and grains also contribute. ODS says deficiency is very rare in the United States and most people get enough through food. NIH ODS: Riboflavin, Fact Sheet for Consumers
ODS identifies strict vegetarian athletes who avoid dairy and eggs as one group that may be at greater risk. Inadequate intake, endocrine abnormalities, and certain diseases can also contribute. Symptoms are not enough to diagnose deficiency because they may overlap with other nutrient deficiencies and health conditions; seek medical evaluation rather than self-diagnosing.

How to choose a B2 supplement
Standalone riboflavin, B-complex supplements, multivitamins, and some products containing riboflavin 5′-phosphate are available. Evidence cited by ODS does not establish a generally superior form. Multivitamin/mineral products commonly provide 1.3 mg, or 100% of the adult Daily Value; that label amount is not a reason by itself to add a supplement if your diet already meets your needs. NIH ODS supplement information
- Check the amount per serving. Compare the Supplement Facts panel with your dietary intake and the use you have discussed with a healthcare professional. Do not mistake a migraine-prevention regimen for an everyday nutritional dose.
- Decide whether you need a combination product. A B-complex or multivitamin includes other nutrients. Review those amounts too, rather than choosing by the B2 number alone.
- Read the form and serving size. Labels may list riboflavin or riboflavin 5′-phosphate. Neither form is established here as generally better; note how many tablets or capsules make up one serving.
- Assess quality claims accurately. The FDA does not approve dietary supplements for safety and effectiveness before they are marketed. Independent testing or certification can provide information about product contents or manufacturing quality, but it does not prove a product works for energy, prevents disease, or suits your needs. Check a certifier’s current records rather than relying on a seal image alone. FDA: Information for Consumers on Using Dietary Supplements · NSF: Dietary Supplements and Functional Foods FAQs
- Compare cost only after the label. Check current price per serving and serving burden on the retailer’s live listing; prices and formulas can change. No particular brand or current product ranking is established here.
Safety, high doses, and interactions
The Food and Nutrition Board has not set a tolerable upper intake level for riboflavin because adverse effects had not been reported in the available evidence. ODS describes limited high-intake safety evidence, including 400 mg/day for at least three months, but cautions that limited data do not prove high intakes have no adverse effects. The amount absorbed from a single dose is also limited above approximately 27 mg, according to ODS. These points are not a guarantee that high-dose use is harmless or that taking more is useful.
